I know Christmas isn't until tomorrow, but a lot of people get together on Christmas Eve, too.  Here's hoping you all have the best holiday season possible.

For Phil

Jason Rosenberg is running a commissioner for a day series. Today’s installment is right up Phil’s alley. His proposed new rule:

1. Teams will continue to be allowed to expand their rosters to 40 players on September 1.
2. Managers must submit a 25-payer roster for each game.
3. The 25-player roster must include the last 4 pitchers to start games for each team.

by Eric Stephen on Dec 24, 2009 8:16 AM PST reply actions

I thought I was the only one fighting that battle

I can remember bringing this up every year in Sept at DT and basically being told I’m the only one who had a problem with the expanded rosters. Nice to know my Island is not so lonely.

From Bob Elliot of the Toronto Sun about Halladay

Day 3 of Winter Meetings….The Dodgers make four different offers, two with a big-league arm and three minor-leaguers, plus two other offers. The problem with the Dodgers offers is that the prospects are either in the majors or at class-A. It was a major-league ready gap that the Dodgers could not bridge.

by BFDC on Dec 24, 2009 9:24 AM PST reply actions

That means we DID NOT offer Withrow. Yes!

by silverwidow on Dec 24, 2009 9:26 AM PST up reply actions

Well we don’t know what the “two other offers” were. Could have been four or five minor leaguers headlined by Withrow

by BFDC on Dec 24, 2009 9:28 AM PST up reply actions

The “prospects” are clearly labeled as Class-A players, though. Withrow did not fit into that category as of the Winter Meetings.

by silverwidow on Dec 24, 2009 9:30 AM PST up reply actions

Happy Hollidays!

My proposed change would be to stash Rule V picks in the minors for at least 60 days for evaluation purposes.

by silverwidow on Dec 24, 2009 9:25 AM PST reply actions

Wouldn't that defeat the whole point of Rule 5?

Isn’t the rule designed to prevent teams from destroying a player’s career by letting him rot in the minors? Teams have X years to get a player ready for the majors, and if they don’t, other teams get crack.

I know it’s just 60 days you’re talking about, but 60 days is 60 days.

by Humma Kavula on Dec 24, 2009 9:31 AM PST up reply actions

A 60-day waiting period for the majors or a possible trade to a new organization is still a pretty sweet deal.

by silverwidow on Dec 24, 2009 9:34 AM PST up reply actions

I can get on board with one addition.

Even if the player is set to the minors for 60 days, he must be paid the major league minimum.

Read over some of your arguments on Clips Nation

Awesome! Everyone kept giving you crap about you admiring ZBO’s play and blah, while you delivered excellent points.

I also can’t believe the many fans that think BG is going explode as if he’s been playing in the NBA for years now, have Clippers fans gone to “that” point?

by Julio Nievas on Dec 24, 2009 5:21 PM PST up reply actions

Also

I don’t care what anyone says, if you think Marcus Camby is an “excellent” defender, you have not been watching the NBA for the last few years.

Thanks man

But I’m definitely fighting an uphill battle over there.

signs with The As on a 1 year deal that can be worth 5.5 million if he reaches all of his incentives…

the dodgers couldnt give him a 1 year 5 million dollar daeal with incentives to 6.5 so he could sign with us?? this guys is a great pitcher

by matthewmafa on Dec 24, 2009 10:19 AM PST reply actions

Yea that is a good signing

by BFDC on Dec 24, 2009 10:35 AM PST up reply actions

Perhaps a sign that prices are coming down.

by uclatroy on Dec 24, 2009 10:38 AM PST up reply actions

actually i dont know about that

he didnt pitch at all in 09.. and his only success starting was 3/4 of the season in 08..

so.. i really have no clue.

by matthewmafa on Dec 24, 2009 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

thats good...

for us… de rosa is old and will continue to decline… derosa and renteria with sandoval and Uribe at 2nd?

by matthewmafa on Dec 24, 2009 10:53 AM PST up reply actions

o shit

forgot about sanchez.. so sanchez at 2nd and uribe is the utility guy..

by matthewmafa on Dec 24, 2009 10:54 AM PST up reply actions

who has the better infield??

casey blake= mark derosa

dewitt=renteria

furcal=sanchez

pablo>loney

no way.. do the giants really have a better infield then us?

by matthewmafa on Dec 24, 2009 10:56 AM PST reply actions

lol

i just never thought the giants would have an equal or better infield then us..

by matthewmafa on Dec 24, 2009 11:26 AM PST up reply actions

martin ? posey

2010 might be the last year we still win that one . . .

by kinbote on Dec 24, 2009 11:41 AM PST up reply actions

nope..

i think posey will out do martin next year..

its not that hard..

he just has to hit 11 homers . 270 340 and a slugging percent north of 350 which isnt hard.. this posey guy is a stud and will be able to do that with his eyes closed

by matthewmafa on Dec 24, 2009 12:24 PM PST up reply actions

Compare Starting Pitching

and you will want to punch Frank McCourt in the face.

by Cool Dudes on Dec 24, 2009 11:40 AM PST up reply actions

Lincecum > Kershaw (in 2010, at least)
Cain = Billingsley
Zito = Kuroda
Sanchez > Elbert (for the mere fact that our guy has never started a ML game)

by silverwidow on Dec 24, 2009 11:47 AM PST up reply actions

I think a healthy 30-35 start Kuroda is way better, but we have yet to see that.

by delias man on Dec 24, 2009 12:02 PM PST up reply actions

There's a healthy Kuroda?

Damn, we should have signed him when we had money :)

by Cool Dudes on Dec 24, 2009 12:17 PM PST up reply actions

in my opinion...

lincecum>kershaw
cain>billingsley by a smidge..
Zitocombo or mcdonald and elbert

but that doesnt matter cause our offense will either clobber those pitchers or our pitching will shut down the giants which makes the giants starting pitcher not get a win like we did against licecum last year (ethier game tying single in 9th)

by matthewmafa on Dec 24, 2009 12:23 PM PST up reply actions

I'm glad you bring that up

I really expect the 2010 Elbert to pitch like jonathan sanchez circa 2008, IF they give him the chance

Am I off base?

by hirambocachica on Dec 24, 2009 12:30 PM PST up reply actions

don't forget

Bumgarner. Could arrive on scene quick ala Kershaw.

by kinbote on Dec 24, 2009 12:34 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe we can look to our future infield being better?

1B – Loney < Kung Fu Panda
2B – DeJesus > Nick Noonan or Eugenio Velez
SS – Gordon > Ehire Adrianza
3B – DeWitt (?) = Conor Gillaspie

Colletti insider video

These are great! A camera crew follows Ned around on October 3rd (TBLA Night) and there’s lots of behind the scenes stuff.

I thought it was hilarious that when they showed his office with all of MLB’s 40-man rosters, the first name he pointed to was Carl Crawford — who is probably one of his dream players.

Check it out. Highly recommended.

Chan Ho Park and Chad Kreuter go way back, forming a battery for a couple of seasons in L.A., before the Rangers briefly brought Kreuter in as Park’s personal catcher a few years later. But for some reason, the then-retired Kreuter needed $460,000 in 2005, and Park was happy to oblige.

Top 20 dodger prospects for 2010

disagree with anything or is someones grade to low or high?

dee gordon or chris withrow,,

by matthewmafa on Dec 26, 2009 3:36 PM PST reply actions

Sickles is a lot higher on the Dodgers system than BA is.

by Tripon on Dec 26, 2009 4:10 PM PST up reply actions

I liked Sickels’ list. Withrow would be #1 and A-minus for me and Eovaldi is at least B-minus, but other than that, it’s solid.

by silverwidow on Dec 26, 2009 5:55 PM PST up reply actions

My main problem with Sickels is that I don’t buy into his grading system. It doesn’t really make sense to me. I’m a teacher, so believe me, I understand the concept of default grades—but, what does a C+ even mean?

by kinbote on Dec 26, 2009 7:47 PM PST up reply actions

It depends on age/level/room for growth. A C+ at low-A means the player has some notable flaws such as not able able to walk, or doesn’t hit for power but can develop it later on and ‘earn’ a better grade if he develops.

A C+ at triple-A pretty much says that Sickles expects him to be a bench/reserve player.

“the player has some notable flaws such as not [being] able to walk”
