Dodgers Hope to Give Silva a Rude Welcome

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres, Apr 8, 2009 7:05 PM PDT

After opening the season with their two aces Jake Peavy and Chris Young, the Padres are starting 32-year old Walter Silva, making his first major league start after years of pitching in the Mexican Winter League.  Tony Jackson of the Daily News has some details of his rise from Baldwin Park semipro to Major League starting pitcher.  The Dodgers have been far too kind to pitchers making their first major league starts.  In the past nine such instances, dating back to 2001, the Dodgers are 2-7:

Pitcher Team IP H ER BB K Result
Wade Leblanc SD 4.0 8 5 3 1 Dodgers win, 6-4
Chris Volstad Fla 8.2 5 1 1 6 L, 1-3
Eddie Bonine Det 5.1 9 6 0 2 L, 7-12
Jack Cassel SD 5.2 10 3 1 5 L, 4-6
Franklin Morales Col 5.1 5 1 0 4 L, 4-7
John Koronka ChC 5.0 6 3 3 4 L, 5-9
Brad Halsey NYY 5.2 5 2 1 3 L, 2-6
Ben Hendrickson Mil 5.0 7 4 2 2 W, 5-2
Jason Middlebrook    SD 6.0 2 1 4 2 L, 4-6
Totals 50.2 57 26 15 29 4.62 ERA

Outside of maybe Chris Volstad last season, none of these pitchers really had their way with the Dodgers, but the Dodgers have just been unlucky as a team in these games.

However, the Dodgers have their best weapon to combat this bad luck in the form of their best pitcher, Chad Billingsley. This would be a good time for Chad to start his drive to become another Dodger pitcher to finish 2nd in the Cy Young vote.

Don't forget to make your game score guess for todays game up until game time. Yesterday's winner was the Xeifrank who was the only one to pick the Padres. We boo him for his dastardly deed, but praise him for his prescient pick.

Eric

Nope

I’m back home now. I had a follow up dentist appointment (gum surgery follow up) so I had the pleasure of 4.5 hours of driving for one 30 minute appointment. The appointment was at 2pm, and by leaving right when I was done I got to avoid traffic getting home.

That, and going to the game requires money.

Rude Welcome

I am heavily against any rude welcomings to Silva. How about the Dodgers just cordially shell him.

The only good thing to come of that post

is that “don’t you ever get your information straight before you post” could be comedic gold for the next day or two, much like the DT guy (“I Love LA”??) who told Jon if he didn’t like his tone he should get his own blog.

Plus, if anything, she should have ripped the spelling of “Edmounds.” That was even different from how you normally misspell it! :)

Speaking of Silva

Bud Black gives us a scouting report:

"I saw an 89-90 fastball, tight slider and a good change and a good curve," Black said. "There were a number of teams on him (including the Yankees). That said, he has to locate and execute."

I love the Silva story. I’ll root for him; just not tonight. Nice to see anyone with any sort of desert ties make it to the big time.

by the big grabowski on Apr 8, 2009 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Enough of a speed difference?

Most of Silva’s fastballs were 89 (one was 91).

He threw two changeups, one at 81 and one at 83. That seems like too small a difference in speed to be effective. Maybe 89 to 81 is OK, but only 6 MPH seems like it could cause problems for SIlva.

Or perhaps I’m reading too much into this.

I Agree

Apparently

Hudson smoked that ball. Hardest hit of the game since at least the 4th (That’s when I’ve been watching).

by Brendan Scolari on Apr 8, 2009 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Really?

I didn’t think so. Hudson’s was just lower so it didn’t go as far.

I talked to Andrew today, BTW. He said he’ll try to make it back when he can. Work is destroying his social life, apparently. But he can’t stay away from Brad Ausmus forever.

The shift is in Adrian's head!

aka it’s working, not only with fielding presence, but psychologically as well.

by Eric Stephen on Apr 8, 2009 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

It helped him once yesterday.

On that ball to Blake. But I agree it seems to be bothering him and it has worked other than that.

for “Most Progressed,” at least in discernible results.

So who'll be here for tomorrow's afternoon game?

It’s my birthday*, so I’ll be darned if I let work stop me from checking in now and then.

and as a present, I’m on your question.

by Eric Stephen on Apr 8, 2009 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ll be here, but at work, so I’ll be watching on gameday.

by the big grabowski on Apr 8, 2009 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Happy birthday, sir

On your birthdate, Bob Welch shutout the Padres, with the only run coming in when Mike Marshall drove in Bill Madlock in the 4th.

On April 9 from 1986 to present, the Dodgers are 13-7, outscoring their opponents 88-66 (a pythag % of .640).

Was going to buy the

The last 2 have been good

I was suspicious for awhile this season but have enjoyed the last 2 a lot

by Big Blue on Apr 8, 2009 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't think the last one was that good.

You knew Ben wouldn’t die so it wasn’t that exciting.

by Brendan Scolari on Apr 8, 2009 10:10 PM PDT up reply actions

It seems like you either loved the Kate episode or hated it....

Yeah, I don’t want to say anything to get anyone mad, but tonights was cool

by Big Blue on Apr 8, 2009 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I didn't find the flashbacks that great either.

A lot of it was just recap. I don’t know, I still liked watching it a lot, but compared to other LOST episodes, I didn’t think it was great.

by Brendan Scolari on Apr 8, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Last one was merely ok, but I think that was because it was a Kate episode, which are generally weak, and it was fairly mythology-lite.
