Loney / Martin Home Run Contest

It is May 11th and sadly our starting catcher and 1st baseman have yet to go yard. So as a way to have fun with this predicament True Blue is launching a contest for our readers to guess which one will hit the first home run.

The above games are the valid games you may pick from. If no one wins we will then do it again with the homestand following this road trip.

Rules:

1. Pick only one player (Martin or Loney)

2. Pick the game

3. Pick the inning

4. Pick the distance

The winner will get a choice of a

Bluetopia DVD or a Dodger 2009 Media Guide or copy of Jon Weisman's 100 Things Dodgers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die

BlueTrain asked who cares and I did forget to add the history to this little event. The point is that it is very unusual and you have to go back over 44 years to find a starting Dodger combo  of 1st/catcher who have not homered by May 11th.  In 1965 Parker hit his first home run on May 8th and Roseboro finally followed suit on June 2nd. Info was provided courtesy of Bob Timmerrmann.

I like Loney here because it seems like he’s been a little closer to getting a home run than Martin. Martin has been hitting well of late, but nowhere near home run distance. He’s getting out of his slump by putting the ball in play.

by Michael White on May 11, 2009 12:45 PM PDT reply actions

Martin is walking even more now

He’s 12 for 22 with 8 walks in his last 30 PA.

He had 11 walks in 93 PA before that, so he’s more than doubled his walk rate during his hot streak.

Hard for Loney to get a homerun with hitting the amount of singles he does.

Until he brings up his doubles rate, I can’t see him hitting a home run before Martin.

by Tripon on May 11, 2009 1:07 PM PDT reply actions

Everyone hits a home run eventually given enough at bats unless you are 1% of the positional population.

OT: I was looking at Sandy's 1965 gamelogs

He pitched THREE complete during the last week of September (not including the perfecto on 9/9), all in the span of 7 days. Two were shutouts and the other was a one run game. Ridiculous.

by silverwidow on May 11, 2009 2:45 PM PDT reply actions

His 1965 World Series performance was also kind of ridiculous against a very good offensive Twin team.

Somebody over at Bucs dugout arguing that Andy LaRoche should get playing time while Dewlyn Young shouldn’t. For anyone interested in the former Dodgers farmhands.

I would imagine entries have to be in before the start of the first game of the trip, or maybe before the first PA by either.

I guessed the first game so I would know my fate in the first day!
