Game Thread 6: San Diego Padres
Los Angeles @ San Diego
Matt Kemp sits for the second day in a row as the Dodgers take on Chris Young and the Padres. This is starting to get a bit annoying.

Camo
jersey again for the Padres. I usually hate alternate jerseys but that one the Padres wear is the only one I tolerate because of why they wear it. as Jones strikes out again.

I Would Have to Say That Might Be The Ugliest Uniform Used in Baseball.
Now that teams have phased out all their unis from the 80's and early 90's. Some of those unis were just awful.

This Is Absurd.
I'd respect Torre more if he had just said that Juan Pierre would be starting because at least he wouldn't be lying.

No
interference call? The guy was pretty much running on the infield grass on the way to first

just
a grounder in front of Martin that he threw to first only to have it hit the runner.

I can see Torre
thinking that Pierre might run wild on Young, but then Pierre would have to get on base for that to happen.
If Pierre does nothing today, I expect he'll sit for a while.
DeWitt has had a very solid 1st week. We would have been thrilled if LaRoche had done as well in the 1st week.

You Might Be Right on That Point.
He could've been thinking too that Kemp's power would be annulled by the dimensions of the park. But in Kemp's defense, it's not like he is not a stolen base threat, either.

I'm Listening to the Game on the Radio
It sounds like Ethier crushed that ball.

This might be the hardest Brian Giles has hit the ball in a homestand in years.

I
was going to write about the stark contrast of a Jones at bat compared to an Ethier at bat but inning over.

Andruw Jones is going to swing for the fences, and he doesn't care what anyone says.

Ironically, that's a small sample size based observation. I do remember people saying Torre values a player based on his first 15 at bats when he was with the Yankees though, so there might be something to it.

If I Had Known Torre Wasn't Going To Start Kemp,
I could have started Ellsbury and tied my opponent for homers. Now I'm going to lose that category. I hate you, Torre.

Just do a good job? Because Steiner liked the hit and run? And then he says DeWitt does all the "little things."

DeWitt and the hit and run
While DeWitt did tap to the pitcher, he did avoid getting under the ball, which is the second-most futile result on that play, swinging and missing being the worst. (Missing the sign not included.)
He's also a kid facing Trevor Hoffman - Torre may have figured that a first-pitch strike was DeWitt's best opportunity. Plus Torre reduces DeWitt's mental approach there to see-ball, hit-ball.
