I Want the Series Over Tonight

But odds are it goes on (or maybe not where is the sim?)

Well, I’ll just have to go with the fact that the Yanks have too much heart and veteran leadership for the gritty Phillies to overcome a 3-1 deficit.

The sooner this is over with, the sooner this post-season is in the past, the closer we are to opening day next year, the better.

How’s the weather?

by Cool Dudes on Nov 2, 2009 4:57 PM PST reply actions

Yanks have heart?

i never understood this. they have no more heart than any other team. they just have a $200 million payroll which means at any point in the game one of their all-stars can get hot.

But what’s going on down on the farm? Seeing alot of guys coming up with great stuff and shitty command. Logan likes these guys figuring they will learn to throw strikes in the minors, but then they don’t.

Yeah

This is more of a case where the right decision didn’t work, similar to Kuroda going in game 3.

by uclatroy on Nov 2, 2009 5:24 PM PST up reply actions

or at least hasn’t thus far.

by uclatroy on Nov 2, 2009 5:25 PM PST up reply actions

That wasn't the right decision. The right decision was

Bills 1, Kershaw 2, Wolf 3, Padilla 4 and if needed Bills 5, Kershaw 6 and Wolf to close it out.

Bills was still a good pitcher, his FIP was crazy good (better than Wolf’s) and Kershaw was too young to start a game 1, in my opinion.

by Seanny Rotten on Nov 2, 2009 6:29 PM PST up reply actions

Agree

I thought it was a mistake not to start Lee last night, and also to start Burnett tonight. Yanks have house money, use it. Burnett and Pettite at home on near full rest vs the ass end of the Phils rotation is nothing to sneeze at.

by Capt Obvious on Nov 2, 2009 5:32 PM PST up reply actions

There’s no way they’d throw Pettite in game 7 over Sabathia, which I’d assume is the main reason why they are using Burnett and Pettite on short rest as well.

by uclatroy on Nov 2, 2009 5:34 PM PST up reply actions

True

but it probably wouldn’t get to 7. If it did, yeah they’d go CC.

by Capt Obvious on Nov 2, 2009 5:38 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

I would not have started Burnett tonight.

by shaqfor3 on Nov 2, 2009 6:10 PM PST reply actions

Maybe Lee on short rest would have gotten hammered. Hasn’t history shown that since baseball moved to the five man rotation starting a pitcher in the postseason on three days rest has not gone very well?

The Phillies almost had a 2 – 2 series with Lee going against Burnett, one rested, one not. I’m going to go contrary and liked what Manuel did. Blanton did his job against that offense in that park, the Phillie hitters didn’t.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Nov 2, 2009 6:11 PM PST reply actions

I can agree with you for the most part. I think there’s a small set of pitchers that can be effective on short rest and the manager has got to recognize who they are. CC is apparently part horse and can be effective that way – he’s done it before. But Burnett, not so sure. An aging Pettitte, not so sure.

Every manager's worst nightmare (seemingly)

is getting the backup catcher injured. It has been the rationale used for not PH catchers, or to carry 3 catchers.

by Eric Stephen on Nov 2, 2009 6:46 PM PST up reply actions

Not that I want non-Victorinos to get hurt

but I would like to see whom is the Yankees’ emergency catcher tonight.

If Posada is significantly injured, they can replace him on the roster with Cerevelli, but of course that wouldn’t help tonight.

yeah like if he does something where he needs to get out for the rest of the game..

like a flu or some kind of small injury…

who would catch??

maybe nick swisher? jeter is so great he can probably catch too right

If Manuel wouldn’t start Lee on 3 days rest, he won’t start on 2 days rest either.

More likely is that Pedro goes in 6, Hamels in 7, with Lee available for 2 IP or so in Game 7 in relief (a la Randy Johnson 2001)

1910 World Series: Coombs & the A’s faced the Cubs

Game 2, October 18: 9 IP for Coombs
Game 3, October 20: 9 IP for Coombs (on one day rest!!!!)
Game 5, October 23: 9 IP for Coombs (on only two days rest!)

6 days, 3 starts, 27 innings, 3 wins

From a yahoo! sports article on Phil Coke of the Yankees, who makes about the MLB minimum.

A-Rod bought him two suits. He did the same for all the rookies. “Pretty cool,” Coke said. Even now, Coke said, when he goes out to dinner with more well-heeled teammates, someone else usually picks up the tab. “They do it secretly, too,” he said. “I still don’t know who bought me dinner the last time we were in Seattle.”
I suppose that is pretty cool. Maybe that makes the rookie hazing worth it.

A guy like Coke is going to really enjoy getting his post-season share money.

Planned shut down

From Bill Mitchell at Baseball America:

The Dodgers shut down lefthahnder Aaron Miller as planned after three appearances in which the 2009 supplemental first-round pick yielded only one run in 4 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers shut down lefthahnder Aaron Miller as planned after three appearances in which the 2009 supplemental first-round pick yielded only one run in 4 1/3 innings. In his brief stint, the Baylor product drew raves from many in the scout section at his games. One scout in particular wondered aloud how Miller had gotten past the first round before being selected with the 36th overall pick.
