Martin is Marvelous - April 23rd Minor League Update

Ethan Martin keeps building on his 2009 season as he notched his 3rd straight win. He's only gone five innings in each start but the results have been outstanding. 15 innings, only nine hits, and 19 K's with a sparkling 0.60 ERA. Ethanmartin_medium

Star-divide

Isotopes:
Shutout 6 - 0 wasting an excellent effort by Shawn Estes who fanned nine in five innings of work. Jason Repko saw his batting average fall yet again and is not doing what he needs to do to stay a head of Paul and Hoffman in the outfield depth chart. Look for Repko to get bounced from the 40 man if we need that spot.

Chattanooga Lookouts:
Lookouts lose 2 - 1 as Lambo/Hoffman/Bell combine to go 1 for 12.

Inland Empire 66ers
Lose 5 - 3 as Tim Sexton had excellent command but gave up four runs on six hits. Greg Miller has now made six appearances without giving up a hit or walk. Before you go throwing confetti into the sky we should point out that he's only pitched 2.1 innings in those six appearances. Right now he is the ultimate definition of a loogy.

Great Lake Loons
Loons are on fire as they win fourth straight 10 - 0" behind the pitching of Martin/Garcia and hitting of Pedroza and Russel.

Martin is our #1 prospect

As of this moment. That can change at any time, but for someone with very little pitching experience, what he’s doing is bedazzling.

Even with missing rookie ball last year he’s on the exact same path as Clayton. What are the odds he skips the Cal league and jumps to AA late in the rookie season like Kershaw did?

I would prefer the Billingsley path

1st full year: A/AA split
2nd full year: AA
3rd full year: AAA/majors split

Yes, I’m in no hurry to see him next year.

I like pitching...

but I think we need to start getting some elite bats down on the farm. Lambo, Russell, and Gallagher are a good start, but when was the last time we had an elite bat in the pipeline? Kemp?

I think it is harder to find that elite hitter from where we draft compared to the pitchers where Logan feasts on high school pitchers as other GM’s still fear to tread.

That's a good point

It’s like HS pitchers are/were the “new” market inneficiency.
