Dodgers Announce Darren Dreifort Signing at $3m discount

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced today that they will re-sign Darren Dreifort to nearly the same contract he signed before the 2001 season, this one paying him $52,079,999 over 5 years.  When asked how he could manage such a move given the tight payroll constraints from the McCourts, Ned Colletti responded, "Well all the players receiving deferred money kind of felt sorry for Drei, and figured that since they're due some money when they aren't playing baseball, they would be generous and put that money towards giving Dreifort a chance to play."

"It's a great win for the club, too.  If Dreifort throws an inning, then the club actually gets something for all that money over the course of the next five years."

What a ridiculous signing, now we can’t afford to sign Schmidt to an extension?

If we yield now, all is over; but if we fight, there is yet a hope that we may stand upright

Why Ned still has his job is amazing. Some trades he did were pretty good, but… damn.. 5 years…

“5 years…”

What are you referring to?

Hilarious

Nice perspective on the deferred money and buy outs to compare it Dreifort’s contract; brilliant.

Not that funny when you consider that these deals have effectively hamstrung the team for the next few years …

and IMO, its just another reason that the McCourts should be selling out sooner than later

It's funny

but sad all at the same time.

I'm gonna let you finish...

But Vernon Wells had the worst contract of all-time.

It compounds the problems

The idea that these wasted signings not only hurt us while they were on the roster, but will continue to be a drag on the team long after they are done playing is a disgrace. It was one thing to buy the team on credit, it seems the McCourts took the same approach to managing the payroll.
