Not a surprise
Though I still held up hope that AZ would do something stupid and take Wade given how poor their bullpen was.

Good move for the Diamondbacks
I expect we will regret this trade. Since we don’t need Garland for the playoffs and we probably could have had Stults/Haeger/Elbert/McDonald pitching against the also rans I don’t think what he did was exactly needed by this team. He did pitch well I’ll give him that, but as many have noted is was against some of the most anemic offenses in baseball.
Then again if Padilla had also not been so effective we probably would have needed him. Good luck Etanislao Toni Abreu

We're just making room for DeJesus!
Although with the Belliard love that Torre is showing, I’m going to guess that DeJesus is going to have a hard time breaking in 2010.

At the end of the year we will have no 2nd baseman on the major league
roster unless you consider DeWitt a 2nd baseman.
Abreu traded
Hudson Free Agent
Belliard Free Agent
Loretta should retire
DeWitt and DeJesus
But Ned will sign a FA 2nd baseman. Seems to be a plethora of them available.

Whatever we do ... if Jody Reed won't sign a multiyear deal for millions
do NOT trade Pedro Martinez for Delino DeShields!!!!
by Seanny Rotten on Oct 9, 2009 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Are you kidding me?
Do you think Ned will ever let Bellie go? He has Ned special written all over him. Belliard will get Loretta’s contract to be the backup for Dewitt and probably keep Castro and some castoff to be named later. Odog still isn’t out of the question either depending on what interest he gets.

If I had to guess today - Belliard DeWitt platoon at 2B
by delias man on Oct 9, 2009 2:12 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
That's what I was thinking too
Belliard can be had on the cheap, and Dewitt is good enough to keep on the roster anyway as he has value as a utility player. See how DeJesus looks recovering from injury. If DeJesus recovers nicely, he can fill in where needed….
by Michael White on Oct 9, 2009 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The only problem with that is that we know Torre won't play DeJesus over Belliard if he thinks Belliard gives him what he wants as a 2nd baseman.
by Tripon on Oct 9, 2009 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The only way I see DeJesus contributing next year would be due to an injury to Casey Blake (Dewitt would replace him and DeJesus would provide depth at second) Rafael Furcal or Belliard. And that’s only if DeJesus is playing his way onto the ML roster—- similar to what Abreu did this year.
by Michael White on Oct 9, 2009 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
DeJesus will play winter ball and be ready to have a meaningful role in 2010. Sure they won’t let him be the starting 2nd baseman but I can easily see them weaving him into the lineup in the 2nd half. Belliard / DeWitt would make a decent platoon option until he’s ready.
Or Ned may simply sign a full time 2nd baseman between Lopez, Sanchez, and Polanco. Or Hudson could simply accept arbitration from us. He must know his injuries are going to limit his ability to sign a long term deal.

I don't think we're going to offer Hudson arbitration anymore.
Hudson earned nearly $8 million this year with the incentives, no way in heck the Dodgers are going to want Hudson near that price.
by Tripon on Oct 9, 2009 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nor should they
I’m fine with Belliard / DeWitt platooning for a year. I’d rather focus on possible upgrades on 1b and C, and SP.
by oshea2002 on Oct 9, 2009 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not sure you'll find much for 1B and C
I agree that the Dodgers should keep costs down at 2B with an option like Belliard (who will be cheap) and Dewitt and DeJesus already in the system.
As for SP, I wouldn’t go crazy there either. I’ve stated that I’d like to take a flier on Harden (pay him around what Hudson got) and let Garland walk. I am still optimistic that we can get contributions from Elbert and/or McDonald in the rotation next year.
by Michael White on Oct 9, 2009 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not a huge J Mac guy, but Elbert I’d like to see get a shot.
I think Harden is a decent play. Even then, assuming Wolf and Garland walk, we’d have
Kershaw, Bills, Harden, Kuroda, Elbert? Not too bad IMO. But at the end of the day, I don’t think the team has improved at all over the offseason.
by oshea2002 on Oct 9, 2009 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like Harden too.
But the guy is good for 160 really good innings, after that you are praying.
by NotJoeTorre on Oct 9, 2009 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Between Harden and Kuroda, we could get 35 really good starts for about $20m :)
by Eric Stephen on Oct 9, 2009 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
This team doesn't really need to improve much though...
I mean, they did have the best record in the NL. The changes are Harden/McDonald (because there is no way Harden can stay healthy all year) over Wolf; and who knows how that would come out, and Elbert over the rotating 5th starter spot. That doesn’t sound like a step backwards to me.
Like you, i would love an upgrade to Catcher and first base, but I don’t see any options out there.
Besides, I expect improvements from Kershaw and Kemp as they are a year older and will start coming into their prime. Also, I expect a bounce back year from Billingsley assuming he doesn’t shovel any snow this winter.
by Michael White on Oct 9, 2009 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
kershaw is going to be 22
wouldn’t call that prime

Sheets works too
Did he even pitch this year?
But Sheets and Harden are the types of players I’d target (not Lackey.) It’ll still be a buyers market and taking advantage of these injury prone players with a ton of talent sounds pretty good to me.
by Michael White on Oct 9, 2009 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He did not pitch, but if I was Frank, he could sure rehab on my dime.

“Rehab on my dime” seems like a great title for a book.

That is also what VH1 tells washed up celebs.
Or maybe 51 Productions, but either way…

I'd be willing to bet heavily that the Dodgers offer Hudson
arbitration.

with
the hope he turns it down? I like the guy a lot.
by NotJoeTorre on Oct 9, 2009 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Either way
I’d be happy with Hudson for another year or with draft picks. It will be curious to find out if Canuck is right about his contract.
by meercatjohn on Oct 9, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I screwed up my comment
I want the picks too. I was just told that the Hudson ARB case was hammered out already and he can be offered it. But that is just blog talk so It is subject to change :)
by NotJoeTorre on Oct 9, 2009 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
agree
if he accepts or not, i don’t care much
either way is fine with me, it’s not like dewitt or dejesus or the FA class is desirable.
Don’t like Hudson much but a lot more than Polanco (UGH) or whoever else is out there.
I don’t like Belliard, but Polanco makes me want to barf. Maybe Lopez/Sanchez if they are wiling to sign for 1 year, but I doubt it.

Hudson CAN'T Be Offered Arbitration
That’s in his contract.. Hudson’s Type A status was a big problem for Hudson last off-season so his agent made sure to eliminate that problem for the next off-season.
by CanuckDodger on Oct 9, 2009 3:19 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I have never seen that reported
You might be right but it is the first I’ve heard of it. It certainly makes sense from an agents standpoint. I’ll wait to hear from Eric on this before conceding your point.
by meercatjohn on Oct 9, 2009 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think that is the case. Or at least I haven’t seen anything reported to that affect. I need to look through old emails to Tony Jackson to see if this issue was covered or not.

it ended out pretty well
but i still don’t get why we signed hudson.

I think A-Rod just shed his "October choke" status.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but with all bashing he’s endured as Jeter gets deified (typical media “good vs. evil” manufactured storyline), I’m kind of glad to see it!
by sarcastro9 on Oct 9, 2009 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
personally, I'd like to see Hudson stay
but I can’t imagine he would, given that the Dodgers went with Belliard for the playoffs. Don’t get me wrong- I understand WHY they did it, and I’m sure Hudson does, too, being the team guy he is and all. But unless they offer him an unseemly amount of money (which they won’t), I can’t imagine them saying, “Hey, we know we didn’t pick you at the most critical moment of the year, but how ’bout coming back next year?”
Having said all this, I hope they go with DeWitt, no matter how awesome Belli continues to be for us this postseason.

Money talks
If he thinks he can make the most here, he’ll stay

Ken Gurnick has some details on the Abreu grievance settlement:
A settlement was reached in which Abreu received an additional 30 days service credit and the difference in salary between his Minor League and Major League rate, a baseball source said
The Dodger postseason media guide lists Abreu with 1 year, 127 days of service time, which means he probably won’t be a Super Two after next season if he is on the roster all season.
