Pierre Deal Complete; Link & Ely Come to LA
The Dodgers and White Sox have finalized the Juan Pierre trade, with the Dodgers receiving pitchers Jon Link and John Ely from the White Sox, per Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com.
Link is on the 40-man roster, which brings the Dodgers' total to 36. Link has two option years remaining. Ely was drafted in 2007, and doesn't have to be placed on the 40-man roster (for protection in the Rule 5 draft) until 2011.

Close to zero. Rule 5ers Monasterios & Zerpa will be given every shot to make it, as will the out of options pair of Stults and Haeger.

I'm even more glad we didn't trade him for Milton Bradley!
Sheesh- just when everything was going so well for the Mariners…
here's a small article from a Chicago sports writer
The trade seems to be bothering him, which is great for us:
http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2009/12/ely-would-be-a-high-price-for-pierre.html
Personally, I’m not one of those who thought getting rid of Pierre in and of itself was a victory- ESPECIALLY since we (and I mean we literally here, as the paying fans) are still paying more than half his salary. But I knew he had to go under the current circumstances, and I’d much rather get two mid-range prospects who have a shot at being good major league pitchers, rather than an overpriced major league pitcher we already know to be nothing more than mediocre. Besides, given all the potential stars of the future that the Dodgers have given up for decent-but-unspectacular veterans lately, it’s nice to be on the other side, for a change.
Wow the comments on that story
are depressing. Talk about snarky and grouchy.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants country, and damned proud of it.
who me?!
Funny, I guess it’s all about perspective- I thought I was looking on the bright side here! I’m genuinely glad that someone in Chicago is sweating a little over this. I’m also glad that maybe something more than a salary dump will come out of this. The “snarkiness” that you detect is more about what we DIDN’T do here (straight salary dump, etc.), and about some of the things we’ve done in the recent past- which I think we all have a right to feel grouchy about…
I'm fairly certain
Underdog is talking about the link and not you.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
based on the content of the article, I'm not sure
But either way, I think this is our biggest victory of the offseason, which so far, isn’t saying a whole lot. (ok, that was a bit snarky :) )
Silly boy I meant the comments under that Chicago story
not you ;-) There’s this whole battle between White Sox fans and Cubs fans which is this world I forget about. Read those comments…
No I totally agree with you, it makes me like the trade more. I think the odds are one of those guys contributes to the Dodgers, at least, which makes it a win.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants country, and damned proud of it.
OHHhhhhhh
I guess based on the reaction from some of my more incendiary posts in the past, I figured maybe I’d started something again. Wow- so this must be how Milton Bradley feels like ALL the time! Yikes. LMAO
Well, at least I gave Phil another legitimate chance to use the word “link” there- well played, sir!
I didn't even have to read the
Link to know that Underdog was not talking about your comments. He’s to polite to call someone “snarky” and “grouchy” who posts here.
By the way, I know Eric and I removed a few commentators a while back but the general tone on TBLA has been very pleasant for a while now. Especially given what we have to work with regarding the Dodgers.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

Jason Repko turns 29 later this month. At this point, isn’t he just another AAAA outfielder like recent Dodger farmhands John-Ford Griffin and George Lombard (and his orchestra)? His last two years he put up a .822 and a .800 OPS in Vegas and Albuquerque, respectively.

Speaking of our erstwhile bullpen vets
WIth all the arms that the Dodgers are collecting, and with the lack of talk from anyone about the bullpen needing a veteran arm, does this mean no Park/Weaver/Mota signing for this offseason? Does Colletti consider Sherrill to be sufficient veteran presence in the pen?
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
If anything, it might be one of the Miller/Ayala NRI types that plays the veteran role. Although I thought they were still semi-interested in bringing back Weaver.

The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
“I’m a Dodger, that’s all I know. I’m just ecstatic to be going to a solid organization, to be honest with you.”
That reaction has not been universal in the Ely camp. After all, the right-handed pitcher grew up a Sox fan.
“In the family there’ve been mixed reviews,” he said. “Some people are a little irritated they won’t get to see me in a White Sox jersey. But, most people are happy I’m getting an opportunity from a great organization.”
His first name isn’t Robert, so I’m guessing the former.

Anyone who is not a Mariners fan and doesn’t drink their Kool-aid is their enemy. Similar to MCC. LL is like the smart preppy school types, who if you don’t dress like them, drive German cars like them and don’t drink your tea with your pinky sticking out will single you out of the crowd. MCC on the other hand is like the reform school types, who can be fun to get drunk with or skip school with, but will steal your wallet and threaten to beat you up after school if you don’t give them your lunch money types.

Jamey Carroll deal is official
none of the buzzwords were used in the release:
"We are very pleased to add Jamey," Colletti said. "He provides us with defensive versatility and can also be an asset offensively. He also brings the Dodgers great make up and work ethic
but "work ethic" is pretty close
maybe Ned reads the blogs, and figured he needed to change his cliches around!

Claudio Vargas
parlayed his nice season out of the pen into $900k guaranteed + $00k in incentives (per Tom Haudricourt)
Thomas (LA)
The Dodgers are allegedly looking at Harang. Is he a bounceback candidate? Can he be a #2 or #3?
Klaw
(2:34 PM)
Yes, I’d take a shot at him. Could be a #3 who soaks up some innings, gives them more rope to give Billingsley to hang himself.
Cory (LA)
Your comment earlier about Billingsley and the rope, what issues do you see there?
Klaw
(2:42 PM)
I wish I could explain it. It’s command, poise, all that intangible stuff – except that he has had those things in the past. The stuff coming out of his arm is fine. Psychological? Some minor soreness he’s not reporting? I just don’t know.
K Law is groping
Colletti, White and company put a big value on make-up, character, and such intangible things. They would not have handled Billingsley the way they did over the past few seasons if they didn’t thing he had the intangibles, and they would know that better than Keith Law. And what past poise and intangible stuff issues did he have in the past? The unreported physical stuff sounds more likely to me.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
I read that to say
he had the intangibles in the past and they mysteriously deserted him. And the rope comment I took to mean “buy him time, take the pressure off a bit”. poorly phrased but it’s an online chat…
I can definitely buy your interpretation on the intangibles part. But the because the rope comment ends with “hang himself”, I can’t go your interpretation on that part.

Claims the young kids still need ‘leadership’. Claims that he has the ability to sign the younger talent to an extension but chooses not to. Claims that if they did sign some of the younger guys, they’d regret it already.
The whole interview just made me sure that I wouldn’t want Colletti as a GM.
I’m really sick of the leadership angle myself. Do the younger players on the Red Sox like Lester or Pedroia need leadership? Do the younger players on the Brewers like Braun or Fielder need leadership? Do the younger players on the Mets like Wright and Reyes need leadership? Do the younger players on Phillies like Howard and Utley needed leadership during their incredible run?
These “kids” are in their mid-20s now. Frankly, I’m tired of the angle myself. But that was such a “Ned” thing to say.

Why wouldn’t you want to sign Kemp an extension, at least Kemp!!
by Julio Nievas on Dec 18, 2009 5:54 PM PST up reply actions
I kind of agree
with his conclusion but not so much how he got to it. At blogger night he was asked about extending the young players to long-term deals (buying out their arbitration years and first few year(s) of FAgency). His philosophy was that you want the players to play hungry, in otherwords they would play harder/better knowing that they were playing for a fat paycheck down the road (perhaps with another team though). I think now he is stating that players like Russell Martin who had a tremendous season a couple of years ago, was being named as a player the Dodgers would be crazy not to lock up. If they had, perhaps they’d be regretting that now. He also mentioned the Dodgers had the resources to instead of buyout arb years, they could just sign the players as free agents later down the road and that if the player deserved the fat paycheck (and I am paraphrasing) then he could get it then. He said the buying out of arb years was something they had talked about with agents, but didn’t sound like the two sides were anywhere close on a deal. Knowing what we know now, Kemp is probably the only one we should’ve locked up. If they had locked up Martin, Loney or to a lesser degree Billingsley there may be some teeth mashing going on. The “leadership” stuff is just front office jargon imo.
vr, Xei
Except they really do sign/trade guys for ‘leadership’ qualities. Its not the primary reason for a sign or trade but its an important part of their process. Outside of NRIs like Weaver/Belisario, what major signing/Trade didn’t have the vaunted ‘leadership’ tag?
That was later. He didn’t have that “tag” when the trade was made.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
I think there is truth to this comment, despite the Dodger financial difficulties. Ignoring deferred payments, the Dodgers have very little committed to players after the next two seasons, at which time only Broxton (and Sherrill and Repko) reaches FA. According to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, the only commitments the Dodgers have for the 2012 season is a $1.25M buyout of a $6M club option on Casey Blake and a $12M club option on Furcal with no apparent buyout, but that vests if Furcal has 600 PAs in 2011. That’s it. The Dodger most certainly could wait it out and then offer contracts to the FAs that they really do want to keep, and at prices dictated by their performances to that date.
One might imagine that the Dodgers are doing this intentionally so as to have the most flexibility as possible as these players reach FA. Now, by the 2012-2013 offseason, when Ethier, Kemp, Billingsley, Martin, Loney, and Kuo all hit FA, thy Dodgers have to fish or cut bait, and they can’t afford to keep them all if they are all very good players, but they will be able to let loose those that have turned out to be disappointments.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

The Dodgers signed outfielder Brian Barton to a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to major-league camp.
He's a local
Westchester HS and Loyola Marymount U (on an acedemic scholorship) briefly, then transferred to UMiami. Dodgers drafted him in the 38th round of the 2000 draft out of HS, but he “didn’t get drafted out of the University of Miami after a productive college career because teams were worried that he was going to finish his degree in aerospace engineering and hook on with Boeing, where he interned, or perhaps NASA.” I like him already. (He’s also a Reggie Cleveland All-Star candidate.)
