Pee Wee Walks The Plank
Delwyn Young, who was designated for assignment Monday, has been traded to the Pirates. Tony Jackson tells us the Dodgers will receive two players to be named later, presumably minor leaguers.
Young hit .267/.331/.394 as a Dodger with a 89 OPS+ in 110 career games.
Last year, Ronald Belisario was in the Pirates' farm system and Young was of course a Dodger. In 2009, who will have the biggest impact on their respective new club?

Belisario
is the only way I can spin anything positive out of DY’s demise.

Essentially
This is Belly for DY, which might be a clear win for us if we got a younger version of Saito.
Xavier Paul still raking in AAA
I’m thinking he’s a big trade chip on 7/31. If he can play an solid CF, this is a very good prospect.
I don't see it.
He’s already 24 and doesn’t even have a career .800 OPS in the minors. Not a lot of power and only decent plate discipline. He’s a 3rd/4th outfielder to me.

Can we just pretend
that we traded Pee Wee for Belisario at least and then I’ll feel less bummed out about losing Delwyn?
Silver, I hope XPaul isn’t a trade chip because they don’t have much other OF depth in the minors right now, so if anyone gets hurt on the ML roster who do they go with? Repko? Lambo’s not ready yet… I’d rather keep him as insurance.
I don't think Paul is a trade chip
He wouldn’t have that much value anyways.

He has some value as a throw in a larger deal.
A outfielder who can hit, and play all 3 outfield positions? He’s certainly could be part of a prospect package.
C'mon
A major league ready OF with speed, a GREAT arm, and CF ability is prime trade material. You’re right that he may not fetch anything really special, but he’s no slouch.

I don't mean to say he's worth nothing.
But we’re talking about the 3rd/4th best prospect in a big deal at best. He’s not going to be a headliner in any deal for significant talent.

Fair enough
I just think he’s a bit more than a thrown-in. For example, a mid-to-upper pitching prospect + Paul could get something good, perhaps.

Well, it depends.
What do you mean when you say “something good”? Is that Jake Peavy or a Casey Blake Ned Special™?

Young was traded to Pittsburgh on Tuesday for two players to be named later, the Dodgers’ official site reports.
Recommendation: The players are rumored to be Pedro Alvarez and Andrew McCutcheon. Just kidding. Seriously though, Young can hit, but his lack of defensive versatility left him expendable in an organization with four superior (okay, three then) outfield options. He’ll be a pinch-hitter and backup corner outfielder in Pittsburgh. He could eventually have some NL-only playing time, but we’ll have to first see how he’s used.

You keep Paul...
…because he’s potentially a cost-controlled, play all 3 outfield positions, 4th outfielder. Everything Juan Pierre is not.
The value you get for him isn’t going to be equal unless he starts doing roids and hits 20 HR in the first half of the year. :o
