USC’s defense has been embarrassing tonight. Oregon runs the same damn play over and over again, and they all take hesitation time in the backfield before materializing.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 31, 2009 6:35 PM PDT reply actions

Oregon's run defense is much more stout than Oregon State

last week USC ran all over the Beavs.

This is probably the best run defense I have seen all year.

by Michael White on Oct 31, 2009 6:41 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, they have done a great job. Barkley will have his work cut out for him in the 2nd half. But it won’t matter if USC can’t stop Vince Young Jeremiah Masoli

Russ Mitchell

representing today with five runs batted in, three hits, home run and double. Trayvon went 1 for 4. Guerra another inning of scorless relief.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Oct 31, 2009 6:42 PM PDT reply actions

In your opinion

Will a strong appearance for Mitchell (seemingly out of nowhere) be enough to put him on the prospect map? Or is the fact that he’s doing it in AZ keep the opinion of him down….

Props to 68elcamino427

Today at 2:03pm, talking about the middle of the Phillies’ lineup:

They are all able to generate tremendous bat speed and are able to get the "point of percussion" of the bat on the ball, middle bottom half of the ball, to middle bottom third of the ball, earlier in the strike zone rather than later, but they can do later too.
There are certain of the same things they all do when they swing the bat.
Charlie Manuel knows how to teach it.

Look at where Werth hit that pitch from Pettitte. It seemed like it was 5 feet in front of the plate! Nice call.

Thanks dude.

Blake Smith, picked #56 by the Dodgers in the 2009 draft, is now following True Blue LA on Twitter. I am also following him, of course.

Here’s an idea: since doing nothing is not working for USC on defense, how about a blitz every now and then. If you are going to give up 10 yards a play, why not gamble?

The year I move from San Diego, and they are going to the fucking Holiday Bowl. At best.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 31, 2009 7:39 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Sorry to hear about USC

I actually considered going to college there (not for the football, though). I’m an Ohio State fan, and they already won today.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 31, 2009 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, it’s been a good run for USC. Oregon has got to be kicking itself for than embarrassing opener against Boise State. Otherwise they’d have a legitimate claim to #1.

At least I can watch the Series now. Oh wait, two teams I hate.

Fuck Halloween.

Cole Hamels did it in the right order

Had his great postseason first, before flaming out in all four starts this October. However, he did get booed as he walked off, which I thought was surprising until I remembered where the game was.

This pleases me greatly.

It always is on small sample sizes. Just thought it was interesting.

By the way, it might help your arguments if you explain why you don’t like something other than calling it useless or simply saying you don’t believe in it.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 31, 2009 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

because FIP is not his ACTUAL performanance...

and in the games they play.. actual performance is what you are based on

by matthewmafa on Oct 31, 2009 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I get your point

but if you are trying to accurately figure out just how good someone is — what they alone are responsible for — it is important to dig deeper.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 31, 2009 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions

One thing I never understood about FIP

Why is it always assumed that ERA will regress back to where FIP is? If a team’s defense has been bad for a pitcher, why is this due to luck? Can’t the team’s defense simply just be that bad?

by dodgerpreacher on Oct 31, 2009 8:54 PM PDT up reply actions

If a pitcher plays behind the same defense

his ERA likely won’t reach his FIP (assuming the defense is extreme good or bad), but the FIP is useful to extract his individual performance — independent of those teammates — out of the raw numbers.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 31, 2009 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Before tonight

the worst loss of the Pete Carroll Era was a 27-16 loss at Notre Dame in 2001. Since that game, USC was 92-11, with only three losses by more than four points. The losses:

4,7,3,3,3,2,4,1,7,6,3

They are currently down 44-20. Not the best October for me.

My last USC comment of the night (maybe)

USC has allowed the same number of points in their last 3 games (110) than they did in their last 12 games last season (also 110).

Brett Myers

“the best bowler on the Phillies.”

He bowled a 298. That is a great score but the only way to get it is to gack on the 12th roll. 11 strikes, then an 8. Ouch.

Eric

I subscribed to Play Index, its pretty cool. Did you know that in 1756 plate appearances by RH Batters against JR Richard at the Dome, he only gave up 9 home runs.

by bhsportsguy on Oct 31, 2009 9:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Small sample size alert

in the NLCS at home against LHP this year: .200/.429/.800 (1 for 5, 2 K, 2 BB, and the “3-to-5 strikes HR” off Wolf)

by Eric Stephen on Oct 31, 2009 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess he needs to swing to get strikes at home

by bhsportsguy on Oct 31, 2009 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions

What's strange about Matt Stairs

He only had 4 plate appearances against left handed pitchers this year in the regular season, he had 125 against right handed pitchers.

World Series Failure

Took the kids trick or treating for an hour or so, not one house was watching the series, I kept on peaking in to see if I could see the score.

Saw a couple of football on TV and some CSI or something, no baseball, no one watches.
