*The salary figures for Brad Penny, Esteban Loaiza, and Gary Bennett are all buyouts of 2009 options (Loaiza was released in 2008)
This puts the team payroll at roughly $77.5 million as of January 4, 2009. If Manny Ramirez is brought back, plus the addition of one veteran starting pitcher, the payroll should settle into the $105-110 million range for both 2009 and 2010.

Thanks, great stuff.
It looks like next year should be a quiet offseason for us. No major free agents and not a lot of money to spend. Hopefully by then we’ll have some of Martin/Ethier/Kemp/Billz/Broxton locked up long term. Now go get Manny and Pettitte or Sheets Ned!!

I agree
especially if the starting pitcher is Sheets or Garland or Wolf, the two remaining big contracts the Dodgers will give out this season (including Manny) will be through at least 2010. The only other spots to fill next season will be of the bench variety.
It also wouldn’t surprise me if the Dodgers brought in Trevor Hoffman on a small one-year deal. It’s not something I would want, but I can see that happening. If Hells Bells is to be played at Dodger Stadium in 2009, let’s hope it’s for less than $4 million or so! :)

Yeah, agreed with everything.
Although I would be happy with 4 million for Hoffman on a 1 year deal I guess. Its better than not spending the money at all, because I think Hoffman should be decent next year (near 1 WAR). I wonder if one of the other relief arms will end up being a bargain because of how far into the offseason we already are and how many free agents are still left. Looking at whose left, there’s not too many good relievers, but I wouldn’t mind Cruz for an Affeldt type contract if it doesn’t keep us from filling our other needs.
But Ned will probably go after Hoffman because he is a “proven veteran closer”. And my apologies I’ve been rambling, nothing else to say here. I’m still hoping for Pettitte though. :)

Sure looks
different without A Jones’s old contract. Brilliant move by the Dodger front office.
If we sign Manny I have to believe they can move Pierre for 1/2 his contract and bring in a 4th outfielder sometime this year when attrition starts taking hold to the rest of the leagues old outfielders. Taveras has set the real standard for what a player with Pierre should be earning.

26-Man Roster
Technically, I have 26 people on the 25-man roster, but the difference is really negligible (~$400k or so) because most likely either Abreu will be on the major league DL (earning an MLB salary) or Jason Repko will be earning his arbitration-fueled major league contract while in Albuquerque. Meaning we will be paying at least 27 (including Schmidt) major league contracts all year anyway.
It’s going to be weird typing out Albuquerque all year.

Hu
I mistakenly left Hu off this list, but again this is a negligible position since he will be making at or very near the $400k major league minimum. Even if Hu is on the big club, it will likely be at the expense of Abreu, who may or not be on the DL.

I knew that would happen
Potential AB songs for Hu if I’m in charge:
1) “Who Can It Be Now?” by Men at Work
2) “Drive” by The Cars (if men are on base, “Hu’s gonna drive you hoooooome, tonight.”)
