Joe Torre Doesn't Expect to Return to the Dodgers After 2010
Manager Joe Torre doesn't expect to return to the Dodgers after the 2010 season when his current contract runs out, according to an AP report on SI.com:
"I have one year on my contract and I don't anticipate it being more than that. [But] I've said that before and my wife doesn't believe me at all.
I never get tired of this stuff, that's one thing I found out. You think once you win it you say, 'Ok, I got it, I don't need to do this anymore,' but you do. You need to do it."
Torre has a 179-145 record managing the Dodgers and has led them to division titles in both seasons as the manager. The 69 year-old is in the second year of his three year deal that came after managing the Yankees for 12 seasons. Torre has the most postseason wins (83) of any manager in MLB history and is tied with Bobby Cox for the most postseason appearances (14).
GM Ned Colletti said yesterday that he will sit down with Torre and talk about his future after the season ends.
As for my own personal opinion, I think this would be a sad day for the Dodgers. As much as we like to criticize some (or most) of his moves, he is a class act and has been a great leader for the team as they grew into contenders.

Nice article, Brendan. I totally agree that it will be the Dodgers’ loss once Joe decides to walk away. However, the far more significant last hurrah (at least from the fans’ perspective) taking place in 2010 will be Vin Scully’s

Wasn’t this the plan when he signed the 3 year contract?

I am not interested in Mattingly managing this club in 2011
For one thing, his interviews sound so unprepared. I think the ability to communicate is key to a good manager.

I heard him on Dan Patrick's show today and he sounded pretty good.
I agree that one of the most important things for being a manager is communication. What else bothers you about Mattingly? I like the idea of the Dodgers bringing in someone internally and Mattingly certainly has worked with the core of the Dodgers hitters and they seem comfortable with each other. Maybe Bob Schaeffer?

Anyone else having trouble opening fanposts? I'm getting server timeout messages - not always, but sometimes
Anyway, in case you can’t open my fanpost on a ticket available for Friday – here’s the text of the post:
1:07 P.M. start time screws my wife out of going so I have one ticket available. The downside is whoever uses the ticket has to sit with me! Infield Reserve, section 11 (between home and third – should be protected from the sun), Row O, seat 22 or 23. My cost for this one ticket was $81, but I’ll take anything from $0 on up to help offset the loss. Ticket already printed so you need to pick up from me in advance or at DS. I could arrange to meet on Thursday anywhere from Manhattan Beach to Chatsworth as long as it is within a few miles of the 405 or 118 freeways.
If you are interested, e-mail me (my address is in my profile) before 7:00 A.M. Thursday morning. Make sure it is clear what your TBLA handle is. A name and a contact phone number would be appreciated.
Last incentive: LA is 13-1 at DS this season when I attend, perhaps sitting with me is good karma!
[Hint for Tripon: at 1:00 P.M., doughnuts would still be fresh, right? :) j/k]

Yes
The site is going really slow right now, or not loading at all. It will hopefully be running okay again soon.

Also
I’d pay $1081 to go to the game Dave, if only I lived in LA. :-( (Well, there’s the $1081 part too…)

Who's Next?
We obviously are going to loose Joe to retirement or senility sometime. I don’t want to go in new direction, the direction we are going is just fine. How does Joe get a successor in a year or two. I really don’t look forward to picking random managers and seeing if they work out, firing them and then hiring Jim Tracy again.
The caveat was that if we keep on winning the World Series, he’ll probably stick around a bit longer. I suggest the Dodgers do just that to keep Joe and his leadership around a bit longer and get a successor ready.

Torre leaving?
I’m not sure why it makes a lot of difference …..
he’s on record as saying Don Zimmer taught him most of what made him a success.
Just hire Zimmer!
