Winter Meeting Primer

The tweets, texts and news flashes will be a plenty starting Monday morning. How should you act?  Remember that last year, no major deals were made until after the meeting so this week is more of a sounding board.

Star-divide

This year, I believe the "meeting" will be in a convention center, last year they were in Vegas and everyone was on the main floor of the Bellagio Hotel walking between the lobby area to where the elevators were located. There will be a press area in case of  a special announcement (last year it was Maddux's retirement)

If you ever get a chance to go and you like hunting down baseball media types, then this is the place for you.

I am sure at some point, bloggers like TBLA will be able to get credentialed, I understand that once a day, the Dodgers will bring the local papers covering the team up to the room for an update. That was last year and I will be interesting to see if that remains the case.

With everyone fighting to break a story, I think there will be a lot of misinformation being floated out there, remember that in the past Ned has tended to play his cards close and will often surprise you with what deal he makes.  This year, the surprise will be if they make any signings at all.

If you don't mind me asking....

What were you doing at the Winter Meetings last year? Was it official business or just for fun?

by Ian Capilouto on Dec 7, 2009 9:15 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

He was in Vegas at the same time.

On purpose

didn’t he go specially to check out what the winter meetings were like?

So if we were to get credentialed or even not since we are covering the team for something we get paid for (McBurgers) is all that tax deductible?

I would imagine it would be tax deductible

If you are declaring the business income from TBLA, then yes. But you are permitted to have your business lose money only so many years in a row.

I am not a CPA, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Yes the cover story for the trip

Was to take my parents to see a show, etc. But instead I spent some time hanging out in the lobby.

Jon Weisman wrote a similar but more inside view when the meetings were in Anaheim in a few years ago.

You can find that story in his book Best of Dodger Thoughts.
