What's a 17th worth anyway
While the discussion about Ben Sheets might be pointless, since Ned has expressed no interest in him, others have stated they would hate to lose our first round pick which will be number 17 this year if we were to sign Sheets. Now bare in mind that Ben Sheets would be the best pitcher on the Dodger staff when discussing losing our number one pick. This is not Juan Cruz or Jason Varitek who are in the same boat.

2002 was a good year for middle picks in the first round. Drew was considered the best pick of the 2004 draft but fell because of signability issues. I'd certainly gamble that Ben Sheets would help the Dodgers more then any 17th pick but I wouldn't give that draft pick up for just one year of Sheets. It would have to be a three year deal and Sheets would be crazy to sign a three year deal in this market.

I'd sign Sheets to a two year deal
but I agree with you, its not worth giving up a 1st rounder for only one year.

I'm still on the Sheets bandwagon
but I thought CanuckDodger’s post on DT the other day was telling. From 2002 to 2006, the real first rounders (non-supplemental) that Logan White drafted have made an impact at an amazing rate:
Good: Loney, Billingsley, DeWitt, Elbert (well, about to be), Kershaw
Not Good: Morris (but traded for Manny)
To soon to tell re: Withrow & E.Martin, but I don’t view the #17 in low regard.
That said, I’d still sign Sheets to a two-year deal in a heartbeat, especially for less than $20 million.

re:
Kershaw in 2006 was a gimme. Remember he was going to pick Morris with that pick if Kershaw hadn’t fallen into our lap. Then 2006 has a whole different take if he’d blown the 7th pick on someone that no one else wanted until we got him much later.
2005 is not exactly something to write home about having wasted the pick on Hochevar and 2004 is still waiting for Elbert to make something of himself.. Elbert could still be a big zero, or he could be a solid bullpen arm. His chance of being a force in the rotation is looking slimmer and slimmer.
Logan is living off of Kershaw and one of the best drafts since the Dodger draft of 68. The more recent drafts leave much to be desired though 2008 does look very promising.
Not just Kershaw
I love Kershaw, but he still hasn’t proven anything.
Taking Kershaw @ #7 was a no-brainer, but Logan White also has Russell Martin in the 17th round, Matt Kemp in the 6th round, and drafting Loney as a 1B instead of a LHP.
There are some pretty good players in that list
losing the 17th hurts.
You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.
