3rd Annual True Blue PostSeason Pool

Now that the World Series contenders are set in stone it is time to start the 3rd annual True Blue World Championship Pool. This is how the contest grid looked last year:

JoeyJoe has won this contest two years in a row but I thought we'd lost him as a poster. However by the skin of his teeth he got his picks in as he attempts to defend his crown. If he's right on the Dodgers we will lose 90% of the picks in the first round.

Comments will be closed at 01:00 PCT 10/7/09

Make your picks like so

Red Sox  over Angels / 5 Games
Yankees over Twins/3 Games
Red Sox over Yankees/7 Games

Dodgers over Cardinals/5 Games
Phillies over Rockies/4 Games
Dodgers over Phillies/6 Games

Dodgers over RedSox / 6 Games

The Tie Breaker will be how many games will the Dodgers win in the Post Season

TieBreaker -11 Games

2nd TieBreaker - World Series MVP-which does not need to be chosen until we know who is playing and only those still in the running would need to make that pick.

Each correct series win is worth 5 points, Each correct choice of the number of games is worth 1 point.

Put your choices in the comment.

Good Luck

My Netflix queue needed to be cleared out. It was a tough job, but I was man enough to do it. Also, MLB.tv is 2-3 minutes behind the live broadcast, which kept me coming around less unless I wanted every game I watched to be ruined.

Hopefully, i’m wrong. It’s a crapshoot anyway, I guess.

Geez, everybody picked the Dodgers to win the World Series. Doesn’t make you less of a fan to be a little less expectant, you know. :o

Even if I wasn’t a Dodger fan I would expect them to make the World Series this year…maybe not win it, lol, but get there anyway.

by Ivdown on Oct 7, 2009 3:36 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have no expectations for any of the teams

except the Yankees in the first series given the very large advantage they should have in game 1.

Other than that, all teams are within 5% pythag win%, which means in a five or seven game series if you pick the winner you are just getting lucky. Given that, I see no reason not to pick the Dodgers to win it all.

by Paul Scott on Oct 7, 2009 2:51 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

very tough postseason so I decided to pick the Dodgers but to me it could be anyone but the Twins or Rockies.

by Phil Gurnee on Oct 7, 2009 7:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure

But Pythag is full season analysis which doesn’t necessarily play out that way in the postseason, and the better team is always going to be a slight favorite, as proven by simulations. Maybe it’s 3-5% in most cases, but it still exists.

Call me crazy if I think knowing the Dodgers have less than a 15 percent chance of winning the WS and all but a few picking them to win lacks a bit of objectivity. :o

I like the fact the

Cardinals are very vulnerable to LHP and we have that up the wazoo. Of course if Pujols wakes up and systematically destroys our LHP then we have a problem. My biggest concern is Broxton closing out games on the road since I expect these to be very close games. Well I have plenty of concerns but that is one of my biggest. 20 walks in 41 innings is concerning. At home I have as much confidence in him as I would if Mariano was on the mound, on the road, not so much.

I think you mean 11, right? Or do you have the Angels beating the Dodgers in the WS?

by Eric Stephen on Oct 7, 2009 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If the Dodgers get into the World Series

my tie breaker is going out the door since it has to be eleven for a world championship. I used it because I expected many TBLA members to pick them to go all they way and if they don’t it eliminates them right off the bat.

I remember now, that after last year I meant to use how many games will the Dodgers lose in the postseason since that actually has some variability even if they win the World Championship. Oh well, a year is a long time to remember something.

by meercatjohn on Oct 7, 2009 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He could be hedging his bet in some bizarre way, although he’s not the only person to pick the Dodgers in the WS and 10 wins. If the Dodgers get to and don’t win the WS, he might get a leg up on those that picked the Dodgers to lose in the WS if he racked up points in the earlier round.

Or maybe I’m just overthinking it.

by Eric Stephen on Oct 7, 2009 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK

I am confused obviously on how this contest works. Can anyone explain? I just added up the wins for both NL series and the World Series which adds up to 10 games. But I don’t think i understand what I did.

FYI

You guys don’t need to put the tie breaker games in. It is obvious based on the picks and the spreadsheet will figure it out. And so no one else looks silly, if you are picking the Dodgers to win the World Series the only choice is 11 wins.
3+4+4 is the only path to the World Championship.

Love Is Blind

I agree with this essentially being a crapshoot with the exception the Yankees with the best record in baseball were given two advantages (picking schedule and opponent extra regular season game), its very hard for any of us not to pick the Dodgers. To offset this, here is an interesting setup:

1: List playoff scenario where Dodgers are WS champs
2: List playoff scenario where Dodgers are not WS champs

Dodgers WS champs, use 1, Dodgers not, use 2. This would be interesting to force us to both use our blue colored goggles and to take them off.

Next year maybe?
