Boras: Manny To Return
Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times brings the news that, as reported last week, Manny Ramirez will exercise his $20 million option, and return to the Dodgers, according to his agent, Scott Boras.

“Obviously, he enjoys L.A.,” Boras said. “If he went into the marketplace, the real negative was that he could end up playing in a place he wasn’t comfortable playing.”
Um, yeah. That, and the marketplace wouldn’t pay him close to $20 million (or whatever the NPV is of his deferred contract…$18-19m or so)
I usually feel pretty safe once its posted on Dodgers.com
Same article mentions that Gurnick believes the Dodgers are interested in re-upping Padilla, Weaver and Ausmus.
He’s backed off to just Padilla and Ausmus. Then there’s this:
Padilla is looking for a multiyear contract, something the Dodgers have shied away from for free-agent pitchers in recent years. Was Brett Tomko the last mediocre pitched Ned signed to more than one year? I would definitely have no interest in Padilla for more than one year, and even then it would have to be at a very reasonable price, maybe $3M with incentives tied to games started to get it to $6M. Call the incentives “you suck and had to be pulled from the rotation” insurance.

And as Phil has pointed out before, if a risk on a pitcher is going to be taken, I’d rather see a one-year Ned special shot at a Rich Harden, Eric Bedard, or Ben Sheets, guys with a lot more upside than Padilla.

Ooh I really don't think
Ned is sharp enough to pull off a one-year Ned special on a pitcher.
Why not a 2 yr w/ an option a la Manny on Sheets? That guy when healthy can flat out pitch.

Kuroda?
Perhaps mediocre is a bit harsh. But another injury plagued year next year, and that contract will have been an overall miss (IMO.)

jason shmidt?
and i agree.. if kuroda is once again injured next year.. it would have been a bad deal but if he has a good season it wouldnt be a bad contract..
Well
I guess if I’m penalizing Kuroda for being injured I might as well say it about Schmidt too. Schmidt was excellent though, the year before joining the Dodgers. I was definitely in favor of the signing at the time, didn’t know he was injured though…

Buyer Beware!
Any team that transacts with Boras does so with their eyes wide open and at their own risk.
The overall results for the Dodgers in dealing with this character are not a net positive, rather very costly.
It might be more fun to take bags of money out into the parking lot and light it on fire rather than give it to this man and the people he represents.
What's the consensus on our arb offers?
Wolf and Belliard only?
I’m figuring Ned will offer it to guys who he would like back AND at a reasonable cost. The two above fit the bill.
Hudson is too much of risk, but it sucks to lose out on Type A compensation.
Wolf, Hudson and maybe Belliard
I think the risk is overplayed. Hudson coming back wouldn’t be the end of the world and he most likely wouldn’t accept anyway.
Thanks a pantload, Ned.

and now this: Five notable hitting projections from the Bill James 2010 handbook
According to his website, Bell has "enchanted audiences worldwide with his breathtaking virtuosity and tone of rare beauty" for more than two decades. Apparently, he’s turned his attention to baseball as of late. Bell was acquired by Baltimore from Los Angeles (N) in the George Sherrill trade. He posted a wOBA of .397 in Double-A last year. He’s currently slashing .320/.404/.500 in the Arizona Fall League.BTW, how late to the party am I? I had no idea he was a violin virtuoso.
I wonder if I’ll feel as sick watching Santana in Cleveland while Martin continues to struggle at the bat and Bell tear it up in Baltimore with Blake ungracefully age as I do when I see Edwin Jackson pitch really damned well in Detroit. Of course, who am I kidding – Bell’s in Baltimore’s system, Bell has a better chance playing anywhere else than Baltimore.
It truly is time to fork stab Ned (again).
D'oh!
he isn’t a violin virtuoso. Gullibility defense BROKEN!!
