FYI, this weekend MLB Network will air a block of All-Time Games highlighting high-strikeout games and featuring one that we have not aired before: Ramon Martinez’s 18-strikeout performance for the Dodgers vs. the Braves in 1990, airing at 3:30PM ET on Saturday, November 14.
Other games included in the block of All-Time Games this weekend are Ron Guidry’s 18 strikeouts for the Yankees against the California Angels in 1978; Roger Clemens’ 20 strikeouts for the Red Sox against the Mariners in 1986; David Cone’s 19-strikeout game for the Mets vs. the Phillies in 1991; Ben Sheets’ 18 strikeouts for the Brewers vs. the Braves in 2004; and Randy Johnson’s 20 strikeouts for the Diamondbacks against the Reds in 1997.

With 2 outs in the 8th, Ramon had given up just 2 hits and 0 walks, and already had his 18th strikeout! The next batters due were:
8) Gregg Olson C
9) Tommy Gregg PH
1) Oddibe McDowell CF
2) Jeff Treadway 2B
He didn’t get another strikeout, and allowed another hit and a walk, but Ramon was ohhhh so close to the record.
20 strikeout games
through 7.2 innings:
Clemens 1996 – 19!!
Clemens 1986 – 18
Wood – 17
Unit – 17 (game went extras, but he had 20 K in 9 IP)

Your earlier comment about Gregg Zaun has given you superfluous G on the brain. The extra-G Olson was the pitcher, not the catcher. The only other double-G first name Gregg in the majors was Jefferies.

Gregg Jeffries was a can’t miss who missed. I still remember the talk of him swinging a bat under water to improve his bat speed.

Sorta missed
Couldn’t live up to the hype or stick at 2B, where his bat would have played. A few good seasons with the bat though.
The can’t miss I remember most is SI cover boy Clint Hurdle: “This Year’s Phenom”.

My favorite Ramon game was a 2 hitter against the D-backs 11 years ago in Phoenix. He gave up a hit to the first batter, then retired the next 24 batters in a row before giving up a HR to start the 9th. I was there, w/my soon-to-be 5 year old son. Awesome game.

For awhile I had blotted out all memories of Juan Samuel, Dodger.

I remember being fascinated by his “accomplishment” as a rookie to get 701 AB; that always stuck with me for some reason.
Also, I remember really liking him and thinking he was great because of his four straight double digit 2B/3B/HR seasons.

Juan Samuel was the first baseball player I didn't like
mostly because my grandmother taught me that he was a “bum”

Your grandmother was wise. :)
I rather enjoyed watching the 1988 Dodgers with my grandma, who liked to keep score of games (sort of) on a steno notepad. I don’t specifically remember her favorites or least favorites from that era though.

Her favorite was me. Her least favorite was your other brother.

How skinny will 22-year old Ramon look on that broadcast?

The summer after seventh grade (I think)
my family took a trip up to Seattle. we went to a Mariners/Chi Sox game and I got to watch Johnson throw 19 K’s. it was pretty amazing.
Summer after 8th grade, I guess

crazy the power in that game – Griffey, A-Rod, Egdar Martinez, Belle, Thomas…
I saw Indians @ RedSox, Clemens vs. Swindell in April 1991. Both were in their prime.
Clemens threw a 3-hitter (I remembered it as a 2-hitter) and the Sox won 4 zip. First time at Fenway. Great red-hots, they carded me buying a beer, and i had to step over a passed out fan (and his vomit) getting to the aisle to exit after the game. Great fans, those Sox dudes!

This is going to be exciting tomorrow
I have never seen that game. I hope Vin is on the feed. Ramon was my favorite player at that time. I had a Nike “Hot Sauce” poster up in my room.
Any mention of Ramon Martinez
requires the reading of this excellent piece by Eric Enders, who wrote about his favorite player back in 2001.
Here is the complete list of arbitration eligible players, in case anyone wants to peek at some non-tender candidates.
