Game Thread Blues
As co-manager of this site it kind of sucks that I don't even like to participate in our own game threads when the team is losing because I know it will be filled with stupid (not ignorant) comments as each player comes up short. Baseball is a game of failure but that does not mean every time someone fails it is a reason to post a comment about how they suck or analyze why they suck based on one at bat or even a series of at bats like Casey Blake has had in the NLCS. Matt Kemp is no more stupider today after his key strikeout then he was when he hit the home run in game one of the Division Series, or played like the best CF in the NL all year long. This team had the best record in baseball, it is going head to head in the NLCS with last years World Champions. They are doing their best. We have some great posters on this site, but we also have added a group of posters who are just as irritating as hearing "Phillies Suck" at Dodger Stadium. I can tell you right now, if you like to chant "Phillies Suck" at the stadium you are probably a dick. Some of you may not know it, so use that as a guideline.
Anyway it is great for me to read comments like this one below.
was watching at school, now at a computerwas watching at a modest, quiet place at school where there were only a few modest fans, not really hardcore, couldn’t really express my joy like I usually do…
anyway, I read part of the last game thread… and seriously… some of you have no fucking decency taking personal shots or character shots at Matt Kemp. He has been the most valuable player on the team for the entire season! give me a fucking break!
i know i know im being a debbie downer after a victory in a must-win playoff game but i will never stop shaking my head at such “fan support” like that… don’t be like a Philly fan, please.

agreed
too much kemp hate after that strikeout…
Because when I think of Boris Diaw, I think of Beethoven and the age of Romanticism....
Agreed wholeheartedly
A pet peeve of mine is people who get down on their team. if it ever happens that i do it, whether here, or at a UofA football game, or wherever I would hope to be called out on it.
Good post, I hope people take it to heart.
I can understand getting down on your team
If they legitimately suck, or if they show no signs of being able to win certain types of games (i.e., can’t win games once trailing), but the Dodgers aren’t that team. Baseball is not a sport of time. As long as this Dodgers team has at-bats, they have a shot at winning, as they’ve shown they can win in any scenario all year long.
They were down four runs twice on Thursday and nearly erased that lead twice. They got through the rough spots yesterday to be down only one run and do just enough to get them to two runs to win the game. I’m convinced that this team is capable of overcoming any deficit against any team. If they don’t, we know they did everything in their power to.
Getting ultra sad at one strikeout, trailing by 1-run in the 8th, and a 0-1 series deficit is ridiculous, and it is pretty annoying to see so much negativity being brought up for a team that doesn’t give up and won’t as long as they’re still playing. In this case, fans should take on the persona on their teams, and this Dodgers team is a never say die team. The game threads should reflect that, not drown in sorrow because they got out of the third with one run instead of two and blame it all on one player.

Nicely said. That kind of talk seems especially stupid considering how many times we’ve come back late in the game. Think of Game 2 of the NLDS and now this game earlier… the Dodgers ain’t giving up and we shouldn’t either.
You wanna know how great baseball is? The greatest basketball player ever left his sport to play baseball.
I have faith in the Dodgers.
I have faith that the commentators here can raise the level of discourse.
I understand your frustration Phil,
but negativity in a game threads is definitely not a phenomenon unique to True Blue LA. I think it is a lot worse at the NFL blogs on SBNation. I don’t disagree with anything you said, but I think there are enough smart and thoughtful people on the site that the good outweighs the bad.
of course there are
the NFL skews much stupider and younger.
anyhow, the bandwagon just gets packed around this time of year. it is even worse back east, everyone has suddenly found the yankee cap that was hidden in the closet for the past nine years.

Since you mentioned it
I’m a young guy, far from uptight, but I’ve watched with real embarrassment as fans at Dodger Stadium have thrown beer at guys in Phillies jerseys, shoved Cardinal fans, and chanted "Phillies Suck" while they were beating the Dodgers 5-1. Yes, I know the same thing might happen to me if I showed up at CBP wearing a Dodgers hat, but that’s the point – the fans at Dodger Stadium used to be better than that. At least most of them did. The bad apples are still a minority, but they’re vocal, grating, and probably singlehandedly responsible for the Angels’ rise in popularity here in SoCal. I love the Dodgers and I’ll never stop going to games, but I do hope the Raiders move back to Los Angeles, just so that a few of the makeshift Dodger fans have somewhere else to go come October.
I found it particularly disturbing
that someone posted a link to a YouTube video of this exact type of behavior in one of the comments sections recently. He got called out on it pretty quickly, but it bothers me that it was even posted.
That being said, I still think most of the fans at Dodger stadium are pretty decent.
after attending numerous games at CBP
I would say that Dodger fans are great/mild compared to that of philly fans. You can not go to a game in philly wearing another teams jersey and have an enjoyable time. The few dodger fans that are assholes in california are what every single philly fan is in philly.

That doesn't sound like a fair statement
Surely you are not representing that you encountered every single fan in Philadelphia. Also, it stands to reason that your experience is better at D.S because you are rooting for the home team there while you are supporting the road team in Philadelphia. But to say there are a few bad apples in LA while “every single philly fan” is an asshole is absurd.

I was exaggerating a bit
but Ive been a dodger fan in NY (mets) DC (nats) Pitt, SD, and Zoa and not had any issues. Sure they razz u a bit but its all in good fun. In philly there is no fun just pure ignorance, not every fan but there are alot more “bad apples” in Philly then in any other place I have been.
I have even gone to the Bronx with hard core Red Sox fans for soxs/yanks and it was a far better experience than all three times I went to Philly with the dodgers.

yeah i dont understand the "phillies suck" chant when were trailing 1-0
Because when I think of Boris Diaw, I think of Beethoven and the age of Romanticism....
the people who chant philly suck and throw food at players arent real fans
they are people who want to represent their city or region more so than the team or players, let alone the game. they understand the very basic aspects of the sport and dont really understand that the game is a metaphor for life and what we are watching is art not science
The Coarsening of Society
Why is everything getting so disgusting nowadays. I think it began when “suck”, with its sexual connotations of degradation, began to be a synonym for “being awful.” It is interesting that a pleasurable experience (at least for the receiver) is made to be somehow a weapon against the person giving the pleasure! I won’t go into the psycho-sexual overtones of this phenomenon (power? fear? anger over feminism? masculinity?), but I hated it when I was at the Dodger Blue game and people all around me were chanting “Rockies Suck”—-and with such joy and venom that it was truly revolting.
