2nd base Dodger rumors

We all know we have a hole at 2nd base so plenty of rumors coming our way.

1. Alberto Callaspo for AJ Ellis - on the surface that seems quite improbable however according to Plus/Minus Callaspo was the worse fielding 2nd baseman in baseball last year, and evidently AJ Ellis is quite revered for his glove.UZR also had Alberto as a -7 so we might be able to agree that Callaspo had a bad year defensively in 2009. Is that enough to negate an .813 OPS? In 2010 Bill James expects him to regress back to .755 with an wOBA of .333.

2. Kevin Kennedy said he heard the Dodgers are kicking the tires on Uggla. Uggla should be able to maintain his .800 - .825 OPS but again we are talking about a terrible fielding 2nd baseman who is about to get expensive.

3. MLBTR picked the Dodgers as the landing place for Felipe Lopez.  Future offense probably very close to Callaspo but a plus defensively according to UZR in 2009.  However in 2008 he was a negative so his defensive metrics have not been very consistent.

4. Jamie Carrol - surely as a backup and not as the main guy, right?

5. Luis Castillo - swap of bad contracts. He's 34, bad wheels, no power, only skill left is OB. He's what DeJesus would be except DeJesus is 12 years younger and would cost nothing. I'd much rather give away Pierre and eat 1/2 his contract then take on two years of Castillo. But hey, it could be worse.

Add to the list as the winter rumors continue to swirl.

Brandon Phillips

The Reds are shopping him, but he’ll be too expensive for us, and I mean ‘prospects’ expensive.

by Julio Nievas on Nov 11, 2009 10:50 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

not only prospect expensive..

but eric pointed out that his salary is also wayyy too expensive..

by matthewmafa on Nov 11, 2009 10:52 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

2-years/ 17.75 million dollars is expensive??

Nevermind. I will never say the words ‘Brandon Phillips’ ever again.

by Julio Nievas on Nov 11, 2009 11:00 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It is expensive when the club might not offer arb to Hudson for the risk of a one year deal at close to that rate.

by Eric Stephen on Nov 11, 2009 11:03 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I know

i meant that headline as a joke. One of the many flaws in text… No emotion.

by Julio Nievas on Nov 11, 2009 11:05 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

As unlikely as it is

might as well throw Polanco in the “maybe” list. Although he is a Type A.

Also, a Pierre for Luis Castillo swap seems reasonable (even with Castillo’s defensive shortcomings), given the salary neutrality of the deal.

I think 2B in 2010 will end up being some combo of Belliard and DeWitt.

by Eric Stephen on Nov 11, 2009 10:58 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

is felipe lopez a Type A or B

if hes a Type B and only wants a 2 year deal less or about 10 to 12 million i think he would be the Best option…

Furcal
Lopez
Ethier
Kemp
Ramirez
Loney
Blake
Martin
Pitcher

that would be a nice lineup espeiclaly considering felipe lopez OBP last year was .383.. he would be perfect guy in front of ethier to get on base.. and hes a switch hitter with plus defense…

by matthewmafa on Nov 11, 2009 10:58 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

2/$12 sounds about right, but I doubt the Dodgers would offer that much.

by Eric Stephen on Nov 11, 2009 11:41 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Freddy Sanchez just signed for 2/12 and is a similar player, a slightly better hitter, but slightly older. I’d guess 2/12 is about a top offer for Lopez, especially since there are some other 2Bs out there.

We don't want to deal with FLA

They will try to fleece us for Uggla (Withrow plus others).

Forget it.

by silverwidow on Nov 11, 2009 11:17 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

HanRam on the other hand...

They can pick any 5 minor leaguers they want.

Furcal (2B)
Ethier
HanRam
Manny
Kemp
Loney
Blake
Martin

World title.

for hermida they got 2 relief prospects

one is a loogy at best and the other was not even in the top 75 for the red sox system…

can they really ask for that much for uggla?

by matthewmafa on Nov 11, 2009 11:33 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Polanco or Phillips

are my favorite rumored options. I still think there’s a way the Dodgers could make BP work, though I’d fear what prospects they’d have to give up for him. But I don’t even think him that expensive, given he’s younger than ODog and yet the latter will be asking for similar contract in length and expense. Lopez would be okay too.

Say no to Callaspo.

Uggla would be a fantastic… DH.

Obviously Joe Torre Knows More Than I Do

But to me it looks like we could have a guy who hit .283, won a gold glove, and was an all-star this year in O-Dog. The fans love him, his teammates seem to love him. It’s too bad that Torre doesn’t, because I would love for him to be back on the team.

by bearface on Nov 11, 2009 11:56 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

yes, yes, yes.

I’ve never understood the disliking of Hudson by Torre. Maybe he pooped in his desk droor?

That rug really tied the room together...

Dammit Ian,

If you want a job, you better move out of the State of California, because they are idiots who run the state and I am frustrated! I just want a librarian job after I spent all the time and money to get this goddamn degree and there is nothing! This recession sucks and I need a job. There I said it!

Another option

although from Jon Heyman so take with a grain of salt:

mark derosa already has received calls from #yankees, #mariners, #nats, #dodgers, #phils, #rangers, #orioles, #giants

dodgers 2nd base option rankings..

1. felipe lopez… i would love that .383 OBP in front of ethier and kemp to offset furcal and his .330 OBP
2. Brandon Phillips. If we can trade for him it would be great. hes an all star..
3. Dan Uggla- would give us 4 potential 30 home run hitters in our lineup wth kemp manny ethier and him..
4. In house/Belliard Platoon.. Dewitt plays against RHP and belliard plays against LHP.. im not very high on dewitt after that year in AAA tho
5. Callaspo- Doesnt strike out much and would be James loney 2.0 with his dependability to put the ball in play and drive in some runs..
6 Polonco- worst possible senario for me… aging second basemen with a .330 OBP.. does strike out but doesnt walk at all either and has no power.. hes basically furcal on 2nd base and he scares me with his age and defense..

by matthewmafa on Nov 11, 2009 1:01 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Good list

I looked up the Bill James projections for 2010 on each one (since that is the only 2010 projection system out yet). This is only for hitting, of course:

1) Lopez – .281/.352/.400
2) Phillips – .269/.322/.434
3) Uggla – .252/.345/.470
4) Belliard – .265/.322/.416 (no prediction for DeWitt)
5) Callaspo – .287/.345/.410
6) Polanco – .296/.343/.403

7) Hudson – .280/.353/.409

o shit!!!

i totally forgot about orlando hudson… but for me i think theres no way he will be back unless 1. the dodgers offer arb.. 25 percent chance the dodgers offer… 2. he accepts 50/50 chance

by matthewmafa on Nov 11, 2009 1:25 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not much differentiating

any of them.

I think that is why I had no problem with DeWitt being the 2nd baseman last year. That is about what I’d expect him to hit.

I would to go in house with DeJesus when he’s ready (mid-season?).

by silverwidow on Nov 11, 2009 1:24 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Plus Polanco is Type-A, so that would cost LA their (very late) first-round pick.

If DeJesus had played this year

his projections would be 280/370/370. JMO

by meercatjohn on Nov 11, 2009 1:25 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

doubt his OBP would be that high...

.340- .350 would seem more reasonable..

by matthewmafa on Nov 11, 2009 1:27 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

He is a walk machine. Great 2B defense.

by silverwidow on Nov 11, 2009 1:27 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

he will get walked in the minors..

major leaguers will see he has no power or very little and give him fastball after fastball down the middle… thats why i think he will not walk very much in his first year or first few until he proves he can smash the ball

by matthewmafa on Nov 11, 2009 1:32 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

DeJesus will hit plenty of doubles if they keep throwing fastballs down the middle.

by silverwidow on Nov 11, 2009 1:34 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That seems about right

in 2008, his MLE while playing in Jacksonville was .273/.348/.347. Very solid from a 21-year old.

He could put up Elvis Andrus numbers in the majors right now with plus defense. I’ll take it.

by silverwidow on Nov 11, 2009 1:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

elvis andrus offense

is a big time product of his home ball park…

home .298 .366 .425 .791

away .238 .294 .325 .620

but his D is great..

by matthewmafa on Nov 11, 2009 1:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Andrus' neutralized batting

I don’t think it is out of line to expect DeJesus, if healthy, to match that.

by Eric Stephen on Nov 11, 2009 1:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I was irritated before that we trade Abreu and now I’m really irritated that we are looking at 2nd base options that at best might equal his production and we will probably be paying millions for it.

by meercatjohn on Nov 11, 2009 1:29 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Look on the bright side

Management obviously prefers DeJesus. He will be added to the 40-man in a week or so (guaranteed invite to big league camp) and should impress everyone.

by silverwidow on Nov 11, 2009 1:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

and we will probably be paying millions for it

Millions of nickles?

by Cool Dudes on Nov 11, 2009 1:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Uhm

why not trade our entire minor league system for those two?

Seriously, a bona fide ace and a 27 yr old 2b who plays possibly the best D in the league and hit 36 home runs last year.

by Seanny Rotten on Nov 13, 2009 8:07 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

If the TIgers

need to move Jackson for financial reasons, the Yankee’s are only signing their own FA, the Mets have no money, who the hell is going to be signing these guys? I expect an ever colder winter this year then last year for free agents. Abreu was smart to sign early like Ibanez. So was Sanchez.

by meercatjohn on Nov 11, 2009 1:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

Which perhaps makes Lopez the best possible option. Not wild about trading for a 2B unless the cost is basically nil.

by LA Taco on Nov 11, 2009 2:13 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Dewitt. . .

. . . is cheap, and not that much of a falloff from any of the guys listed in this thread. That’s why the Dodgers will put him at 2B. If there’s any money at all, and I’m not sure there will be, I’d much rather see the team spend it on pitching than on a marginal improvement at 2B.

I loved Orlando Hudson at 2B in 2009. I wish Joe Torre did.

+1

O-Dog’s pinch hit home run in game 5 was a nice symbolic gesture (sadly, nothing more), but Torre not even leaving him in the game after that was an even bigger gesture.

I hope the Dodgers at least offer him arbitration, so we can get a draft pick. And I’d really like to see if DeWitt will be good enough to join the rest of the young guys as a force to be reckoned with for years (hopefully with the Dodgers).

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, general manager Omar Minaya has spoken with the Dodgers about Luis Castillo.
Minaya said that a few teams have shown interest in Castillo, which would have been unthinkable last winter. The Mets are in a better place this fall after Castillo batted .302/.387/.346 in 2009. The 34-year-old second baseman still has two years and $12 million left on his contract. Juan Pierre, who is slated to make $18.5 million over the next two seasons, would be a comparable swap.
