Dodgers Announce Opening Day Roster

The Dodgers announced 96% of their opening day 25-man roster today, which technically can be changed before tomorrow's 4:05pm game in San Diego.  Here is the roster:

Catchers (2)
Russell Martin, Brad Ausmus

Infielders (6)
James Loney, Orlando Hudson, Rafael Furcal, Casey Blake, Mark Loretta, Blake DeWitt

Outfielders (5)
Manny Ramirez, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Juan Pierre, Delwyn Young

Starting Pitchers (5)
Hiroki Kuroda, Randy Wolf, Chad Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw, James McDonald

Relievers (6)
Jonathan Broxton, Hong Chih-Kuo, Guillermo Mota, Cory Wade, Claudio Vargas, Ramon Troncoso

Disabled List (1)
Jason Schmidt

This is a very weird announcement by the Dodgers, as Young and Vargas are expected to go on the DL.  Also, Will Ohman and Doug Mientkiewicz will almost assuredly be added before tomorrow's game, but a corresponding roster move will need to be made to accommodate one of those spots.  In other words, there's 27 hours to decide what those moves will be.

Final 2 bullpen spots

per Bill Shaikin of the Times, is between Troncoso, Lindblom, Belisario, and Threets.

Loving this velocity

Even if the gun is a bit juiced.

Kind of like the outside the box thinking

Giants are having Sandoval, their starting 3B, as the lone backup catcher on their roster. Will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Its a bad idea

because they might carry 6 outfielders. That makes no sense. And since Molina is the slowest guy in the league he needs to be pinch run for a lot.

Giants trivia question

Their AFLAC trivia was who was the youngest SF Giant pitcher to start on opening day. My guess was Juan Marichal. I was off by 5 days, to a future CYA winner.

Lincecum will end up 3rd youngest on this list.

Lindblom looks great.

When he’s missing, he’s missing right off the edge of the plate. Also, I didn’t expect his stuff to be quite this good. Not sure if the Giants’ gun is juiced, but he’s hitting 95-96 a lot. Also, his curveball has a ton of break.

We'll see

I don’t want to put those kind of expectations on him, because then we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment. He definitely looks deserbing of more hype than he’s gotten though.

Diamond Leung brings the news

filling in for Tony Jackson:

Eye Chart
Troncoso
Belisario
Ohman

Lindblom to AA (to start — a good thing!)
No Castro (a great thing!)

Two spots need to be cleared to create space for the 3 non-roster guys (Ohman, Eye Chart, Belisario). More info as we find out.

quick question, eric

who is this belisario guy?

Dodgers - 2008 NL West Champions
Cardinals - 2008 NFC Champions

Belisario = power arm

Career minor leaguer that one of our scouts discovered in Venezuela this winter. GREAT fastball. Also heard about some possible attitude issues, so we’ll see how it goes.
