Around SBN: Tiger Woods, Tony Romo Grouped Together At Pebble Beach

What's in a name?

Throught the annals of history, many a name has spoken strongly of an athlete's ability to dominate their game.  For the sake of it, I am saying that the names I am listing were great because their mama's and papa's bestowed them with the name of a champion!

Star-divide

Baseball names of the past and present that I have admired with big guy names:  Boog Powell (Definitely could work in a steel mill shaping steel), Babe Ruth (A classic), Bo Jackson (This guy was compared to a wild boar once), Frank Howard (He sounds mean and big and bad), Ryan Howard (Sounds like the foreman to a wrecking crew), Lance Berkman (I just think he looks like his name.  Like a big-barrelled baseball bat), Hack Wilson (Probably took a big hack), Hammerin' Hank Aaron (The guy is referenced in a Chuck Berry song and hammers can do damage) Phil Coke (Only a reliever, but his name offers many comments), Clayton Kershaw (His name sounds like strikeouts to me.  And Texas), Nate Mclouth (Almost could be Mclout!)

Notable Mentions:  Frank House, George "Ox" Eckhardt. Not great players, but their names gave them the potential.

Feel free to vote on this poll, or add some of your favorite athlete names, any sport is fine.  It's all in good fun and what else can we do until spring training?

Homer Bailey

I don’t know why I like it so much. It sounds like he should have been playing in 1927 or something. There are plenty of names like this in the Hall of Fame.

I always have loved the name Lastings Milledge

Thats like the baseball version of R.W. McQuaters (Robert William McQuarters II)

a football player whos name makes you believe he’s the head of an investment firm or a famous naval captain.

William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.

I remember that guy.

He was a corner for the 49ers a few years back. His name just rolls off the tongue. I could definitely see R.W. McQuarters appearing on the Charlie Rose show to discuss the latest economic crisis.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia

just because it’s so epically long

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

That kid was born and named to play baseball by his parents.

To play baseball, or man the drum kit in an 80’s New Wave of British Heavy Metal Band.

I like the name Craig Monroe

I always kind of liked the player too.

Not sure he’s even still in baseball though.

Craig Monroe has a great Wikipedia write up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Monroe

Among other things, his mom is named Marilyn Monroe and he was busted in 2004 for trying to steal a 30 dollar belt from a department store.

If there was a MLB Team in Memphis, I think it would be mandatory for them to sign Elivis Andrus

to poach from Bill Simmons

I also love the idea of a white guy being named Reggie Willits

also I’ve always heard legends about “Calvin Coolidge Julius Caesar Tuskahoma McLish” and “Van Lingle Mungo”

William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.

The funny thing is

Reggie Willits is about the whitest looking guy on the planet. There is actually a guy out there named Van Lingle Mungo?

I like loop

but I always preferred “circuit” in describing leagues (“senior circuit” or “junior circuit”) and/or homers (“circuit clout”).

I should try to do a game preview and game recap next year one day just using a bunch of old school baseball terms.

How about a whole game thread?

Does anybody ever use throwback jersey’s anymore? That would be appropriate.
