We have a name!

PBP announcer is Joe Block.

Didn’t Steve Lyons call him “Jim” yesterday?

by Eric Stephen on Mar 13, 2009 1:02 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

More info

on Joe Block here. He is a NO Hornets studio host, and works for Comcast as well.

X. Ethier

Very nice, with the story of Ethier wearing that on his BP jersey today (his mother’s maiden initial), toying with Russell “J” Martin a bit.

Lyons doesn't know boxing

Rangers’ leadoff man Duran got on, and Lyons said he shouldn’t have the same nickname as the boxer with the same last name (referencing Roberto Duran). Lyons cited the nickname “Hands of Steel.” It was “hands of stone,” or “manos de piedra” if you prefer.

Umpire Frank Drebin

the 2-strike pitch to Michael Young was right down the middle, yet was called a ball, as if the Queen would be killed if the inning ended.

by Eric Stephen on Mar 13, 2009 1:11 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Hamilton

tatooed that one to deep, deep center.

Spring stats

Who knows how much they will come into play, but Hiroki Kuroda’s opening day case just got stronger in Joe Torre’s eyes with those back to back bombs off Chad.

by Eric Stephen on Mar 13, 2009 1:13 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

there is still 3 weeks left....

is chad just working on a certain few pitches or is he throwing all his stuff??? my video is still loading…

by Big Blue on Mar 13, 2009 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not 100% sure

but i believe they were both fastballs, especially Hamilton’s shot to CF.

Oh well

Time for the main attraction. Manny is coming up!!!

im sure there will be more than one around town

You can tell Manny is back

since the crowd got excited just for him to get in the on deck circle.

Makes everyone better

I can’t wait for opening day. chavez is going to be rocking.

I suggest rubber chickens

for the intentional walks. :)

Lineup

With martin in there, our offense should be potent.

by Big Blue on Mar 13, 2009 1:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

20 years old in the bigs....

half a season would even do him some good

by Big Blue on Mar 13, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

It seems they are jumping the gun a bit with him. His offensive projections for this year are awful. Why start the service clock early for someone who can’t hit, even if he is great at fielding, especially for a team with no chance to make the playoffs.

by Eric Stephen on Mar 13, 2009 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Rangers have a shot at the playoffs.

Granted, not a great one, but they probably have about the same odds as the Rockies do of winning the NL West.

Perfect setup

by Chad. Up and in twice — the last with a slider that got away from him — then a perfect curve on the outside corner to finish off Duran.

bills settled down a lot

im glad to see his leg isn’t hampering him… I hope he goes 4 today.

by Big Blue on Mar 13, 2009 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Me too. I forget, I think Wolf got pulled in the 4th and I don’t think Kuroda went 4 IP. Let’s hope Chad can be the first one to do so.

Lyons mentioned 4 IP or 60 pitches, but I think he was just speculating.

by Eric Stephen on Mar 13, 2009 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Andruw

Lyons called Andruw’s 2008 the worst ever in major league history with 200 “at bats.” By OPS+, he was only 99th worst.

In terms of performance to expectations, though, Andruw may have been worst.

by Eric Stephen on Mar 13, 2009 1:51 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Doing some math

Paid him $14,726,910 last year
Played in 75 games…. That’s $196,358.80 per game
Had 14 RBIs…. That’s $1,051,922.14 per RBI
Had 3 home runs…. That’s $4,908,970 per home run

For everything else, there manny….

by Big Blue on Mar 13, 2009 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Speaking of Manny

since we only paid him a $1 million bonus since he was traded, let’s combine the numbers.

I’m using $14.1 milion as the cost for Andruw, so $15.1m total:

128 games: $117,969 per game
67 RBI: $225,373 per RBI
20 HR: $755,000 per HR

Much more palatable. :)

by Eric Stephen on Mar 13, 2009 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So much for 4 IP :)

Chad pulled in the 3rd. Most likely due to pitch count.

I’d like to commend Chad today for having the wherewithal to want to work on pitching from the stretch. :)

by Eric Stephen on Mar 13, 2009 1:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Haha

Yeah seemed to love having the first person get on base.

I'm still kicking myself for missing the 6 OT game

I was busy playing a marathon session of Rock Band.

Sorry

I meant Rock Band 2. Kicked as at Everlong, Alive, White Wedding, Any Way You Want It, etc.

We have yet to unlock

Carry On (Wayward Son) by Kansas or Tangled Up in Blue by Dylan. I desperately want to sing those songs. :)

Really?

Pitching around guys in spring training? Isn’t that what spring training is for, to work on things?

Kind of like the checks from Topps

for $5 they give minor leaguers for their “rights” to be put on cards. They are more symbolic but Matt McCarthy — “Odd Man Out” — and some Provo teammates cashed them. :)

How was that book?

I wanted to read it, never got around to it.

by Big Blue on Mar 13, 2009 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I loved it

I’ve been meaning to review it here, but I’m torn. What I loved about it was the narrative. With the recent news that many of the facts were innacurate — some minor, some major — I am hesitant to write about it. However, I still loved the tone and overall message of the book, despite the inaccuracies.

Alex Belth of Bronx Banter has a wonderful recap of the facts from both sides here.

by Eric Stephen on Mar 13, 2009 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

How come he’s not getting any love?

by Big Blue on Mar 13, 2009 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He wants Andrus

to make the club so he can get him out when we face the Rangers later this year and J-Mac is starting.

by Eric Stephen on Mar 13, 2009 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I blame Bowa

He should have sent the runner instead of holding him at 3B. That screwed Furcal up

MLB Network

I love the minute or so highlight package sometimes run by MLB Network basically showing a ton of highlights from baseball history. It gets me going every time.

The “Where Amazing Happens” campaign was/is sweet.

From the box score

McDonald 2.0 1 H 0 R 0 ER 4 bb 2 so 0 HR

So he had no control but eventually got everyone out

by Big Blue on Mar 13, 2009 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope this

doesn’t hamper Joe Block’s campaign to become the announcer! :)
