Prospect Grades

Winter League Report.

Baseball America just came out with their top ten list. Two notable differences between them and the other pundits. They  pop Devaris Strange-Gordon into the seven spot which is quite remarkable for a 4th round pick. Maybe even more amazing was our number eleven pick Nathan Eovaldi taking the ten spot. You don't usually see players drafted the previous summer dominating the top 10 like this. A one/two pick is common but a 4th and 11th is very uncommon since neither were signability picks.  Either they are steals in the draft or the previous drafts have  so weakened our system that it was easy to sneak into the top ten. I prefer to think they were steals.

Quick breakdown by draft:

2008 - Ethan Martin, Josh Lindblom, Devaris Strange-Gordon, Nathan Eovaldi
2007 - Lambo, WIthrow
2006 - Nobody
2005 - DeJesus, Bell
2004 - Elbert
2002 - McDonald

How Many in 2009?

I wonder how many of these prospects will make contributions to the big club in 2009. McDonald and Elbert have a good shot to make a significant impact. I’d guess DeJesus & Paul get a cup of coffee at some point (most likely September), and Garate and Miller have chances to contribute as well (Garate moreso than Miller).

Will Lambo see Chavez Ravine in 2009?

re:

In addition to those you mentioned I’d add Travis Schlichting, Lindblom, and Castillo as pitchers who might be asked to contribute during the season. Orenduff in an emergency and Lambo for a Sept callup.

Dodger Canuck?

Who is this “Dodger Canuck” person? Signed, CanuckDodger.

Question

While I think it’s great to have 4 players from last year’s draft in our BA Top 10, do you think that’s more a reflection of their talent, or perhaps more a result of a system weakened by graduations and trades?

It’s probably a combination of both, but perhaps one factor is more prevalent than the other.

re

Combo of everything. Graduation, trades, and weaker drafts in 2005 / 2006, plus some steals in the 2008 draft. Your top pick in 2006 is not usually already a fixture in the rotation. Plus we traded the next pick to the Pirates for Manny though I doubt Morris would have cracked this top ten. We traded our 2nd pick in 2007 for Maddux and Watt might have had a shot at the top 10. 2006 looks very weak right now with what is left. 2005 has DeJesus and Bell and probably nothing else. Maybe Leach can help in the bullpen or Steve Johnson can be a back end guy but they will never see a top 10 list.

It's a mixture of both...

The system is weaker, but Eovaldi was really overlooked it seems.

Whenever I saw clips or pictures I kept thinking, “he lasted until the 11th round?” :o

For somebody who already went through Tommy John, his mechanics didn’t look bad either.

Just dreaming

but if Martin, Eovaldi, and Withrow can get it together it would be a nice trio to follow McDonald/Elbert/Lindblom up the ladder.

I still have a gut feeling that John Dutton is going to amount to something.

What catches me off guard...

…and is surprising to me is how low Baseball America has ranked Ivan DeJesus Jr among Dodger Prospects. It seems most other publications currently have Ivan pegged as the first, second, or third best prospect in the Dodgers’ system. But I cannot tell if Baseball America’s ranking of Ivan as sixth is an insult to DeJesus or perhaps a positive sign of growing strength and depth in the Dodgers’ Farm System…

Paul Lo Duca is MLB's Pablo Escobar..

re:

He is getting little respect in the top 100 lists. All of the main scouts were at the AFL and not only did he suck but his attitude sucked and it was noted publicly by Law and Sickels. Baseball HQ really dinged him. My own hopeful opinion is that he was tired, wanted to go home and once home kicked it back up a notch. I mean he was just about the best player as a AA minor leaguer in the Puerto Rican winter league.
I expect big things from him this year. His numbers sure look like a top 50 prospect to me given he is either a SS or 2nd baseman.
