Dodgers ink the ball stealer
As a bench player he's a good grab but who falls off the roster for him? He is one of the few players in baseball history who was able to play 3rd base even though he's lefthanded. He has an excellent defensive reputation and solid plate discipline but limited power for 1st baseman or pinch hitter. This will be interesting. Maybe Manny said he's not coming unless Minky is part of the package. The 2004 World Championship brotherhood is strong.

I like Mientkiewicz
and I also like the fact that I have memorized the spelling of his name, along with Mark Grudzielanek. “Eyechart” would be a nice addition, but probably only if we carry 11 pitchers (leaving 6 spots on the bench). Unfortunately, 11 pitchers seems like a rarity these days.

L/R
Mientkiewicz throws right-handed, and plenty of L/R have played 3B. He’s a good sub for an injured Loney, but I don’t see what bench role he would have on this team.

With 11 pitchers
wouldn’t there be a spot on a 6-man bench of Mientkiewicz?
It seems the bench will be:
Ausmus
Loretta
Pierre
Abreu (or someone who can play SS)
Pee Wee (switch-hitter)
With another spot on the bench, wouldn’t Minky be OK?

re:
I even checked baseball -reference before posting because I wasn’t sure. It read Bats Left Throws Right, my brain read it as Bats Left / Throws Left because that fit in perfectly with my left handed 3rd base comment. At the moment my brain is a little dull for various reasons. I should stop posting for a little while.
Little chance for Pascucci now but Mientkiewicz would be the better bench player if we got to 11 pitchers. With 12 pitchers would Doug hit the minors or would D Young hit the waivers? I can’t imagine Doug coming here to play AAA baseball.
Either way, it looks like Eric will need to update Spring Training Battles.

Lefty-throwing 3B
Since 1956, there have only been 19 games featuring a lefty-throwing 3B:
Mario Valdez was the last, filling in for the White Sox in a 1997 game after pinch-hitting in the 7th innings.
Don Mattingly started three games at 3B in 1986, and is the only lefty-throwing 3B to HR
Terry Francona played in one game in October 1985, but he did not start.
Mike Squires played the other 14 games, all but one for the 1984 White Sox (the other game was in 1983).
From 1956 through Squires’ game in 1983, there were no lefty throwers at 3B, per BB-Reference.

I hope he doesn't make the team
Seems like Sweeney 2.0, albeit he is somewhat better. I can see it if we go with 11 pitchers, but I doubt that happens.
