Is Curt Schilling a Hall of Famer?

Curt Schilling retired from baseball today.  He was never a Dodger, and he certainly did his best to beat their heads in over his career:  14-6, 2.82 ERA, 216 K in 210.2 IP.

Is he a Hall of Famer?  A quick look at his resume:

  • 127 Career ERA+ in 3261 IP (43rd all-time)
  • 11-2 with a 2.23 ERA in 19 postseason starts (including 4-1, 2.06 in the World Series)
  • 216-146 lifetime record (.597 win %)
  • Four top-four Cy Young finishes, including three top twos
  • From 1996 to 2004, Schilling had a 141 ERA+, 6th best in MLB during that period

I vote yes for the HOF.  What about you?

Dodgers Cash In Against Penny

Sure

but so is Bert Blyleven so how can I say yes when the better pitcher is still on the outside looking in?

Not mutually exclusive

A vote for Schilling isn’t a non-vote for Blyleven. Either he is a HOFer or not. Assume your ballot doesn’t already have 9 other names on it so you don’t have to choose Curt or Bert. :)

re:

Okay, I voted yes but I sense an anti Boston theme here on True Blue.

He probably deserves to go in

but I really hate him as a person.

probably, but I really hate him as a person.

good point

Depends...

I would put him in the Hall Of Very Good along with Blyleven and Mussina and about 10-15 others who are already in the HOF, but those are just my personal standards.

Based on the qualifications of those who are already in the HOF, yeah sure, why not?

The writers will vote him in just because the bloody sock. Blood and Grit = HOF

My head just exploded

when Jon Heyman of SI come on MLB.TV and said “I throw out the numbers when considering the HOF and just consider impact”. He’s Scott Boras’s whore and and an idiot. I hate that I care about the HOF when the people who decide are morons.

It's really frustrating

to hear that. You would hope the voters would take the time to care as much as we do about these things, or at least do more that seat of the pants HOF picking.

Buster Olney on ESPN

just said he would vote for Schilling, but not for Blyleven because “he didn’t have the spikes of dominance that Schilling had.”

150 ERA+ seasons
Schilling 3
Blyleven 2

140 ERA+ seasons
Blyleven 5
Schilling 5

Best 9 year stretch
Schilling (1999-2004) 143 ERA+
Blyleven (1973-1978) 137 ERA+

Blyleven was 5-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 6 postseason starts (plus two more relief appearances)

No spikes of dominance my ass
