who will hit more homers next year??
kemp or ethier and how many??
i gotta go with Tie!!! 35 EACH!!
by matthewmafa on Dec 14, 2009 7:03 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Kemp and Ethier both had 9 "Just Enoughs" according to HitTracker
I think Kemp will hit more next year because of his raw power.
by fritts on Dec 14, 2009 7:07 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think Kemp will still need some time to harness his power
He’ll probably top out at around 29 or so.

Only slightly. I think he will hit more doubles.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 14, 2009 7:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
i think he will hit the same amount..
but more on the road and less at home.

Ethier hit 31 HR this year though.
Or did you mean same amount of doubles?
by Eric Stephen on Dec 14, 2009 7:15 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
i mean to say
ethier will hit 35 homers..
but he will do it in a more even fashion.. like 18 at home 17 on the road..
he went like 22 and 9 this year home road.. so if he ups his road homers he can hit 35

There are nearly 1100 comments on MLBTR about the Halladay/Lee deal
Pretty funny, considering no real prospects have been named and especially considering how moronic most of the people are on there.
by BFDC on Dec 14, 2009 7:15 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
As the HalLeeday world turns
From MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki:
Sources say only Phillies would receive Seattle prospects for Lee. None would be shipped to Toronto. Kyle Drabek is involved
by Eric Stephen on Dec 14, 2009 7:17 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Drabek and Brown/Taylor would be good.
by Tripon on Dec 14, 2009 7:18 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
A good start you mean?
Considering what they were asking from us…
by BFDC on Dec 14, 2009 7:19 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Call me crazy, and I know it’s not my money to spend, but if I were the Phillies and I had enough to trade for Halladay on my own, I would allow a $10m increase in payroll for one year for a unique opportunity to have both Halladay and Lee at the top of the rotation (oh yeah, followed by Hamels).
I say this without knowing the return they are getting for Lee, of course.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 14, 2009 7:20 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
if the Stark rumor is true that the Blue Jays are paying $6m of Halladay’s $15.75m of course.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 14, 2009 7:21 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I honestly think they would be better off sticking with Lee and keeping their prospects.
The upgrade to Halladay is probably less than 1 win. Lee pitched great for them down the stretch and in the playoffs.
by fritts on Dec 14, 2009 7:22 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
True
But I can see where they are coming from, to a point. Lee didn’t want to sign a long-term deal, but Halladay will. They want a guy at the top for the next few years of their window
by Eric Stephen on Dec 14, 2009 7:24 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
In that case I'd go after Halladay next offseason and stick with Lee for now.
by fritts on Dec 14, 2009 7:25 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Except Halladay likely wouldn’t be available then…Toronto would probably end up trading him to the Yankees and he’d sign there.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 14, 2009 7:26 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Why is he dead set on signing long-term with the team that acquires him?
by fritts on Dec 14, 2009 7:28 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Looks like only 3 years, and he’s choosing to go to a place he feels has an excellent chance to win.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 14, 2009 7:29 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I also read somewhere that he specifically likes Philly. Not sure exactly why, but it may be that he would prefer to stay out of the NY or Boston media frenzy, while still pitching for a winner on the East Coast with Florida spring training.

I thought there was a quote in the last thread that the Phillies train close to Halladay’s Florida home.

Seems like a steep price to pay for the opportunity to sign him to an extension.
Halladay, Lee, Beckett, Vazquez and Webb will all be free agents next offseason as of now.
by fritts on Dec 14, 2009 7:35 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
No doubt. I would have kept Lee as well.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 14, 2009 7:37 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
And if they really like the Seattle prospects they are keeping, then they are avoiding wiping out the farm. They don’t have many people obligated to them after 2011.

From all the reports, I'm starting to think that other GM's must really like Ruben Amaro.
I mean he must be one hell of a guy, because he seems to get other teams to reduce their asking price.
For example, I think the Indians basically got a bunch of crap for Lee, and if the package is close to what Stark is now reporting for Halladay (Taylor, D’ Arnaud and Happ or Drabek) then once again, the Jays would be getting a lot less than what they were asking for from other teams.
by BFDC on Dec 14, 2009 7:24 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
espn reports..
SEA: Lee
TOR: D’Arnaud, Drabek, Taylor
PHIL: Gillies, Aumont, Doc
by matthewmafa on Dec 14, 2009 7:24 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Baseball America had those three Phillies’ prospects as their 2-3-4 (Brown is #1).
Earlier today, Ben Badler said on Twitter that Taylor is probably still a top 25 prospect in MLB, FWIW. Not sure of his personal list, but if it jives with the rest of BA, that would mean Drabek is also a top 25 prospect.

by matthewmafa on Dec 14, 2009 7:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Seriously they are going to have nothing but Brown after this trade. I guess they’ll have whatever they get back from Seattle, and then they have a future Juan Pierre that Phillies fans hype up named Gose, and a potential good reliever name Chapman and thats it as far as I know of. Not sure who they got in this past draft though.
by BFDC on Dec 14, 2009 7:46 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Not to harp on the point
but if these rumors are accurate, I’m still very surprised that the Jays would settle on just three guys even though Taylor and Drabek are both highly regarded.
They wanted Buchholz, Kelly/Westmoreland + others from Boston
They wanted Jesus Montero, Joba or Phil Hughes, Austin Jackson + others from Yanks
They wanted 5 or 6 guys from us, or to include Billz + others
Getting just these three guys from Philly doesn’t make sense to me.

The park factor for everything but triples is above average in Adelanto though. More singles, more doubles, more homers are hit there.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 14, 2009 8:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I do think the park affected him though
Check out Gillies’ home/road splits:
Home: 10% LD%, .194 ISOp
Away: 16% LD%, .095 ISOp
Looks like he changed his game for his home park. Tried (successfully) to launch the ball at home, was more of a line drive guy on the road.

Gillies was at the High Desert / 66ers games I was at in June, and his speed did stand out. He was really close to trying for 3B (from 1B) on a normal wild pitch. I think he would have made it, too.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 14, 2009 8:02 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Seriously
If this ends up being true, the M’s are making out like bandits, then the Phils, and I would say the Jays are the losers. They are going to get a probable backup catcher, a good starter (who has already had Tommy John) and a potentially good OF.
A few months ago, they could have gotten at least four if not five prospects top prospects.

i wouldnt say the jays are loosers..
darnoud can still become a good major league catcher.. he has great Defense already and still needs to work on his hitting.
taylor is a big time power hitter at 6-6 and has produced monsterous numbers the last 2 years in the minors..
drabek is a Future 1 or 2 starter accoording to many..
by matthewmafa on Dec 14, 2009 8:02 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
They may have been able to get more, but as it stands now as rumored, the Jays will get more for Halladay than…

the Indians got for CC (½ season)
the Indians (½ season) or the Phillies got for Lee

on BR, his age 21 AA season was quite a bit off from Kershaw’s age 20 AA season, FWIW.
by Capt Obvious on Dec 15, 2009 12:14 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Drabek didn't even outperform Billingsleys age 20 AA season.
Not to mention Drabek has already had Tommy John. Not sure if that is a flag to teams anymore, but I was browsing a list of players who have the surgery, and it seemed that most of the ones who got TJ at a young age turned out to be injury prone throughout their careers (although there are some successful exceptions)

It’s so funny listening to these Philadelphia fans complain about the owners not willing to spend to have Halladay AND Lee. Try being us for a few days, guys!
Well justified moping notwithstanding, I do see their point. If the latest reports are true, it’s intersting that the Phillies are NOW willing to part with the same prospects that they weren’t willing to at the trade deadline for Halladay. Guess losing to the Yankees really leaves a toll!

At age four, Gillies was diagnosed with a hearing impairment that has left him with 30 percent hearing in one ear and 60 percent in the other. Thanks to the use of hearing aids and an ability to read lips Gilles has little trouble overcoming his impairment. He said this about his disability:
" I had to try harder. It made me stronger. It’s the focus – I have to focus hard on everything I do in life. On the field I depend on knowing every situation, cutoff plays, where baserunners are, because I can’t always hear people yelling. I rely on what I see and what I know about the game. I study it. I think my vision is probably phenomenal, I know I see things other people don’t. I think the lack of one sense forced me to use another more, so I see everything going on around me. I have to. "

I’d be surprised if Brad Penny has as good of a season as Joel Pineiro had last year. They also have no fifth starter, and their internal options aren’t very good. Also, they don’t have DeRosa, leaving a hole at 3B as of now. They also have lost Ankiel, although not the biggest loss really, since Rasmus is ready to go the whole season.

Paying Brad Penny slightly less than the Phils are gonna pay for Lee, and now this. They are literally going for broke.

There’s always a chance Seattle could flip Lee at the deadline for a HELL of a lot more than Aumount/Gillies.

They could, but they will actually be contending!!

Haha I knew you were kidding, but I was curious. Is he going to MLB camp with a shot at the rotation or are they planning to protect him for a year or half a year?
I know I could google this, but don’t feel like it.

The Phillies didn’t get much for Lee either. Aumont and Gillies, are you serious?!
by silverwidow on Dec 15, 2009 7:39 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I am shocked by this deal!
Aumont and Gillies for Lee seems light, and I can’t believe the Jays are sending $6 Million to get those three prospects!
