Lakers are fortunate to be up right now.

28-22 as I type. Celts are missing open shots.

There's no Lakers blog on SB Nation

so I figured this would be the best place to host it,

Mihm!

I can’t remember the last time I saw Chris Mihm score a bucket, especially in the first half.

-Eric

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 5:55 PM PST reply actions

Seems sloppy so far

I can’t tell if this is good defense by both teams (especially the Celtics) or just horrible passing but it seems every pass is picked off or nearly stolen.

This isn't meant as a jinx, but...

Lakers are sitting at 39-9 with tonight in Boston and Sunday in Cleveland remaining to get them to 50 games.

Best 50-game starts, Laker history
1972: 43-7
1988: 41-9
2009: 39-9 (so far)
2000: 39-11
1973: 39-11

They won the title 3 of these 4 years, and went to the Finals in the other year (1973).

I'm sure I'm not alone on this

But I am a big fan of “The Girlfriend” on the Jim Beam commercials.

“I like hairy back…”

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 6:14 PM PST reply actions

Those are great

I could use a girlfriend like that.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

Luke Walton

I was just about to rip him, then he got a steal and hit a 3.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 6:17 PM PST reply actions

Playing way too sloppy

Bad passes and too many second chances for the Celtics.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 6:20 PM PST reply actions

Pathetic

The Lakers’ rebounding and interior defense have been just awful tonight.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 6:20 PM PST reply actions

I know

how many times are House and Rondo going to get offensive rebounds?

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 6:22 PM PST up reply actions

What an awful pass

They really dodged a bullet with yet another wide open Ray Allen 3

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 6:22 PM PST reply actions

Yeah

I’m just glad Allen’s 3 didn’t go in. Being down 4 would have seemed much worse.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

Is Ray Allen really an all-star?

You could make a good case that, after KG, Rondo has been their best player. Yet Pierce and Allen will be in Phoenix

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 6:24 PM PST up reply actions

I'd say Pierce deserves it

because he’s a really good defender too. But I think Rondo is playing better than Allen certainly. He doesn’t have the name though, which is what All-star games are all about.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 6:27 PM PST up reply actions

Best in the East?

I think Cleveland is the best team in the East, but Boston certainly has a case too.

If the Lakers are fortunate enough to make it back to the Finals, I really, really want to stick it to Boston though.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 6:28 PM PST reply actions

Yeah for sure

This game would really help, it might be the difference in deciding home-court advantage.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 6:30 PM PST up reply actions

re:

Without Bynum I don’t think they have much of chance for home field. 2nd year in a row this will hurt. If this is a trend it is not a good trend since he’s now tied up long term.

by meercatjohn on Feb 5, 2009 6:32 PM PST up reply actions

I need MLB to start up soon.

Like, literally, this is getting hazardous to my health.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 6:33 PM PST reply actions

Agreed

I would like to see the Dodgers’ roster get finalized fairly soon, but I’m trying not to stress over it. We still have the NBA and Pac-10 basketball to tide us over until spring training.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 6:35 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah

hopefully Manny will sign before spring training games start

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 6:53 PM PST up reply actions

Very Nice TNT

Tonight’s T-Mobile text question, with The Mailman in studio:

Who was the better power forward?

1) Karl Malone
2) Charles Barkley

I was always a Barkley man myself, but both were great (sans championships of course).

They might be 2-3 all-time, behind Duncan. I could see a case for Bob Pettit as well.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 6:40 PM PST reply actions

re:

Malone was much better then Barkley in my opinion.

by meercatjohn on Feb 5, 2009 6:42 PM PST up reply actions

Manny Numbers

I really enjoyed the hard times article on Manny regarding how DT is a great park for Manny to hit in. I’d like him to run those numbers on Manny in SF. I think he’d really suffer and he knows that.

by meercatjohn on Feb 5, 2009 6:41 PM PST reply actions

What makes you say that?

AT&T is not especially hard on righty hitters, its tough on lefties.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 6:55 PM PST up reply actions

re:

They were talking about his power to center and right center. Don’t they have that huge right center wall?

by meercatjohn on Feb 5, 2009 6:56 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, its 420 ft. in right center

I guess that’d be a factor. Still though, I think it wouldn’t make too much of a difference. Left and Center aren’t any deeper than DS.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 6:58 PM PST up reply actions

re:

Not just the depth, they have a wall out there in right center don’t they? Might be one of the toughest places to hit a home run. Imagine having to hit it 420 feet and high. Maybe I’m imagining things.

by meercatjohn on Feb 5, 2009 7:05 PM PST up reply actions

No you're right

The 20 ft wall (around there at least) goes all the way to the 420 sign. Its definitely harder to hit it out that way. But he could still pull it or hit it to center, and its not like Manny just barely gets the ball over the fence.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 7:30 PM PST up reply actions

Get this basketball nonsense out of here! Andrew never would’ve let this happen! Revolt! Revolt!

I love Steve Martin, but

Pink Panther 2 just looks awful. Peter Sellers is spinning in his grave.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:08 PM PST reply actions

That drive by Pierce

It seemed like he was destined to get fouled on that play, since Ariza was late. Gasol should have dropped the hammer on him instead of jumping backwards.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:18 PM PST up reply actions

This game is very frustrating

The Lakers have dodged some bullets and played horribly at times, yet they’re down only 4. This is a winnable game.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:15 PM PST reply actions

Josh Powell

is the Lakers’ most aggressive post player tonight. Ugh.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:18 PM PST reply actions

In MLB news

the Padres released former number 1 overall pick Matt Bush. Now there’s a bust for you.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 7:20 PM PST reply actions

Such a bad pick

The Padres totally went cheap on that pick, and paid for it.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:22 PM PST up reply actions

I know, they got what they deserved.

The number two pick was Verlander. My how things could have been different.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 7:25 PM PST up reply actions

The worst part (for the Padres)

is that Bush got a bonus of $3.15m, while Verlander got only a $3.12m bonus picked #2.

Verlander did get a major league contract, but still Bush will go down as one of the worst picks ever.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:34 PM PST up reply actions

Two off days before Cleveland

Kobe doesn’t need that much rest damnit.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:24 PM PST reply actions

They have managed to stay even in 3:20 with Kobe on the bench, but he needs to play the rest of the game.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:25 PM PST up reply actions

How many layups do they want to give up?

I need to calm down. And another before I can even finish typing!

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 7:24 PM PST reply actions

Tyler Perry

Has he been associated with anything remotely close to funny?

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:25 PM PST reply actions

I guess it doesn't matter if Kobe's in or not

if the Celtics get a free pass to the basket every trip down.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:28 PM PST reply actions

Exactly

We settle for jumpers and they end up getting layups. They’re too physical for the Lakers without Bynum. It will take some luck to pull this one out.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 7:32 PM PST up reply actions

If they miss another FT

I might throw the channel changer. Or give up too many more easy layups. :(

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 7:34 PM PST reply actions

Sigh.

Defense optional. I guess Kobe will need to keep hitting those.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

Lakers got a break

with KG’s 6th foul. Leave it to Fisher to draw the foul.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:39 PM PST reply actions

Kobe!

It’s a 3-minute game

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:42 PM PST reply actions

Damnit Gasol!

This is why people say you’re soft!

Go to the hoop strong, and stop trying to draw a foul while protecting your vagina.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:50 PM PST reply actions

Woah

Thats some anger right there. I just yelled at him.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 7:51 PM PST up reply actions

I guess we just have to hope

that Allen or House miss their three this time down.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:51 PM PST reply actions

Damn

We get a Big Baby jumper, and can’t get that rebound either.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:52 PM PST reply actions

Just to clarify

in case anyone reads this later. I was celebrating Pierce missing the FT not Kobe missing his shot. These things can be confusing. ;-)

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 7:57 PM PST up reply actions

Don't worry

These will be annotated later. :)

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:58 PM PST up reply actions

Not the best shot by Kobe

and it was too early in the shot clock.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:53 PM PST reply actions

No reason to take that.

Pass the ball, it won’t give you cancer. That’s a very low percentage shot.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 7:54 PM PST up reply actions

Paul Pierce or Seal?

Who has been stabbed in the face more?

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 7:59 PM PST reply actions

I'd rather have Ariza instead of Walton

actually, I’d rather have anyone in there than Walton.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 8:01 PM PST reply actions

Kobe fouled Pierce

AND they screwed up the 2.5 on 1 break.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 8:03 PM PST reply actions

Again

please guard Allen and House.

Well, and Pierce and Rondo.

I hope Big Baby misses this open 16 footer.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 8:09 PM PST reply actions

no rebounding, again.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 8:10 PM PST reply actions

Gasol!

I take back the vag comment!

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 8:12 PM PST reply actions

The best

is being able to hear the fans courtside yelling at the refs.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 8:13 PM PST reply actions

They didn't even touch him.

The Celtics play physical all game and then cmplain about that.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 8:14 PM PST up reply actions

Upon the replay

Fisher was on Allen, but with the way the game was called, no way that should get called.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 8:15 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah he had his hand on him.

But that would be soooo ticky-tack after the game was played. And nobody touched him on the shot.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 8:16 PM PST up reply actions

Not even close to a foul

I can’t wait to hear Bill Simmons’ whining about this game in a column and/or podcast.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 5, 2009 8:14 PM PST reply actions

Agreed

You can’t make a ticky-tack call like that to decide the game.

by Brendan Scolari on Feb 5, 2009 8:15 PM PST up reply actions

Well, they're a bit bitter over there at CelticsBlog.

I got a warning for being a Lakers fan, I guess? They don’t take too well to opposing fans’ discourse.
