Around SBN: How The Kings Beat The Coyotes: Lather, Rinse, Repeat

Dave Cameron of Fangraphs speculates that Andruw Jones may have found his stroke again. It's a small sample size, only 35 plate appearances, but Andruw is hitting .370/.514/.778 with a 7/6 BB/K ratio. He's also got 7 extra base hits in 9 games, despite only having 12 in 75 games last year.

Do they have scounts in the American league?

Can’t figure out if American league pitchers are thinking he’s the early 2000s jones and trying to do to much and get behind the count or the 2008 jones and pitching him too easy. Either way I’m sure Texas will come to know and love the same train wreck that we did in no time. This will just make it all the more devastating for them..

Doubt it, the hitting coach worked hard with him and recognized that his bat speed was back and lobbied hard for Texas to find a spot for him on the roster. He may never be what he what was but Texas is picking their spots and that may be his future, a LHP masher.

Very small sample size but of the 138 pitches he has seen thus far

He has only swung and missed on 12 of them. The other thing is until 2008, Jones did most of his damage pulling the ball, his average on balls hit to left, from 2002-2007, a .357 BABIP (I don’t have a breakout of his slugging). He was a left/center field hitter, but over 56% of his balls in play went to left field. (Manny Ramirez is probably around 41-42% over that same period).

In 2008, he had a .222 BABIP to balls hit to left field. He had also dropped in 2007 too.

Yes

He always was a dead pull hitter, but last year he hardly ever pulled it with any authority (of course he didn’t make contact too often anyways). Wondering, where did you get those stats? They’re very cool.

Brendan

I got them from BillJamesOnline.net, its a $3 or $4 a month subscription (i can’t remember which). I seem to think that Hardball Times has something similar.

One of many differences you saw with Manny tonight, although he can pull the ball with the best of them, he really is a hit them where they pitch you player.

Two things

He has more at bats against righties but he is killing lefties a little more (1.10 OPS against RH, 1.5 against LH).

The main thing that has helped, absolutely killing it at home in Texas vs. his Road stats.

Speaking of Andruw

He’s batting cleanup for the Rangers tonight against Oakland lefty Brett Anderson. So far he’s 0-1 with a K and 2 walks.
