He's a stud starting pitcher

I’m not sure I’d call him an ace though. His xFIP isn’t even as good as Jorge de la Rosa’s

by stillnotah8er on Oct 3, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm sure he could be. In fact he probably will be

In our GT, I wept uncontrollably at the thought of facing him 4 times a season for 10 years. But just because he’ll be awesome when it’s all said and done now doesn’t mean he’s an OMG Ace right now.

Still, congratulations to him for a fantastic capper to an amazing sophomore season.

I was at Camelback this March to witness him dominate the Rockies on his 21st birthday. He hit a home run over my head that day, ironically off Franklin Morales

by Andrew T. Fisher on Oct 3, 2009 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Anyway I'm not even sure

we can agree what “ace” means.

But right now he’s probably the best pitcher on the Dodgers, so he’s their “ace” at least. He’s certainly one of the best young pitchers in baseball. The ace thing feels like a semantical argument to me.

The commenter formerly known as "Dashiell".

by underdog on Oct 3, 2009 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions

This is true

Rockies fans are frustrated with the same ascertainment that they don’t have an “Ace” either, though Jimenez should be on a lot of Cy Young ballots. But if you are to assume “Ace” is a Cy Young-contending pitcher you want on the mound in Game 7 of the World Series against any opponent, Jimenez and Kershaw probably both are close but not quite there

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

by Andrew T. Fisher on Oct 3, 2009 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

True

But I guess I don’t quite define an ace that way. (And I wouldn’t feel that under confident with Kershaw or Jimenez on the mound in that situation for that matter) Either way, there are very few pitchers who meet that criteria so if they’re on the next tier, and on the cusp of stardom, that’s pretty great. I’ll take it.

The commenter formerly known as "Dashiell".

by underdog on Oct 3, 2009 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

I’m not saying above was my definition of ace, but rather my inferred definition from MSM. Either way, it doesn’t really matter

FIP (and i would assume XFIP) is very flawed because it completely disreguards hits when it’s just irresponsible to do that. It is just ignorant to think that all hits allowed are on the defense.

by Ivdown on Oct 3, 2009 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I was told xFIP was the en vogue stat at TBLA :)

Lol

I’ve never liked FIP, and I believe XFIP normalizes homerun rates, which I think is even worse. I just cant see using a stat that doesn’t take into account something like hits allowed for a pitcher, idk, lol.

I love that picture

because I loathe Ringer the mascot.

But I don’t know why any of my fellow D fans have to say “Rockies suck.” They clearly do not. They had an incredible run and played incredible ball for several months. And aren’t done yet. I wish them luck in the NLCS.

Plus, the team I really hate is the Cards. God I hate those mofos. Bad history there.

True

don’t get me wrong, I hate Ringer’s existence. But I don’t hate the Rockies team for him.

Plus the Cards make up for lack of mascot by just being a generally smug “best fans in baseball” kind of franchise.
