Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

Minor League Opening Day Assignments

I took the liberty of compiling this list showing where our prospects will be opening the year. I used the Baseball America Top 30 as a guide and threw in some other notables as well.

1. Andrew Lambo: Double A - Chattanooga

2. James McDonald: Los Angeles Dodgers

3. Ethan Martin: Low Class A - Great Lakes

4 . Josh Lindblom: Double A - Chattanooga

5. Scott Elbert: Double A - Chattanooga

6. Ivan DeJesus: Injuried - Broken Leg

7. Devaris Gordon: Low Class A - Great Lakes

8. Josh Bell: Double A - Chattanooga

9. Chris Withrow: Class A Advanced - Inland Empire

10. Josh Bell: Double A - Chattanooga

11. Austin Gallagher: Low Class A - Great Lakes

12. Ramon Troncoso: Los Angeles Dodgers

13. Pedro Baez: Class A Advanced - Inland Empire

14. Travis Schlichting: Triple A - Albuquerque

15. Steven Johnson: Class A Advanced - Inland Empire

16. Xavier Paul: Triple A - Albuquerque

17. Kyle Russell: Low Class A - Great Lakes

18. Jon Michael Redding: Low Class A - Great Lakes

19. Tony Delmonico: Low Class A - Great Lakes

20. Justin Miller: Low Class A - Great Lakes

21. Brent Leach: Double A - Chattanooga

22. Jamie Hoffman: Double A - Chattanooga

23. Daigoro Rondon: Class A Advanced - Inland Empire

24. Victor Garate: Double A - Chattanooga

25. Javy Guerra : Low Class A - Great Lakes

26. James Adkins: Double A - Chattanooga

27. Alfredo Silverio: Low Class A - Great Lakes

28. Lucas May: Double A - Chatanooga

29. Josh Wall: Class A Advanced - Inland Empire

30. Jordan Pratt: Low Class A - Great Lakes

Other Notables

Jamie Pedroza: Low Class A - Great Lakes

Greg Miller: Class A Advanced - Inland Empire

Justin Orenduff: Class A Advanced - Inland Empire

Timothy Sexton: Class A Adanced - Inland Empire

Preston Mattingly: Class A Advanced - Inland Empire

Trayvon Robinson: Class A Advanced - Inland Empire

Notes:

Some surprises to me are Pedroza and Gallagher being placed in the Midwest League after completing a full season in the Cali League, although the Midwest League is a tough league (Carlos Santana stuggled in this league). The Great Lakes team has a ton of talent and will be a fun one to watch.

Found it intereseting that Orenduff and Miller, two prospects who have lost their way have been sent down all the way to Class A Advanced.

Great

stuff from both you guys. Here is some information on why the Loons are being loaded up this season.

From Hugh Bernreuter who covers the Loons for the Saginaw News told me this during a recent correspondence.

At the end of last year, the Loons and Dodgers met because their two-year agreement was to expire. I believe there were some voices raised in those meetings. The Loons have a brand new stadium and state-of-the-art facilities, yet the Dodgers were supplying a less-than stellar crop of prospects. I believe the Dodgers, who were new to the Midwest League, understimated the league. While it is a Low A league, it is also a more experienced league. The Dodgers were sending 19 and 20 year old kids with little experience, while other teams were fielding teams with 22-24 year-old college kids. It appears as though the Dodgers are doing everything this
year to help the Loons win. It also appears that they have reevaluated their philosophy about Single A. Several players who could not make it with the Loons are now assigned to Advanced A Inland Empire.

He has some solid insight on last years team and this year. Very shortly we hope to do a live chat with him to discuss the players he saw last year, and the players he’s seen this year.

Baseball America has a great Dee Gordon story up but it is behind the pay site. I’ll put out a few paragraphs this Sunday from the story. Dee confirms that the Dodgers really want to focus on winning at Great Lakes this year.

Very interesting

The added talent with the experience with the older, post college players should make competition in the Midwest League very competitive. When I was doing the roster write up, I was wondering why they made a special note of the older age of the team.

The Loons have never had as many Top 10 draft picks or BA Top 30 players at any time on their roster.
The Loons have 13 players older than 22 years old, a new opening day record.

It is reverse thinking that some of the players that are the “high-a” 66ers could not cut it on “low-A” Loons. Looks like the Dodgers had same preconceived notion about the league as I did…… It is all making sense and I look forward to following them this season.

Gordon

Saw that story on Gordon and it is a great read. Sounds like a really competitive kid, I’m anxious to follow his progress during the year.

Also just want to add

That it is awesome that both of you used the fanpost for this stuff. I’ll promote it to the front page tomorrow but I don’t want it to get lost in the game thread that will be kicking in a few hours. More and more it looks like I just need to help manage the site as most of the work is being done by everyone else.

No problem Phil. I love following and tracking prospects so anything I can do to help out the site in that regard, let me know.

You guys seem to have the big club pretty well covered!

miller

It would be nice to see him figure it out on the backside of the desert (literally) and get back in the mix. He seems to still have his velocity if he can get his command back.

Oops

  1. is supposed to be Nathan Eovaldi and he is starting the season in Great Lakes, another talented player with that club.

Cole St. Clair

One other guy I wanted to list in the Notable section was Cole St. Clair. He closed in Ogden last year and was a pretty highly touted guy coming out of Rice who fell in the draft because of an injury that kind of messed up his last season in College. I couldn’t find him anywhere.

Pitchers out of Rice seem to always get hurt once they turn professional and since he’s coming off an injury, so my guess is the Dodgers are keeping him in extended Spring till it gets a little warmer, then they’ll send him to Great Lakes. That will be another talented arm on that squad!

Opening Day Tonight

Redding going for the Loons
Castillo going for the Chattanooga
Bastardo going for Inland

AA will hopefully have quite a rotation with Castillo/Elbert/Lindbloom/Adkins

Bastardo

is another reason to see a 66ers game, if only for the name. :)
