Beware The Ides of March Game Thread
Rockies (6-10) & Dodgers (10-6), 1:05pm
Et tu, Garate? The Rockies make a visit to Camelback Ranch to face the Dodgers today, in what is expected to be Manny Ramirez's first game in the field. At the very lease, if Manny doesn't play in LF he will start at DH. What a perfect time to be televised by KCAL. Two weeks without Vin Scully is far too long. The game will also be on MLB.tv for those that subscribe to that service.
Russell Martin played Thursday and Saturday, and since he is operating on an every other day schedule right now, he will have Sunday off. Also out are non-roster invitees Doug Mientkiewicz -- his injured quad might keep him out more than a week -- and reliever Erick Threets.
Claudio Vargas Eric Milton gets the call to start for the Dodgers.
Jorge De La Rosa will start on the mound for Colorado.

Vin's memory
He said Colorado won the West in 2007.
They were actually the Wild Card, winning a classic tie breaker against SD.
I wonder what Vin does during Spring
now that the club is in Arizona, and he is only doing a few Sunday games. Does he stay home in LA during the week and fly in on weekends?
My money is on at least 11
I should have been keeping count, but I’ve been flipping back and forth between this and the Lakers/Mavs game.

Not to channel Abe Simpson
but Eric Milton’s hair is a bit too shaggy for my tastes.
Then again, I like Manny’s (although I would prefer a fro!). Go figure.
go Stults
I’m sorta happy that Milton gave up 4. I’m rooting for Stults
I like it
You should post it here too.
In the next couple of weeks, we will make a push to get more projections from everyone and I’ll tally them up (much like last year on DT).

I have to admit
I enjoy seeing guys like Milton and Estes fail. These NRIs are nothing more than Scott Erickson redux.
Just for fun
Milton’s spring ERA: 5.40, in 11.2 IP (including today)
FIP (roughly): 5.09
I don’t want Milton on the team, but it’s not because of what he did this spring, but rather his track record over the last few years. My preference for 5th starter:
1) McDonald
2) Pedro
3) Stults
4) Schmidt
5) use a 4-man rotation. :)
Not feeling Pedro
Because if Schmidt every comes back, will they be obligated to start both of them?
By the time Schmidt is ready to start
Kershaw will be entrenched in the rotation by then.

Poor San Diego
didn’t even make the CarMax text question “Who will be the Dodgers’ toughest competition in the NL West?”
mlb.tv beta player
So I’m watching the Cuba vs Japan game and the quality is awesome
Behind home plate
I see the black screen is at the base of the fence, as it was in the White Sox game yesterday. So it wasn’t just a White Sox thing.
If I was an NBA coach
I would fine players for slapping five in between free throws; double for a miss.
Jon Lester's Contract Details
Last weekend I speculated Lester’s contract details here:
I still haven’t seen the breakdown of Lester’s contract but it might be something like this:
3rd year – $500k
1st arb yr – $3.5m
2nd arb yr – $5.5m
3rd arb yr – $8.5m
1st FA yr – $11m
2nd FA yr – $13m option ($1m buyout) — this amount has been reported, but I assumed the buyout
Actual breakdown:
2009 – $1m
2010 – $3.75m
2011 – $5.75m
2012 – $7.625m
2013 – $11.625m
2014 – $13m buyout ($250k buyout)
3/15 Dodgers vs Rockies
Dodgers really delivered today
man I felt sorry for those fans in the $100- seats behind the plate ….
you gotta bet they had already put the game in the ‘W’ column when they bought their tickets too.
Spring training
1) the seats are $90, not $100
2) it’s spring training…the games don’t count.

It was a "Premium Game" today
I believe the tickets were indeed $100 today in the three sections behind home plate. The cheapest seats in the house, the lawn, was still twice as expensive as the cheapest seats at Coors Field in the regular season.
That said, Camelback is an extremely impressive venue. I am insanely jealous. It is truly an event to attend a game there….it really feels liek Disneyworld for baseball fans

Ks
My feeling is that our top quartet will deliver approx. 700 Ks for the season. Without looking at past history, would that be considered well above average?
700 would be awesome
The Cubs as an entire staff (bullpen included) have led the majors in K/9 for something like 8 straight seasons. It’s a ridiculous run for them. I took a look at their starters the last few years and these are their K totals:
2008: 786 Ks
2007: 735
2006: 697
2005: 800 (!)
2004: 917 (!!!)
2003: 987 (!!!!!)
2002: 894
2001: 837
So getting 700 from just our top 4 starters would be pretty damn good, at the very least above average I think. Let’s look at the starting staffs in MLB in 2008:
1) AZ 849
2) SF 829
3) Tor 828
4) ChC 786
5) NYM 771
15) Phi 670
16) Hou 667
I think 700 Ks from just the top 4 would mean we have at least 100 more from the rest of the starters putting us over 800 and in the top 4 at least.
So yet, well above average.

Just to add
I think 700 is the upper limit for our top 4. I think they are somewhere in between 600-650 when it’s all said and done:
Bills 190
Clay K 175
Wolf 150
Kuroda 130
700 isn’t out of the question of course, and it cheers me up just thinking about the possibility! :)
