Piazza vs. Bench vs. Pudge
Sky Kalkman, of SB Nation's own excellent Beyond The Box Score, wrote a terrific breakdown of three all-time great catchers for The Hardball Times. Kalkman used the recently released historical WAR Database from Sean Smith, creator of the CHONE projection system and Angels blogger.
What's interesting to me is that Mike Piazza's offensive advantage over Johnny Bench is equal to Bench's defensive advantage over Piazza. And Pudge II holds up better that I thought in comparison to the two. Give this article a read when you get a chance.

Offensive
numbers are quantifiable. Defensive Catching metrics? Curious to see how the historical great subjective defensive catchers like Yeager, Sundberg, Grote rate.
Some numbers
Pudge II +152
Sundberg +114
Bench +97 runs above replacement on defense
Yeager +70
Grote +21
Piazza -67

I love it.
I’m not a big fan of career WAR, though. 6 WAR, to me, is much more impressive than three 2 WAR seasons.

Hey Eric
Is our Braves’ second rounder concrete at #56? I don’t think Byrd or Gruds will sign with anyone.
So that means we’ve got:
36
56
65
Correct me if I’m wrong, please.
Yeah
If Byrd, Grudz, and Sheets all go unsigned before the draft, those are our picks.
