Dodgers Have 34 Minor League Free Agents
Baseball America has released the full list of 536 minor league free agents, including an MLB-leading 34 from the Dodgers.
Included among the Dodgers' minor league free agents are once heralded and oft-injured pitcher Greg Miller, the Ragin' Cajun Danny Ardoin, and Korean veteran pitcher Hyang-Nam Choi, who struck out 12 batters per nine innings with Albuqerque in 2009. Choi will be 39 in 2010.

Some old friends among the MiLB FA
Joel “The Destroyer” Guzman
Antonio Perez
Brian Myrow
Victor Diaz
Jolbert Cabrera
Travis “Sweeney Bait” Denker
John Lindsey
Reggie Abercrombie
Eric Kanaby
Eric Hull
Mike Koplove
Also
Vinny Rottino, the player acquired from the Brewers for Cluadio Vargas (really, just to clear a 40-man spot at the time), is among the Dodgers’ minor league FA as well
From Eric’s comment in the other thread:
“… including CanuckDodger would-be-40-man Francisco Felix”. Hmmmmm.

The Dodgers can still sign Felix to a split contract, then purchase it by Friday.

My bad
They wouldn’t have to “purchase” the contract by Friday…just re-sign him and add him to the 40-man by then
by Eric Stephen on Nov 17, 2009 1:48 PM PST up reply actions
If any team was actually eyeing him as a potential Rule 5 draftee, isn’t it better to simply sign him now to a split contract themselves. That’s commits him to their 40-man, but not the 25-man.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
He is not eligible for the Rule 5 draft anymore

Please clarify
Is Felix contractually obligated to accept a split contract from the Dodgers? Or can he sign with anyone?
He is free to sign with any team, as are all 536 minor league FA

Do they have to be signed to split contracts, or can it be simply a minor-league contract?
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
it can be a minor league deal, but would be after Friday. Actually I wonder if he would be subject to the Rule 5 draft anyway if he signed a minor league deal in the next 3 days (don’t know)

Me too, if only so I could see the rarity of Silverwidow rooting for someone older than 27 :)

I don't think Felix will make the roster afterall
DeJesus, Robinson, Guerra, Van Slyke, Jansen (95 mph!) are your entrants!

Why Tommy Lasorda is awesome
he is on Twitter, and it is a verified account. He posted a picture of him speaking at an LA Times luncheon at Dodger Stadium, with this great caption:
I just spoke at a luncheon hosted by the LA Times, which means I’ve done more for the Times in one hour than Plaschke has all year
Awesome
I was just about to post that one!
I guess that’s a reference to a nice, clean butcher shop chicken rather than some dirty, skanky bird from a random backyard “ranch”. But who knows?
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Lasorda is the gift that keeps on giving
This pic itself is hilarious, but the caption takes it to another level:

This one is great,
I am from Murrieta :(
And it looks like he is getting ready for a throw down with Bevacqua.
I got 24 hits on a google search for “cleaner than a Safeway chicken” (in quotes). One was for a story within a book published in 2006. One from some website purportedly written in 2001. Thirteen were directly related to the tweet. No clues to an origin though.

From Dylan Hernandez
http://twitter.com/dylanohernandez/status/5809331148
Dodgers have inquired about Mark DeRosa and John Smoltz, according to their agent, Keith Grunewald
DeRosa is a definite “Ned Guy.” I wouldn’t be opposed to the signing if the terms were short.
Smoltz probably isn’t interested in coming here.
DeRosa parlayed one decent semi full-time season of 108 OPS+ into a 3-year, $13m contract for his age 32-34 seasons.
Over the last three seasons, he has played more, and put up a 106 OPS+. Factor in a different market, plus his advanced age, and I don’t think he gets a bigger contract this time around. Probably something like 2/$7m or something, which wouldn’t necessarily be the worst thing in the world (even though he’s not the best fielder at either 2B & 3B).
by Eric Stephen on Nov 17, 2009 3:14 PM PST up reply actions
I think we will sign DeRosa, Pedro (1 yr, 6M base with escalators that would bring it to 10M), Carroll, and a veteran backup catcher.
Sound good?
I would support that plan, although I don’t think the Dodgers would guarantee $6m to Pedro.
I think Wolf gets re-signed eventually
by Eric Stephen on Nov 17, 2009 3:23 PM PST up reply actions
Well, Ned likes him. I doubt he gives the job to DeWitt and Belliard probably isn’t an everyday player.
already re-signed to an extension through 2011 with Seattle! :)

Presumably he would be at 2B though, most of the time. I fear for the defense though.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Now that I think about it, I’m not enamored of a 35-year old journeyman as our starting 2B. Blech.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Also, one that only played 2 innings at 2B in 2009

his best role would be “better Mark Loretta” :)
by Eric Stephen on Nov 17, 2009 3:32 PM PST up reply actions
Stats don’t matter for Loretta. All that matters is October 8, 2009 at about 6:00 P.M.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
plus DeRosa had that awful throw (aka worse than Utley in the NLCS) in the NLDS Game 1.
DeRosa’s 2010 role is to go to a team that the Dodgers will sweep in the NLDS. Again.
by Eric Stephen on Nov 17, 2009 3:39 PM PST up reply actions
while that was sweet...and I was there and loved it and thought at the time it would propel us a long way
it is time to move on towards 2010 and ML’s stats from 2009 309/276/585 (OPS+ of 60) at age 37 cry out for a younger less expensive upgrade.
by MammothDodger on Nov 17, 2009 10:32 PM PST up reply actions
Oh, what I really meant was given that the Dodgers led the NL in wins anyway, it was worth putting up with Loretta’s suckitude in 2009 for that one moment in NLDS Game 2. Definitely need a better option for 2010. I wonder if DeRosa is ready to accept being the full-time bench guy.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
by David Young on Nov 18, 2009 12:26 PM PST up reply actions
not a fan either. The 2B options are pretty thin all around. Who would you like best? DeRosa is too expensive for a bench bat but ideally he’d be good in that role.
I dunno.
Given the Dodgers’ history when in need of a 2B, Ned will trade for one in exchange for Withrow.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

Exactly
we all know Withrow will be traded for Halladay instead :)
by Eric Stephen on Nov 17, 2009 3:48 PM PST up reply actions
also, add in a LHB off the bench too.
I guess DeWitt could fill that role, but just how many 2B/3B types will we have on the roster?!? :)

Saw the following on the LA Times Sports letters page. Sounds like a pretty good idea.
My 11-year-old son Jacob just told me what he wants for the holidays this year. He asked me for about 100 blank DVDs. “What in the world are you planning to do with them,” I asked. “I want to record every televised game Vin Scully calls next season and keep them forever,” he said.

More DeRosa news
Todd Zolecki, Phillies beat writer for MLB.com, reported this:
“Mark underwent successful surgery on his left wrist,” Dr. Gary Lourie said in a statement released late last month. “The procedure was completed with no complications, and I expect Mark to resume full baseball activities well before baseball season begins.”
Do we go to the well with another 2B with wrist issues? Especially one who only played 2 innings at the position in 2009?
And forfeiting the draft pick saves hundreds of thousands of dollars to boot.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Detroit is under cost cutting moves themselves. They didn’t offer arbitration to Edgar Renteria last year, and they probably won’t for Polanco.
Interesting point. Part of why speculation now is wild by definition. Guess we have to wait until the deadline to offer arb passes.
