Awesome
I think I’ll have to take a trip out to AZ this spring. I went once in college (to AZ so no Dodgers there) and had a blast. True Blue outing?

Hope so
That March 25-27 block looks inviting. Sweet 16 / Elite 8 is also that weekend (on TV though, not in Glendale like last year)

Inviting yes
Busy as hell? You bet including the other spring training games around the greater Phoenix area and including Wrestlemania 26 that weekend. Looks like a nice ST area though.

I went last year, Camelback is beautiful. Nicest non MLB stadium I’ve ever seen (although I haven’t seen many). Definitely the jewel of the AZ Spring training facilities.
The whole scene is just awesome if you love baseball.

Are the 11th, 20th and 22nd signs of things to come?
Or is it the fact that the Dodgers relationship to older people the signs of things to come?

Not sure your point
but split squad games have been played for ages.
by Eric Stephen on Nov 12, 2009 9:24 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Fail
1. Split squad may for the 1st time be literal: Jamie vs. Frank (Do they get to pick like in the playground, I take Kemp, OK, I’ll take Manny, How do they decide who get’s first pick? Lawyer dance off?).
2. Dodger’s free agent signings will be players who should have already retired in Arizona.

Make the joke clearer next time. I had no idea what you were talking about either.

But I want it to happen

Hm. Firing Dunleavy wouldn’t hurt I guess. Although, I’m mostly inclined to agree with Steve Perrin that the problems to date are not really Dunleavy’s fault. I’ve never had a problem with his offensive schemes, the thing that bothers me the most is his baffling subsitution and player management decisions.
But ya, its definitely not going to happen, so I’ve kind of accepted Dunleavy as a constant (much like Sterling.) I’ve watched every game this year, I can’t really fault Dunleavy all that much. It’s not like he’s the guy missing free throws or wide open looks. Kaman is playing out of his mind (in Dunleavy’s offense) and losing an elite player like Gordon would hurt any team. I know the injury excuse is old, but its hard for a Clipper team to absorb the losses of Gordon and Griffin and just keep humming along.
by Michael White on Nov 12, 2009 10:34 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree. Coach looks helpless at times with all of the mental errors on the court. The end of the PHX game was the killer to me. Kaman Gordon rotate to same guy and leave Barbosa open in corner, then next possession Nash abuses Davis and clips lose. They needed to get out hot with all of these home games. The yearly 3 week road trip due to the Grammys is going to hurt later.
by delias man on Nov 12, 2009 10:41 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The Clippers were 15/27 from the charity stripe that game. They should have won that game going away. Its frustrating and not exactly a problem you can pin on the coach.
by Michael White on Nov 12, 2009 10:53 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you on the subs and player management decisions. To me, it just seems that at times, when the game is close, Dunleavy doesn’t know how to win (player management). What drilled me last night was Steve Novak, after that I jumped on the “Fire Dunleavy” bandwagon.

for some odd reason
I used to pretend to be byron scott when i was playing basketball in the backyard as a kid, I never really watched him in his prime, but always liked him. Oh well, I bet he winds up on another coaching staff somewhere

MLBTR says Dodgers talked with Jamey Carroll
I do not endorse this. Creepy looking guy.

For me, the only pro of this move would be making Bob Dylan “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” references all year long.

For $1 million or so, he wouldn’t be so bad. .273/.351/.350 career hitter; .355 OBP each of the last two seasons.
Take these with a grain of salt (some small sample sizes), but here are his ± numbers from 2004-present:
2B: 10 career (6 in 2009) in 3145.2 innings
3B: 10 career (3 in 2009) in 580 innings
SS: -1 career (hasn’t played since 2007) in 419 innings
LF: 1 career (1 in 2009) in 44 innings
CF: 0 career (played all of one inning in 2007) in 1 inning
RF: +1 career (1 in 2009) in 45 innings
Decent OBP guy, can play multiple positions without falling on his face. There’s definitely value in that.
by Eric Stephen on Nov 12, 2009 11:44 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Good baserunner
outside of stealing bases (41 SB, 26 CS career).
Per Bill James, here are his numbers for baserunning gain (non steals, compared to average):
2004: +5
2005: +7
2006: +6
2007: +1
2008: +21
2009: +6

BR Gain defined
BR Gain (or Loss if a negative number) is the total of all the types of extra baserunning advances minus the (triple) penalty for all the BR Outs compared with what would be expected based on the MLB averages. Zero is average. Plus numbers are above average and negative numbers are below average

I might consider using those names to make LA sports ownership jokes all year long. Someone at DT suggested that Frank McCourt should avoid swimming in the ocean while this ownership/divorce battle is going on.

That is brutal
So Frank swims, Jamie gets the team, the Cards move to Az (can Phoenix support 2 teams?) and Jamie moves the team to StLou after signing a parade of pretty boy washed up players.

Per Diamond Leung
Mitch Webster is leaving the Dodgers to become a scouting supervisor with the Royals. Webster was a pro scout for the past two seasons, but is better known for his work as an amateur scout. He signed 2004 first-round picks Blake DeWitt and Scott Elbert out of Missouri.

Maybe he sided with George Genovese. Or maybe Logan White offered him a pay cut also.

Pierre-for-Castillo rumors
These rumors might have legs this time. We’d pay Castillo $7.625M in 2010-11 by splitting the difference in their contracts. Not a bad deal to me.
by silverwidow on Nov 12, 2009 1:22 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Just to clarify, Castillo would only get $6M, but it would be like paying him extra to dump Pierre’s contract.

I heard it from a guy who spoke to a Mets’ season ticket holder’s girlfriend.
OK, not really.

I like the first one :)
I could easily talk myself into that deal.

Yep
This is probably the leader among the cost-neutral 2B options though
by Eric Stephen on Nov 12, 2009 2:17 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Castillo's defense pretty much is dead last among 2B though.
He’d just be the new Juan Pierre after July.
by Tripon on Nov 12, 2009 2:18 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, it's not ideal
but he also is good for a .370-ish OBP, albeit with no power.
MIght not be the option, but it is certainly an option.

what PH will the DS crowd ridiculously cheer for?

Chris (San Fran, CA)
Keith, last night on ESPN you said Rafael Furcal deserved the gold glove more than Jimmy Rollins. Furcal had 20 errors and Rollins 6. What’s your rationalization here?
Klaw
(1:15 PM)
I am seriously hoping this is an attempt at klawbait, because it’s 2009, and if you’re judging fielders by their error totals, I’m not sure how you figured out how to turn the computer on.

Keith, would Billingsley, Dewitt, Gordon, and Hu/Dejesus get Halladay to LA?

No.

Law things Toronto would turn that deal down?
A deal that Ned would be insane for even offering…
by Michael White on Nov 12, 2009 2:33 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Hu/Dejesus can be viewed as 2nd baseman, but so could DeWitt.
by uclatroy on Nov 12, 2009 2:39 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but they have Aaron Hill. Doesn’t make sense.
To get Halladay, the Dodgers would have to give up Bills and more than one elite minor league starter.
by silverwidow on Nov 12, 2009 2:40 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The BlueJays need a SS.
And yeah, If I’m the Blue Jays, I’d make sure WIthrow, or Martin was in the deal.
by Tripon on Nov 12, 2009 2:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Do you think the Dodgers would part with Withrow/Martin AND Billingsley?
I sure don’t.
by Michael White on Nov 12, 2009 2:48 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
No,but the Blue Jays better demand it.
The Indians trade with Lee was just damn stupid on the Indians parts, and the Blue Jays better get value for Halladay.
by Tripon on Nov 12, 2009 2:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
But that's where I'm confused
why would they demand something, that they won’t get?
If they demand that, and the Dodgers say no, they either don’t complete the trade (not a good outcome for them) or they buckle and take less than that later (not a good outcome for them.)
This is of course predicated on the logic that the Blue Jays do in fact want to move Halladay. If they do, then great, we can work out a realistic deal. If not and they are just looking to be “wowed” as they said last year, then can keep him, no worries from my end.
by Michael White on Nov 12, 2009 2:56 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
No, but the value of Halladay would demand at least one high end prospect.
If I’m the Blue Jays, I’d start my making sure its built around Gordon and Withrow, and then work from there. If the Dodgers wanted to sub Billingsley for one of the two for some dumb reason, let them, but I need some talent back.

The Blue Jays are rumored to be considering trading Overbay and moving Aaron Hill to first base. Not that there is much of a market out there for Overbay…
