Winter Meeting

Shopping List
Big ticket items:

  1. Miguel Cabrera - safe to say, he's an offensive force at a tender age. Appears the Marlins asking price is to high for everyone and to the relief of many Dodger fans, Ned is not going to meet that price.
  2. Johan Santana - since the word is that he's told the Twins he will only wave his no-trade for either the RedSox or Yankee's it also appears that we won't be a player for him even though we may be the best fit for what the Twins need.
  3. Eric Bedard - I can envision us getting Bedard without giving up either Kemp, Billingsley, or Kershaw. The Orioles have enough holes that we could help them in 1st, LF, 3rd, SS, Rotation, or relief. They have Mora's 17 Million contract they would like to dump. Sometimes that is what being big market is about. Take a bad contract so you can have your hands on the good stuff. That is how the RedSox got Becket. They just got lucky or were smart enough to know that Lowell was going to bounce back. Bedard is one hell of a pitcher and if we can retain Billingsley and Kershaw a rotation in 2009 of  Bedard, Billingsley, Penny, and Kershaw would be about as good as it will ever get
  4. Dan Haren - I've love to have Dan Haren but I don't think Billy Beane will trade him  without getting one of our big 3 back. He's got the great 3 year contract and he's a good pitcher. We just can't trade Billingsley or Kershaw for him. Do you make Kemp a centerpiece of the deal or can we get something done without the big 3? He might be worth more then Bedard since he's younger, has 3 years remaining on his contract, and is almost just as good.
  5. Andruw Jones - only worth it, if we flip an outfielder for something else, or are able to dump Juan's contract. Makes no sense just to sign Andruw to CF and move Juan Pierre to LF and Ethier to the bench.
  6. Mike Cameron - is going to mis 25 games. Still has plenty of defense and power. He'll be cheaper then the more reowned available center fielders, and he'll also probably be better.
  7. Joe Blanton -  We could match up well enough with the A's to make a multi-player deal. They have many holes or good players who won't be around the next time the A's are good if Beane does a tear down. We could do something where we make LaRoche the centerpiece of a deal and end up with Blanton and Chavez and they end up with alot of our group B prospects or players.
  8. Sign Kuroda - I'd rather sign Kuroda then send prospects to Billy Beane for Joe Blanton.
  9. Kyle Lohse - Just say no
  10. Carlos Silva - Just say no
  11. Aaron Rowand - Just say no, contracts like the ones that Pierre, Matthews, and now Hunter have gotten have made him ask for 5 years. Thank God he thinks he's good enough for a 5 year deal.

Small Ticket Items:

  1. Mike Lamb - would make a great guy to play 1st, 3rd, and pinch hit.
  2. Sign Lieber  - He'd be a nice plan B if we don't go anything else. He can fill the back end of the rotation as insurance while we wait for Kershaw, Elbert, and McDonald. He should be fairly cheap and not require more then a two year deal.
  3. Backup Catcher - Miller, Leiberthal, Barajas- anyone will do.
I will be quite content if we don't do anything but I have always liked the idea of Andruw Jones playing CF for the Dodgers. I'd also love to see us bring Richie Weeks to the Blue Crew.

Update 12/03
Under small ticket items the Dodgers have signed Robert Booth. Here is a scouting report from a friend at baseball HQ who follows the Japanese leagues and has a scouting report on anyone who might help a roto team.
Robert Booth: Pitcher. Japanese-American who plays for Asia University. Big (6’ 3") with a mid-90’s fastball. Born in Tokyo but has an American passport, meaning he won’t need any immigration documents. He’s only played one season of college ball but the Dodgers already have an eye on him. Comment: A real-long shot, but I liked the idea of sneaking in a pronounceable name for you.

From that list,
I'd like to see the Dodgers get,
  1. Andruw Jones
  2. Use extra outfielder (Kemp, Either, ... maybe Pierre?)(in my dreams) to get Bedard or Haren.
Santana would be nice, but Bedard/Haren wouldn't break the bank (in either prospects or money). For either of those two, we'd probably get to hang onto Kershaw, which for me is a must.

If 2) doesn't happen, then sign Kuroda. I'd be more than happy to see a rotation of Penny, Lowe, Bills, Kuroda and Schmidt/Loaiza next season. Schmidt could be great for us, and while Loaiza certainly isn't going to turn many heads, he's at least a serviceable #5.

Transaction?
I would only sign Jones to a $12M one year deal.  He is in decline and has to prove it is reversable before he can command multi years at a premium.  It does not matter what his $$$ agent says.  Ned is not on the best of terms with Jone's $$$ agent anyway.

Furcal would make the best CF for the Dodgers in 08 if they can get rid of JP to the Rangers or the WSox.

C Martin
1B Loney
2B Kent/Abreu/Tejada
SS Hu
3B LaRoche/Nomar
RF Kemp
CF Furcal (offer him a two year extension for CF)
LF Ethier

RE:
Can't disagree more. 1st why would you take a guy whose calling card is defense and move him to CF. You only do that with guys who can't handle the defense of SS. 2nd why would Furcal take an extension to play CF for us when he will easily be able to get a 4 or 5 year deal to continue to play SS for a team of his choice.

Furcal had an off year due to injury but you'd extend him. A Jones had an injury based off year but you don't want to take a chance on him until he proves that his age 30 year was injury based and not a trend. The dots don't connect for me. A one year aberration is not a trend for me.

Jones
I just read that the Dodgers offered Jones a 2-year, 36 million dollar contract.

Re
Me thinks he won't except the same amount as  Torii Hunter yearly but with three less years.

Re:
The market would have to be very dry for him to accept that but it is a good offer for a player with ? marks surrounding his future. 18 Million a year ain't nothing to sneeze at. Wonder if they both compromise at 3/54 or 2/38.

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 3, 2007 2:29 PM PST up reply actions

Compromise
Yea, I'd say the compromise 3/54 might get something done.  After all, the Braves didn't offer Jones arbitration, which means the market for him is so abysmal that they thought there was a chance he might accept it.

on Bedard
You left out the part about the Sox giving up Hanley Ramirez to get Beckett.

So it would be Bedard/Mora for Kemp then?  That seems to be a decent analogy to the Beckett deal.

by blue22 on Dec 3, 2007 2:41 PM PST reply actions

RE
Right, that was my point. Boston gave up top minor league talent for Beckett and agreed to take Lowell's contract. I don't think Kemp is a good comp. Neither Anibal Sanchez or Hanley had ever played a game above AA while Kemp already has one outstanding year in the majors.

I would hope that if we get Bedard we would not have to give up Kemp or Kershaw. Anibal Sanchez was just a nice pitching prospect not the top pitching prospect in baseball.

Doesn't anyone find it curious how Bedards K/Rate jumped from 3 seasons of 7.9 / 8.0 / 7.8 to 10.9 in 2007. How reasonable is it to expect that to stay high in combination with his better command?

re:
Quote from mlbrumor
UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 4:55pm: Sounds like the Mariners might make a run at Bedard now, but it'd cost 'em Adam Jones, Brandon Morrow, and Jeff Clement.  That bounty sounds about right.

If that price is considered right what would be the comparable Dodger offer?

Adam Jones = Andy LaRoche
Both highest rated hitters in organization, Jones is younger and plays the premium position of CF, but his average, OB, slug will probably not measure upto LaRoche

Brandon Morrow  = Elbert or McDonald or Meloan
Morrow was a high draft pick but is his upside any better then Elbert or McDonald? Maybe a little more

Jeff Clement = Hu
Clement is an offensive catcher who is a defensive liability. Hu is a defensive SS who can hit enough to be an asset.

Maybe we throw in a 4th player but I think it would be easy to match any offer the Mariners are throwing out there without giving up Kemp or Kershaw. The idea that he should bring back more then Santana I just don't understand. We are talking only 1 1/2 years of excellence and one extra year of service. Plus the Orioles won't be trading him to the Yankee's or RedSox. At least I doubt they would.

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 3, 2007 3:35 PM PST reply actions

Re
Morrow is hard to judge. He spent almost no time at all in the minors, yet he showed he had the stuff to blow big leaguers away (66 K in 63 innings this year). He has no control at all, but that could very much be a function of him getting no seasoning.

I don't think we have a good comparable to Clement. He might actually be pretty close to LaRoche offensively because of the hugely disseperate environments they played in. I don't know enough about his defense and what he'll be converted to to say how close he actually is to LaRoche. I'd definately say he's worth more than Hu.

That there's no truth to the Jones' offer, although the Dodgers are interested in Jones.

Jones
It's being reported that the Dodgers just signed Andruw Jones to a 2 year, 36 million dollar contract.
