Around SBN: How The Kings Beat The Coyotes: Lather, Rinse, Repeat

Baseball Prospectus prospect guru Kevin Goldstein has a writeup on recently promoted outfiielder Xavier Paul. In the writeup Goldstein describes Paul as a player with no plus tools other than his arm, but no minus tools either.

Goldstein concludes, "As an outfielder who can play all three positions, hit a little bit and run well, Paul certainly has big league value, but left-handers have always been an issue for him (he’s just 4-for-26 against them this year) so he’ll always need a platoon partner. He’s no Manny, but he helps plug the whole created by his suspension a bit."

John Sickels also chimes in at Minor League Ball saying, "I don't think he will show enough home run power to be a regular corner guy, but I could see him having a very long career as a fourth outfielder and platoon player." Sickels also reviews Eric Milton and Chin-Lung Hu in this post.

Here is the daily callup report from Baseball HQ on Xavier Paul

The 24 year-old is the benefactor of Manny Ramirez’s suspension. Paul, an athletic left-handed hitter, had a strong spring that catapulted him to the top of the minor league outfield depth chart. Not one tool stands out, but he does most things well. Paul has shown an improved eye and plate discipline in the past few seasons and has experienced a higher BA and OBP as a result. He drives balls to both gaps with solid bat speed, but his long ball power doesn’t project to anything above average. Paul has excellent speed and is a sound baserunner. He struggles against left-handed hitters and has experienced high strikeout totals. Paul can play all three outfield positions and has a strong arm with average range.

Curious enough while we thought Xavier Paul was having an outstanding season at AAA and Jason Repko was struggling, right now after Repko’s tear since Paul was called up, Repko now has a higher wOBA (.394) then Paul (.384). More on Repko’s tear in the minor league report later today.

So what does this mean for Repko?

I’m a Paul fan and was glad to see him get the shot, but I am a little perplexed as to why Repko was resigned this spring if he’s not going to be the Major League fill in. With some of the other guys in A and AA, I don’t really understand what Repko’s role is going to be. It probably won’t be a blockbuster deal, but I would really like to see the guy traded to a place where he might actually get a shot.
