If it’s only for one game, why not put LaRoche at SS? Get his bat in there, since Torre is so intent on starting DeWitt every game at 3B.

Maybe some horrible misconception about defense?
I have no idea how LaRoche stacks up against Maza or Berroa. Managers are known to get dumb preconceptions in their heads though.
