Just wanted to have it on record that Olney said this a week early. I suppose if he is wrong, he can say he “heard” wrong or pass the blame :)

The Gold Gloves are coming out today and Orlando Hudson is winning for NL 2B. That’s the only scoop I’ve got. #Dodgers #goldglove

To clarify
Gold Gloves are not voted on by the baseball writers; managers and coaches vote for the GG

Apparently only AL Gold Gloves will be announced today; NL announced Wednesday.

Hard to fathom ODawg winning the GG, more to playing the position then mooching fly balls from the right fielder. He was great going to his left, but I sure didn’t see any GG ability going to right, turning the DP, or tagging runners.
Hopefully this will help him get the contract he desires.

Davey Lopes was the only Dodger 2B to win a GG, winning in 1978.
No Dodger CF has won a GG, which began in 1957. The only Dodger outfielders to win a GG are Dusty Baker (1981) and Raul Mondesi (1995, 1997)

How tough could LF in the Coliseum have been? It was tiny.

Didn’t the Red Sox play more traditional defense that night? For an exhibition, I enjoyed the oddity of the Dodgers’ OF alignment that night.

did you go?
by delias man on Nov 10, 2009 11:11 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes
parked downtown that night, took a cab to the game. After the game the cab lines were too long so we walked ~4 miles back to the car. Fun times. :)
Actually, it was a great night, even including the humor and horror of seeing one of my cousin’s co-workers be one of the worst racists ever.

It is hard to tell from the box but it looks like Kielty started in LF
And yes BOS played a traditional defense.

Hudson
I think we HAVE to offer arb. If he accepts, so what? Ned was willing to pay him 8M last season. Unless the Dodgers want to go super cheap at 2B, I think we need to grab those free picks.

We have to
and if we don’t, I’d sure like to hear the explanation.

With all due respect to those mortgage commercials on the radio all the time (I forget the company name), offering Hudson arbitration is “the easiest no brainer in the history of mankind.” :)

Say he signs with Washington
The 1st pick in the 2nd round is nice.
by silverwidow on Nov 10, 2009 10:48 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
+1
and we get a supplemental pick which would even be before it… around mid 30s probably… and washingtons would be around 40 or so… and we got aaron miller at 36
by matthewmafa on Nov 10, 2009 1:31 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Supplemental picks are ranked in inverse order of the picking team, not the new team.
by Eric Stephen on Nov 10, 2009 1:45 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
alright
so probably around the end of the 30s to begin of the 40s… still a nice supplmentamal pick

I really like that guys matter of fact voice and deliver for some reason
on those commercials. Or maybe I don’t like it? Either way, I have to listen to the whole commercial everytime for some reason. Same with the Tapatio and Safe Light Repair Safe Light Replace commercials.

I absolutely despise that guy’s point and ALWAYS change the station when the commercial comes on the radio.

I'll try to play devil's advocate here
What kind of salary could he command in arbitration? Freddy Sanchez just signed for $6M/year, so maybe $7-8M? But Hudson is still the same seemingly fragile player he’s been the last few years and the wrist still seems to be an issue. He made $8M, but $5M was from incentives – read that as Ned’s DL insurance. Maybe a guaranteed $7M+ is too much for an injury-prone 2B that appeared to wear down at the end of the season.
That said, it seems pretty likely that he can get a Sanchez like contract and get out of LA, who he’s unhappy with, so offering Hudson arb doesn’t seem that risky.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
by David Young on Nov 10, 2009 11:01 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
the absolute worst-case scenario (in terms of the Dodgers’ financial risk) is $8-10 million for just one year. But that is assuming he would accept arbitration, which of course is a long shot at this point.
The sad point comes when you look at the options:
1) do nothing. Cost: $0
2) offer Hudson arb; he accepts. Dodgers get a solid player for one year. Cost: $8 million (just a guess)
3) offer Hudson arb; he declines. Dodgers get two draft picks. Cost for bonuses: ~$3-4 million at most
If they don’t offer arb, it will be a shortsighted attempt to save money in the short term, while hurting them long term.

can't you just call Ned and ask him?
by delias man on Nov 10, 2009 11:12 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I’ve seen rumors linking Hudson to the Mets and the Mariners, both of whom have protected picks, so that would be a supplemental and a second. But even low first round and a supplemental would seem to be $2M at most – didn’t Miller and Gould each get just under a million and that was over slot for Gould.
But when your past activities include selling Carlos Santana for $2M ….
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
by David Young on Nov 10, 2009 11:21 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
They’ll offer arbitration, primarily because he won’t sign with them. He was a class guy at the end of the season and didn’t complain, but you know sitting in place of Belliard really ticked him off. Plus, he just barely got his full PA bonus eventhough in early August it looked like a lock.
I, seemingly alone in this crowd, actually think a full season of ODog at 2B is better than any of our other current options. But again, IMHO he won’t sign w/them so it’s a moot argument.

any rumblings on GG for kemp?? it will be a major disspointment if kemp doesnt get some recognition for ANYTHING this year… first no all star game… GG would be cool tho

placido palanco wins the GG this year?????
wow the coaches are horrible at selecting GG winners at second base….
Palanco had the worst range of any 2nd basemen i have seen this year…
and Really orlando hudson?
I think theres this man named chase utley who is getting robbed year after year from his GGs…
last year brandon phillips now o dog robbing the GREAT utley…

Agreed on Utley. He is criminally underrated. His 5 WS homers might propel him into the minds of more people, even though the Phils lost.

and how did torre hunter get the award over...

this guy is the best defensive center fielder in baseball… come on voters….
w.e GGs are bull nowaadays anyway
by matthewmafa on Nov 10, 2009 1:56 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Offense seems to play too big a factor in GG voting. Plus, it’s easier for the managers and coaches to continue writing in the same guys over and over, hence 9 straight for Torii (and Ichiro).
by Eric Stephen on Nov 10, 2009 1:58 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
+100
adam jones won the gg cause he broke out this year…
i have no idea why polonco won… maybe cause he only had 2 errors..
mauer jeter and texiera are all good defenders but their offense is winning them a defensive award.. and ichiro and hunter are pencilied in as you said..
by matthewmafa on Nov 10, 2009 2:06 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The vote was probably based on the low errors for Polanco
Polanco 2009:
Runs saved (per Bill James Online): +2, 14th among MLB 2B
AL Runs saved leaders
Kinsler +24
Zobrist +23
Hill +20
Pedroia +12
But, he did lead in UZR/150: +11.0 (led the 9 AL 2B who qualified)
by Eric Stephen on Nov 10, 2009 2:16 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
polonco leading the al 2nd basemen who quilify in UZR
is another reason why i really dont trust the UZR
by matthewmafa on Nov 10, 2009 2:18 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
How many games did you watch Polanco play? And did you watch every other second baseman play as well, enough times to accurately rate them? I am just wondering; I have my thoughts too, but for the most part it is hard for you, me, or anyone to get an accurate read just by watching a few games here and there.
Also, given that we watch the Dodgers far more than any other team, it is hard to accurately compare to other teams that we don’t watch as much.
by Eric Stephen on Nov 10, 2009 2:27 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah i just remember this horrible sight of polonco in this one game
letting a dp grounder get past him even though he should have gotten it ranging to his Right… but he didnt even get to the ball… it was just a bad thing to see …. but yeah i dont watch enough of him to really say what im saying tho.. it was just one of those wow this guy is old now he cant get the easiest grounder.. even the announcers are like wtf…
by matthewmafa on Nov 10, 2009 2:34 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I get that
Sometimes first impressions play a big role.
The Padres had a 1B from the Mexican League a few years back who almost literally couldn’t catch a ball that wasn’t right to him. If he had to move his glove at all, the ball would get by him. I thought for sure the other infielders would strangle him. :)

Found the player!
Alex Pelaez, who played one game at 1B, in 2002
by Eric Stephen on Nov 10, 2009 2:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
How many games did the managers and coaches of the AL East and West see Polanco play? Probably just the minimal number of games they played the Tigers this year. Is it any wonder the Gold Glove is a joke award at times? It would be a better award if each franchise in the league had one ballot and the teams were force to submit the ballot based on a consensus of their major-league scouts.

Zobrist is a God
just imagine how little you would have had to give up to get him at this point last year. And Aaron Hill, now that is where the offense is at 2nd base. The AL because other then Utley we ain’t go nothing like those four on the list. And this is just offense, amazing they were also so good on defense.
by meercatjohn on Nov 10, 2009 3:40 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Zobrist
Plus, the Rays got him in the Aubrey Huff deal.
by Eric Stephen on Nov 10, 2009 3:43 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I remember the trade
but I have zero recollection of Huff playing for the Stros.
Zobrist hit 27 home runs last year. In 1642 minor league plate appearances he hit 23, yet he had a slug% over .440 just about every year.
by meercatjohn on Nov 10, 2009 4:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
hes like ethier...
ethier was not much of a home run hitter in college or minors either..
but zobrist hit wayyy less home runs..
by matthewmafa on Nov 10, 2009 6:11 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Also, I wonder how much of a fluke those numbers are, considering Zobrist only played a half season at 2B (91 games, 81 starts). Is he really a +46 player on D? Amazing if he’s close.
