Six Degrees of Separation
I used to play that game all the time when I was a kid.
Baseball affords a different way to play, instead of appearing with, you can play six degrees by who was traded for whom. It's kinda neat to see the way in which past Dodgers have turned into current Dodgers.
For example, did you know that there is a direct link between Mike Piazza and Andre Ethier? Well, neither did I.
So Mike Piazza was drafted by the Dodgers in 1988, as legend has it, a favor to Tommy Lasorda. As the story goes, he became all sorts of awesome, winning Rookie of the Year in 1992, Silver Slugger awards, All Star Game appearances. As a kid growing up in the 90s, he was my favorite Dodger.
Then after six seasons, he's traded to the Marlins with Todd Zeile for Gary Sheffield, Charles Johnson, Bobby Bonilla, Manuel Barrios and Jim Eisenreich. Of course this broke my little twelve year old heart, but hey Gary Sheffield. He's an All-Star! He can hit! He can publicly lobby for a trade?
Well in 2002 he got his wish, going to the Braves for Brian Jordan, Odalis Perez, and Andrew Brown. Current A's relief pitcher Andrew Brown was but a minor leaguer then, and two years later he became the Player to be Named Later in a trade for Milton Bradley. As acquiring Milton Bradley always proves to be a mistake no mater what team makes it, eventually he had to go.
That trade came in 2005, as he went to the A's with Antonio Perez for A's minor league prospect...Andre Ethier!
How about that, a direct link between my favorite player as a kid and my favorite player as a young adult.

I wish we could go back in time and take our chances
with keeping Mike Piazza and seeing if we ended up with Ethier anyways.

Love this stuff
Back in 2008, I traced origins of the entire 40-man roster. I need to do an update to that post sometime this offseason.

He is probably soon to be an ex-Dodger
But Jason Repko’s history is a little more than stated.
1996
Signed Scott Radinsky as a free agent
>> Radinsky signed as a (Type B?) free agent by the Cardinals for the 1999 season; as compensation the Dodgers selected Jason Repko (supplemental round).
The most recent Dodger compensation picks:
Aaron Miller (Dodgers-1s) – Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Derek Lowe
Chris Withrow (Dodgers-1) – Pick from RedSox as compensation for Free Agent Julio Lugo
James Adkins (Dodgers-1s) – Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Julio Lugo
So for future reference:
The Dodgers signed Lowe as a free agent for the 2005 season. (The Red Sox received the Dodgers 1st round pick as part of their compensation and drafted Craig Hansen, who was also part of the Manny / Jason Bay deal.)
2006
Dodgers trade for Julio Lugo, sending Joel Guzman (2002 Dodger international signing) and Sergio Pedroza (3rd round 2005, Dodgers) to Tampa Bay.

Example
1987
Signed Pedro Astacio as an amateur FA (Dominican Republic)
>> traded to Colorado in 1997 for Eric Young
>> who was traded to the Cubs with Ismael Valdez in 1999 for Terry Adams, Brian Stephenson, and Chad Ricketts
>> Ricketts was traded with Luke Prokopec to Toronto in 2001 for Cesar Izturis and Paul Quantrill
>> Quantrill signed as a Type A FA with the Yankees in 2004; as compensation the Dodgers selected Blake DeWitt (round 1) and Justin Orenduff (sandwich pick)

I was worried I was repeating an old topic...
but I’d love to help with the offseason update if you’d like :)

It's never old! :)
Seriously, it is a cool topic. Looking back on that 2008 list, there are a ton of new faces, as there will be in 3 weeks or so once some new blood arrives on the 40-man

Ethier Fun Facts

36. Fans don’t leave Dodger games early to beat the traffic. They leave early so they don’t get struck and killed by an Andre Ethier walk-off homerun.
Kudos to the blog guy, because this was written last season in September.

Another great link
Linking maligned superstars 11 years apart
Signed Kevin Brown as a free agent in winter 1998
>>>traded for Jeff Weaver, Brandon Weeden, Yhency Brazoban, and cash in 2003
>>>Weaver signed with the Angels in 2006, giving the Dodgers compensatory picks Bryan Morris and Preston Mattingly
>>>Drafted Andy LaRoche in 39th round in 2003
>>>Traded Morris and LaRoche as part of 3-way deal to get Manny Ramirez
