Game Thread 7/25: Washington Nationals
Washington Nationals at Los Angeles Dodgers, Jul 25, 2008 7:40 PM PDT
A fun game to occupy yourself with while I'm at Happy Hour. How many players on the Nationals can you find that you had no idea were still in baseball. I got 10.

Here’s everyone on the Expos I didn’t know were still in the majors:
Luis Ayala (who I just always forget about even though he’s never left the Expos)
Jesus Colome
Until last night, Joel Hanrahan
Pete Orr
Willie Harris
Ryan Langerhans
And here’s everyone I’ve never heard of:
Collin Balestar
John Lannan
Charlie Manning
Garrett Mock
Saul Rivera
Steven Shell
Same as mine minus Willie Harris and Lannan.

I know the Nats got Lo Duca because they didn’t think Flores would be ready this year, but why did they get both Lo Duca and Estrada (who they just DFA’d).
by Tango and Cash on Jul 25, 2008 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions
No idea. The rumor I heard was that in the Milledge trade the Mets offered to give them Estrada and pay his salary and the Nats said “nah, we’ll just take Milledge”.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
The Mets should’ve quit with Estrada while they were ahead. They’re going to miss Milledge soon enough.

I’d complain about the advertizing for the Monster Breakfast Sandwich, but I lose any high ground I have when i’m going from the handle of Sauza.

That sounds gross, yet intriguing. Who sells it?

I understand starting Pierre, but only if it’s over Jones. I hate Joe Torre. Ethier should be in there regardless.
I can almost forgive him since Ethier has been sitting against lefties for a while.

Can you forgive him for only starting LaRoche because he wants Colletti to trade him for some veteran help?
by Tango and Cash on Jul 25, 2008 8:19 PM PDT up reply actions
I’ve already accepted that a LaRoche for Casey Blake or Huston Street move is coming. I’ll be happy if it doesn’t.

I hope we lose our next 6 games in a row. That might persuade the Dodger FO to give up on the season. I have. No point in trading our prospects.
by Tango and Cash on Jul 25, 2008 8:23 PM PDT up reply actions
The Yankees are in desperation mode. I’m surprised they’d trade Tabata and 3 pitching prospects for a career 4th OFer in Nady and a decent reliever in Marte.
They’re starting Brett Gardner so it helps them, but Tabata lost his golden boy status pretty damn fast. I like the move from both teams perspective.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
Yea, but Tabata’s only what, 18, 19? I get the worries about his hand, but to trade him for a couple players that might not do that much to help you win, especially because Nady can come crashing down to earth anytime, it seems they could’ve waited to use Tabata as a chip in a deal for better players.
by Tango and Cash on Jul 25, 2008 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions
I agree, but both teams fans feel like they got screwed, so it might be a fair trade. The Pirates need hope from guys like Tabata, the Yankees dont give a damn.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
Some of the Pirates’ fans at Bucs Dugout are delusional. Here’s what one guy said:
“I really wanted Tabata
...a year or two ago. I guess 19 is young enough to still develop…that’s what I’m telling myself…”
And I don’t think that’s sarcasm.

What do you think of the Liriano situation? I think Twins’ fans are in denial, because it seems like most of them don’t really care that Liriano is still in the minors.
The Twins deserve to get the hammer from the MLBPA. There’s no excuse for keeping Liriano in the minors because of Livan. Theyre just trying to screw him out of a year of service time. (This has nothing to do with the fact that I traded my team for Liriano two years ago).
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
I concur, as well. There’s really no other way to explain it. How can you say he has to work his way into a rotation with pitchers who are at best, decent, and at worst, terrible?
by Tango and Cash on Jul 25, 2008 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions
Livan knows how to win. Liriano just mention something about popcorn shrimp when they asked him how to win.

Got this from FJM:
“Twins general manager Bill Smith, on Livan Hernandez, who improved to 10-6 with a 5.29 earned-run average with Saturday’s victory over Texas: “I’ll take the (10) wins. Who do you want, a guy who’s 10-15 with a 2.80 ERA or a guy who’s 16-8 with a 7.00 ERA? I’ll take the 16-8.”
Maybe Bill Smith is just real dumb?
by Tango and Cash on Jul 25, 2008 8:43 PM PDT up reply actions
He did trade Johan Santana for nothing and then gave that money to Michael Cuddyer and Joe Nathan. I wouldn’t doubt it.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
That makes him seem less dumb, so I go with Nathan.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
But the Cuddyer thing could be enough. He combines the rare can’t hit and can’t play defense skill set.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
I only asked about Morneau because I didn’t know they re-signed Nathan until you just said that. I thought you just confused the two.

Who would you rather have on the Dodgers?
Willie Harris or Willie Mays Hayes?
by Tango and Cash on Jul 25, 2008 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions
I think Steiner had a heart attack right there. I thought it was gone, because he’s like “Way back” then a 3 second pause… “OFF THE WALL!”
by Tango and Cash on Jul 25, 2008 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions
That looked way out when it left his bat.

We really needed that to be a homer tonight.

It’s Lyons. The guy was talking about his 30th year high school reunion, and Lyons graduated high school in ‘78.

Making Lannan look like Cy Young
Leave it to our Dodgers to make a 6-and-9 pitcher for one of the worst teams in baseball look like Cy Young! Will someone on the Dodgers please not swing at every pitch they see? If we had Robinson Cano, everything would be fixed!
Might have been a bit more preceient three minutes ago. I do agree with Cano though.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
I think he’s being sarcastic about Cano. Look at the comments section from TC’s trade post.
by Tango and Cash on Jul 25, 2008 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions
And Steiner just said they don’t play real baseball in Colorado implying that it’s because teams score so many runs.
We have the ONLY team that’s still in contention that doesn’t have at least one hitter who strikes fear in opposing pitchers. There is no one on our team that an opposing pitcher faces and thinks, “Wow, this guy can hurt me with the long ball if I’m not careful.”
You’d think I wouldn’t miss half an inning when I went to go play Debaser on Rock Band.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
Well
At least it is an awesome song.

I personally only have Debaser, Gouge Away and Wave of Mutilation

All of Doolittle is on Rock Band? That is pretty cool, that game just gained points in my book.

Maybe Eckstein’s PVL presence will inspire the rest of the lineup to hit better?

Broxton
up in the pen. Maybe he comes in for the 2 inning save?
by the big grabowski on Jul 25, 2008 9:31 PM PDT reply actions
My next-door neighbor here in the ATL played high school ball with Broxton. He has told me some pretty cool stories about what a great guy he is.
No doubt, Andrew. He’s been pretty steady all year. If he had better run support, he would be better than 9-9.
Billz is by far my favorite dodgers pitcher. My grrrr wasn’t directed towards him.

Any of you think Lu is as good of a shortstop option as one of the unimpressive trade options like Wilson or Eckstein?
I do. I like Wilson because he gives us an out though. I can’t see NedCo going with a DeWitt/Hu middle infield next year. Wilson keeps us from giving Ellis or Hudson 5/75.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
I still would really like to see Young at second next year. Is his defense so bad that he can’t play there?
by the big grabowski on Jul 25, 2008 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, it’s pretty bad. I’d also like to see him out hit Juan Pierre.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
I think he would given some consistent playing time.
And wow I just typed consistent, I feel like Joe Morgan.
by the big grabowski on Jul 25, 2008 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions
I’m really not a Delwyn fan. He’s a nice bench part, better than he’s shown, but I think his peak is around a .770 OPS without defense.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
Yeah, I think that I keep hoping he will be better than he is because I like him a lot. Everytime I hear him in an interview, it sounds like he just came from the beach.
by the big grabowski on Jul 25, 2008 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions
I just don’t see a Wilson or Eckstein making that much more of an impact this season as bringing up Lu will do. I’d rather see us bring up Lu and then get Rolen for 3B.
Any Dodger fans want to trade Paulie’s .246 average for Russell Martin? I think not!
by DodgerintheAtl on Jul 25, 2008 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions
I don’t think we have much of a chance this year.
by Tango and Cash on Jul 25, 2008 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions
I just want someone functional off the bench. Someone brought up Dallas McPherson a couple days ago. He’d be interesting at least.
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
He’s stuck in the Marlin’s farm system, yeah? I think somebody said he had around a 1.000 OPS. That is interesting.
by the big grabowski on Jul 25, 2008 10:03 PM PDT up reply actions
I can’t see that happening. The Rays have focused so much on defense that I can’t see them destroying it.

What about Lowe? HIs name seems to be popping up almost everywhere.
by DodgerintheAtl on Jul 25, 2008 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions
More interesting, but do we really want to give Stults the ball every 5th day down the stretch?
Co-Author Of The Fourth Most Popular NL West Based Blog On SBN
No, I don’t think so. But I wouldn’t mind seeing what we can get for an aging Lowe who probably won’t be back no matter what.
by DodgerintheAtl on Jul 25, 2008 10:03 PM PDT up reply actions
You can’t tell me that the Yankees wouldn’t be interested in renting Lowe for the rest of the season.
by DodgerintheAtl on Jul 25, 2008 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions
What about Meloan or McDonald? Either of them options to take Lowe’s place if he gets traded?
