Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

We don't much like spreading rumors but this was a quote from Rosenthal during his column today.

Of course the GM

did not man up and was referred to as a rival GM. So that could be anyone. I did like this quote from Ned today.

“We’re not going to move any of ’em just to move ’em,” Colletti said. “But if you end up getting in situations where the talent doesn’t equal the value of the contract, it becomes just like everything else.”
when discussing his arbitration eligible players.

by meercatjohn on Nov 10, 2009 5:37 PM PST reply actions

I wonder if that’s a thinly veiled shot at Martin.

by silverwidow on Nov 10, 2009 5:47 PM PST up reply actions

Repko made $500,000 last year – without hitting any of his incentives – or more than any one of the Dodgers pre-arb players last year. He fits that bill.

by David Young on Nov 10, 2009 6:46 PM PST up reply actions

Was it so thinly veiled?

Unless of course Ned believes in WAR, then he’d be just fine spending 6 million on a catcher with the 13th best OPS+ in the major leagues behind such luminous stars as Miguel Olivo and John Baker.

by Phil Gurnee on Nov 10, 2009 7:22 PM PST up reply actions

Wow

I knew Navarro had also hit the pits but he might have had an historically bad season with that OPS+ of 51. Only seven catchers since 2000 have had an OPS+ below 60 and yes indeed his 51 is the worse this decade for catchers with at least 400 PA in a season. The funny thing is that seven times a catcher has had an OPS+ below 60 and three times it was our own Brad Ausmus.

by Phil Gurnee on Nov 10, 2009 7:24 PM PST up reply actions

To continue

Russell Martin had the 33rd worse season of 37 qualified seasons (400 at bats) for a LA Dodger catchers based on OPS+ only. The good news on that was that Roseborro had the 34 and 35th in 1959 and 1965, both World Championship seasons. Is it any surprise that Jason Phillips was the 36th worse.?

Can anyone guess who had the worse OPS+ season for a catcher in LA Dodger History?

by Phil Gurnee on Nov 10, 2009 7:29 PM PST up reply actions

yes in terms of OPS + is was bad

but in terms of OBP he was great.. and you gotta get on base for yor team to score..

by matthewmafa on Nov 10, 2009 7:36 PM PST up reply actions

like i've been saying all along

there’s no way for him to have any worse of a season this year. hopefully mama’s boy shows up to spring training with out that “J” on his uniform and turns in another all-star season.

Without looking it up, I’ll guess Jeff Torborg.

No

I doubt he ever got 400 at bats in a season.

It would be the guy who

according to Bill James manages the team that year and year out manages to win 5-10 games more then they should every year thus winning the best team efficiency rating every year.

Probably going to do a post on it but according to Bill James they gain 96 bases or 20 runs by being the best baserunning team in baseball even though it is popular in some circles to criticize their aggressive baserunning.

So how many games has Martin been behind the plate since his first day as a starter?
And … who else in MLB has caught more games during this time?

My gut agrees with this. Days off doesn’t mean much, it’s total innings caught that matters. I think the secret to rejuvenating Russell Martin is to find a backup catcher that Torre will feel comfortable making forty starts a season.

Should post a warning with any Rosenthal link

(I mean in big red letters) ;-)

Anyway it seems like the McCourts are a mess but I trust the rest of the staff, including Colletti, right now. The problem would be with spending/budget of course. That’s probably what they mean about “mess.” If anything.

But when you do the math GG est. $6mil + Sherill est. $4 mil = $10 mil.
$10 mil is “Jamie Money?”
Isn’t this the point of the hole mess?
OMG what an owner with real resources could do with the Dodgers at this moment in time.

I did say Rosenthal in the post, so you didn’t go into it blind. Besides it is a quote, you don’t think he’d sink so low as to fake a quote do you?

Rosenthal lives for moments like these.
He really needs to get a one on one with an “unidentified source” with juicy info regarding Jamie … or Frank.
My once proud Dodgers are reduced to this …
But this to will pass.

Fuck It

let there be drama. as long as it stays out of the clubhouse i couldn’t care any less about it. i’m looking at 2010 to be the year of all years. the hollywood ending.

Vinny gets one last championship season to end it all.
Torre, Vinny and Manny get one last championship against their home city of NYC.
Torre gets redemption and proves himself by winning a title with hard work and great coaching, not just a big payroll.
Manny works his ass off and proves he can hit 40 homeruns without cheating.

by bearface on Nov 10, 2009 7:49 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

That would be a great 2010

if Manny can hit 40 home runs as a 38 year old left fielder, I’ll March in the Doo Daa parade in full Manny regalia.

It took me five times

to realize that you didn’t write “doo doo” parade.

40 is a stretch, obviously. but we all know how much manny cares about only manny, and if that means he works his ass off this winter and comes into spring training at 100% then i’ll take it. he’s got a lot to prove if he wants any consideration for the HOF.

by bearface on Nov 11, 2009 5:50 AM PST up reply actions

kenley jansen AFL today!

1 inning 1 hit 2 Ks 0 Walks

94 to 96 MPH 4 seamer mostly 95 or 96

79 to 82 MPH slider which was actually very effective… threw 4 of them and got 2 swinging strikes and 2 called strikes…

Eric Krebs

1 1/3 innings 3 Ks 0 hits 1 walk

93 to 96 MPH fastball with a lot of movement in towards rightys
84 MPH slider
84-85 MPH changeup

if this guy improves his command he would actually be a nice bullpen arm… i thought we got nothing for delwyn young but this guy has some NICE stuff…

Ben Badler of Baseball America was also impressed with KJ:

Dodgers catcher-turned-RHP Kenley Jansen just DOMINATED with a mid-90s FB and a pretty nice CB

is ben badler legit??

or is he one of those onleys and plasckes

Former Catcher

With good location and “feel” might have a short learning curve?
Just what the Dodgers need today.

by 68elcamino427 on Nov 10, 2009 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

My picking Jansen

as my 20th prospect last year is looking better:)

Of course I did think he was going to do it as a catcher because of his arm. The Dodgers could have an interesting bullpen if both Jansen and Travis Jay Schlichting make it since they were both converted position players.

Community help – anyone out there know why Ronald Belisario was suspended by the Marlins for the entirety of 2006?

by Tripon on Nov 10, 2009 9:08 PM PST reply actions

Can’t find a specified reason for the suspension but I found this quote about his tenure with the Bucs to be of interest:

After missing the 2005 season because of Tommy John surgery and the 2006 season because of a suspension he found himself a free agent and toyed with purgatory by signing with the Pirates in 2007. The Pirates didn’t know what to do with him because of his bouts of immaturity, poor conditioning habits and rebellious attitude towards anything representing authority so they cut him loose.
