Juan Pierre Traded To White Sox

The Dodgers have traded outfielder Juan Pierre to the White Sox for two players to be named later, per Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports.  Brown also reports the Dodgers are picking up "about half of remaining salary."

Buster Olney of ESPN reports the Dodgers will pay $7 million (of the $10 million) to Pierre in 2010, and $3.5 million (of the $8.5 million) in 2011.

General manager Ned Colletti had this to say:

Juan always put the Dodgers first, even when it wasn’t in his personal best interest.  In this day, that is a rare attribute. When he and I spoke at the end of the season, we agreed that if an opportunity presented itself in which his chance to play would be enhanced, we would pursue it and that’s what we’ve done. He deserved the chance to play more.

I don't expect the pitchers to be much.  This deal is pure salary relief for the Dodgers.  The Dodgers have until January 7 to pick the two players from the White Sox.

Because it is a rule that when writing about Juan Pierre, it must be mentioned what a great guy he is, I will not deviate from that.  Pierre is a hard worker, and by all accounts a good teammate.  This is not in dispute, as I have seen it with my own eyes.  This has also been mentioned for three seasons by many in the mainstream media, often before noting his acutal production on the baseball field.

In the interests of full disclosure, I will admit that the day Pierre signed with the Dodgers I sent an email to my family with the subject "God Damnit" because I was so pissed off at the signing.  I hold no ill will toward Pierre the person, but I just want to lay out the facts about Pierre the player.

From 2007 to 2009, there have been 234 players with 1,000 plate appearances.  Pierre ranks...

  • 211th in OPS+ (84)
  • 218th in SLG (.357)

OK, that's not fair.  Pierre's game is getting on base and scoring runs.  Among those 234 major leaguers, Pierre ranks...

  • 140th in OBP (.339)
  • 133rd in runs/PA (12.63%)

Heading into 2007, the Dodgers had Matt Kemp, who at the time was thought by many to be unable to play center field.  The Dodgers chose to give Pierre five years rather than signing a stopgap like Kenny Lofton for one year.  After 2007, the Dodgers thought so much of Pierre's defense in center field that they signed Andruw Jones.  Now, both Pierre and Jones are on the White Sox, still getting paid by the Dodgers, and the Dodgers have their man in center field who has been here all along.

Thank you, Juan Pierre, for playing well for the first part of the Manny Ramirez suspension, in May, and creating trade value that wasn't there before this season.

Pierre acquired FOR minor leaguers

by Colletti! it’s like our world is turned upside down! A parallel universe! We’re through the looking glass, people!

Any idea who the pitchers are yet?

Given the team needs OF depth

and he’s like the Thing That Won’t Die, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Right now it’s Paul, Repko, and who knows what, as outfield depth.

Maybe we’ll get Jonny Gomes now after all, eh Eric?

PS: I do wish

Juan good luck and good health, no hard feelings against him at all.

I just hope this salary relief is actually used for something useful.

Best case scenario

The money saved is used to try and lock up Matt Kemp (I realize this alone is not enough but its a good start.)

Hey, Ken Rosenthal stole my joke. Or my point. Or whatever it was.

I do feel bad for Juan on that point. Doubt he’s looking forward to seeing Goo-man.

We are eating half the salary, so I would hope Ned got something decent at least.

The White Sox Pitching Prospects Are...

…are fairly undesirable even in the Top 5 to 15 range. I think we got warm bodies like the guy we got from the Pirates for Delwyn Young. The advantage of the deal to us almost certainly lies solely in saving $9 million.

by CanuckDodger on Dec 15, 2009 8:26 AM PST reply actions

HA!

Exactly what I predicted, Dodgers pay half and dump salary.

by LA Taco on Dec 15, 2009 8:27 AM PST reply actions

How pathetic

is the state of financials that the biggest thing we’ve had to cheer about this winter is moving $10Million in salary when you consider that is this probably just saving some money for Frank and will do nothing to enhance the team.

At least we can do away with what bad contract we could trade Juan for. No more Castillo, Arroyo, Harang, or Meche. No we simply have to either trade prospects for rotation on buy cheap on the free market.

By the way, this isn't a bad move for the White Sox

I mean, 2 years, 9 million when you basically have only one outfielder than can play there without dying. It’s a fine contract.

Even better at 2/$8m :)

What's the point of a PTBNL during the offseason?

It’s not like players need to clear waivers (like with Abreu last year)

by Michael White on Dec 15, 2009 8:47 AM PST reply actions

The only thing I could think of is if they were recently drafted. Maybe Logan like a couple of their later picks?

by BFDC on Dec 15, 2009 8:48 AM PST up reply actions

The Dodgers might have a list from which to choose two players, and they just haven’t yet picked the players.

by Eric Stephen on Dec 15, 2009 8:55 AM PST up reply actions

So in that case, since there is a six month window, do you wait until April or May to do some scouting and then pick two guys, or do you get them into the Dodgers system now and start the year fresh?

by BFDC on Dec 15, 2009 8:58 AM PST up reply actions

Depends on what they agreed upon. Most likely they set a date by which the Dodgers have to pick the players, most likely sometime before spring training.

Only way it would be six months is if it was indeed 2009 draft picks.

by Eric Stephen on Dec 15, 2009 9:00 AM PST up reply actions

PTLB's Have To Be Named Within Six Months

And nobody drafted in 2009 will be eligible to be traded within the next six months.

by CanuckDodger on Dec 15, 2009 8:49 AM PST reply actions

If we're talking about MLBTR

Anyone who has an account there, be sure to pile on to the Jays fans who were just so certain last month that the Dodgers were stupid for not wanting to part with Billingsley and top prospects for Halladay.

Haha, look what you ended up getting you fuckers…

by Capt Obvious on Dec 15, 2009 9:00 AM PST reply actions

I often read the comments on that site

but it is very difficult to post anything because a very strong majority know nothing.

For instance, several people still don’t understand that the Phillies are trying to keep a strict payroll and that’s why they are trading Lee. They are calling Philly cheap and stupid.

Another guy wrote, why don’t they just non-tender Blanton ( who is not in arbitration years)

There are others who think the Dodgers now suck because we traded Pierre, and those same people think the Dodgers are going to be getting two good B prospects.

Someone on there wrote the Phillies are idiots for getting an OF (referring to Gillies) who has no power and bad plate discipline when Gillies had like a .430 OBP the last couple years.

And NO ONE on that site knows anything about prospects, although they all think they do. Basically they read BA’s top 100 list and think anyone one there is awesome and no one else is worth discussing.

by BFDC on Dec 15, 2009 9:08 AM PST up reply actions

Blanton is arbitration eligible

I could have sworn he had a contract in place. No? Maybe Im one of the idiots

by BFDC on Dec 15, 2009 9:11 AM PST up reply actions

Aye

They are overrating Drabek quite a bit over there. Top of the rotation Ace potential? Mkay, I guess you could say that about alot of players then.

by Capt Obvious on Dec 15, 2009 9:11 AM PST up reply actions

We would be saying the same of Withrow so I have no problem with Phillie fans thinking he has that potential.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 15, 2009 9:19 AM PST up reply actions

True, but if you ask a Phillies fan, Withrow is not even in the same league as Drabek

by BFDC on Dec 15, 2009 9:20 AM PST up reply actions

It’s an MLBTR thing. If it’s a Dodgers prospect, he’s no good, or overrated at best. Just last month they were saying Bills is overrated because he wasn’t even trusted to start in the playoffs so dealing him and our best prospects for Halladay was a fair deal, but could be easily beaten by other teams like the Red Sox.

It’s that attitude that I’m mocking here. Quite simply, the haul the Jays fans expected to get didn’t materialize. They can be happy with Drabek all they want but he’s no Chad Billingsley.

by Capt Obvious on Dec 15, 2009 9:35 AM PST up reply actions

Not just Phils fans but Jays fans, some of whom were shitting on Billingsley just last month.

by Capt Obvious on Dec 15, 2009 9:25 AM PST up reply actions

Phillies and for some reason Jays fans LOVE Drabek for some reason.

It was pointed out yesterday that both Kershaw and Billz outperformed Drabek at same age at AA. Plus Drabek has already had a TJ surgery.

by BFDC on Dec 15, 2009 9:19 AM PST up reply actions

The problem with these Juan Pierre comments is that they always misdirect the blame

Where is written that it is Colletti who gave him the contract that is now worth 44% of what he paid, when Juan really played pretty much like his previous stats would indicate?

Signing Pierre for two years for 8 million seems like a good signing to me. Signing Pierre to that mammoth contract, which was probably worth at most about 66% of its value as soon as the pen had dried was the problem. It doesn’t help that that is the exact same time they got rid of Werth.

Juan Pierre sure as hell hasn’t hurt this team. He has played well and done his part in contributing to the team. He has done the most of taking advantages of opportunities given him (like saying hell yes to a 5 year 50 million year dea, stepping up for Manny, helping us in the playoffs) and I wish him well and I disparage him no ill will that huge mountain of Dodger cash he is taking with him to Chicago. Colletti and management hurt the team with a bad contract. Where is all of the outrage to Colletti and management that have never ever seemed to really take the responsibility for that contract? Stupidity like that and the AJ signing is exactly why the the team is almost bankrupt. Even the guy who eventually worked out, Manny, has been way too expensive when you add Juan Pierre’s loss of 56% of his contract value and 99% (the 1% being money recovered from the Rangers, not any performance on the field) loss of contract value from AJ and all of that was to replace a player they already had. Werth-Pierre-AJ-Manny, really why is there not more blame directed at this pattern?

Anyway good luck with your new team Juan and enjoy your cash.

by Cool Dudes on Dec 15, 2009 9:02 AM PST reply actions

I and many others have spent three years, here and at Dodger Thoughts, ripping Colletti for the Pierre move.

by Eric Stephen on Dec 15, 2009 9:07 AM PST up reply actions

Yup

Colletti has never been given a free pass. In fact, a lot of the good moves he has made since then have probably gone underappreciated because of how badly he screwed up the Pierre contract.

But let me just say, that the people who constantly harp about how Juan Pierre sucks over and over again on the internet are the equivalent to those at Dodger stadium who yell “(Visiting Team) Sucks” and I see them as no better than Phil sees those who do that at Dodger stadium.

And I don’t need conjecture to prove you wrong. I’ve been to games with DT folk and TBLA folk, of which I’d say about 90% are unimpressed with Juan Pierre as a starting ballplayer and not one of them would ever chant “team sucks”.

I’m saying to me, that’s the internet equivalent, not that that’s an indication that their behavior would be like that at DS. Its obnoxious to me. That’s all, not that those people would ever utter any chants in real life. I’m saying people saying Juan sucks over and over are as annoying to me as those making that chant in DS are to you.

Its more of a personal opinion, so you can disagree with it, but I can pretty much vouch for its accuracy.

Haven’t seen the final trade, but I don’t think it will technically be a 3- or 4-team trade because all the Seattle prospects are going to Philly. So that part is like two “companion” trades, as I saw people call it last night.

RT @jonmorosi One source says John Ely and Jon Link are the pitchers heading from #WhiteSox to #Dodgers.

by Tripon on Dec 15, 2009 9:30 AM PST up reply actions

Per Sickels for Ely and Southsidesox.com for Link

John Ely, RHP, Grade C: I know scouts hate him but he just keeps getting people out. Passed Double-A Finesse Pitcher Test with flying colors.

Jon Link: The lack of a September call-up for this member of the 40-man roster is telling. I previewed Link before the season and pointed out that while he strikes out a good amount, he also walks a good amount. Literally, nothing changed this season at Charlotte from last season at Birmingham as he had identical 2.44 K/BB ratios. While the 10.5 K/9 is sexy, you just can’t walk that many guys and expect to be successful in the majors. The scouting reports remain encouraging but, at some point, you have to match with performance.

by BFDC on Dec 15, 2009 9:34 AM PST up reply actions

I was hoping both would be non-40-man types, but Link probably has a season to see what he can do in the PCL.
