I agree with you here...
although it does seem like Ethier is the one who benefited the most when Manny arrived, and is now being affected the most with Manny gone.
I wouldn't have been surprised
If Ethier had come out and Paul had stayed in.

Yes!
I think that was a ball, but who cares!!

agreed
but i don’t think Wade is completely recovered from injury

From DT comments
Mota is the only relief pitcher for both teams listed as unavailable for tonights game.

There we go.
It looks like Loretta struggles throwing it across the diamond. Anyone else notice that?

Could be good if we canget him out of the way.
But I’d rather not face him at all.

I'd certainly advocate pitching VERY carefully

who is this padma you guys speak of??
Dodgers - 2008 NL West Champions
Cardinals - 2008 NFC Champions
At least Tron got the heart of their lineup out of the way.
Not that we’ll ever get back to their half of the inning anyway.
Ok
We can hit this guy, ERA be damned.

Ohh
That first pitch to Kemp was so fat.

Hey guys
what did I miss? I got a text from Phil asking if Pagan was safe earlier, but I didn’t see it.
Was he safe?
It was on a little dribbler by Sheffield.
Pagan scored from second because the defense was positioned poorly.
by Brendan Scolari on May 18, 2009 10:26 PM PDT up reply actions
how in the world
did russ martin ever hit 19 in one season, he’ll be lucky to get to double digits this season
At least the Dodgers were kind enough to wait for me
as I watched the finale of 24 (following along with the game via iPhone).
I've never been too impressed with 24.
It certainly doesn’t touch Lost.

Someone needs to look at more slash stats!

At Dodger Thoughts night
a few weeks back, she spoke to the group, and mentioned the first thing she looked for in a pitcher is strike one, and rattled off stats that the OBP and SLG were X lower after 0-1 than 1-0.
by Eric Stephen on May 18, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh
Obscure reference. It’s common knowledge though.
by Brendan Scolari on May 18, 2009 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions
It was the way she brought it up
Like it was a mantra, and she mentioned the stat so casually it was refreshing.
by Eric Stephen on May 18, 2009 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions
need a win tonight!
otherwise series becomes much harder to win (stating the obvious is a skill of mine)
The true Paul O'Neill comparison
would be if Ethier yelled and looked surly and threw a helmet after he got double-switched out of the game.
also if his cap fell off
every time he caught a fly ball or line drive
by BillyAshley on May 18, 2009 10:28 PM PDT up reply actions
If more people
would have just followed him to freedom, he would be calmer.
by Eric Stephen on May 18, 2009 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Phew
We’ve gotten lucky so far this inning.
by Brendan Scolari on May 18, 2009 10:30 PM PDT reply actions
Tron is leaving everything up this inning.
He must be tired.

what just happened?
run scored or not?
Dodgers - 2008 NL West Champions
Cardinals - 2008 NFC Champions
Dodgers appealed
Church missed 3rd base…3rd out…no run
by Eric Stephen on May 18, 2009 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions
no run scored
Missed bag = out after appeal at 3rd.

Right center
Church very easily could have scored.
by Brendan Scolari on May 18, 2009 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions
They showed it on the Mets broadcast.
If he touched it he only skimmed the bag, but I don’t think he did.
by Brendan Scolari on May 18, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions
Prime Ticket
had a replay of sorts but the Zapruder film was more conclusive.
by Eric Stephen on May 18, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions
And Church definitely missed third.
Mets announcers show how he looked back at third right after he touched home, which he would never do otherwise.
by Brendan Scolari on May 18, 2009 10:39 PM PDT reply actions
i have seen that happen
one other time in my life, where the go-ahead run misses a base (not in a tagging too early)
I did it this year for my school team
I wasn’t the go-ahead run, but still embarassing.
by Brendan Scolari on May 18, 2009 10:41 PM PDT up reply actions
Here's how Gameday describes it:
Ryan Church out at 3rd on the throw, center fielder Matt Kemp to shortstop Rafael Furcal to third baseman Mark Loretta.
I like "what he created"
perfect…he created a fly ball out :)

walk pierre to get to furcal

too risky for double play

O-Dog hit a grounder to first and the guy threw it away on the throw home.
by silverwidow on May 18, 2009 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions
Grounder to 1B
possible double play…Tatis threw home and it missed the catcher by about 3 feet.
by Eric Stephen on May 18, 2009 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions
Actually Tatis was out in a double-switch. It was Reed.

As a Mets fan
I hate your time zone. I stayed up until 2 in the morning to watch that? Congratulations on the win, at least you’re taking it in stride, but for everything that happened tonight, I better either win the lottery or wake up with a footlong erection tomorrow.
The Padma pictures we posted might help with that last part
But YMMV.
by David Young on May 18, 2009 11:02 PM PDT up reply actions
seriously
I’m a little league umpire, and I’ve seen 8 year old kids make every one of the plays that the Mets didn’t tonight. At least this wasn’t to the Phillies or the Dodgers. Hell, I thank your franchise for leaving NY, otherwise the Mets wouldn’t exist. So this was payback?
by DevonEdwards on May 18, 2009 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions
FWIW, it's nowhere near as bad as Kent and Drew out at home on the same stupid play!
by David Young on May 18, 2009 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions
okay, okay,
but we had the game won, and then all of a sudden we didn’t. We had you guys held in check, and then we didn’t. And then, all of a sudden, we lost.

According to Steiner, Loretta. Torre also pointed at the bag to make sure Mark got the point.
by MaxDSterling on May 18, 2009 11:10 PM PDT up reply actions
From Jon Weisman at Dodger Thoughts
“I don’t have anything else to do but look at third base, and he obviously missed it,” Loretta said on Prime Ticket.
by David Young on May 18, 2009 11:25 PM PDT up reply actions
well, maybe his back foot grazed the...no, he didn't
but as a little league ump, I’m hard pressed to make that call, in that spot.
by DevonEdwards on May 18, 2009 11:13 PM PDT up reply actions
I believe the logic is
since Church technically only advanced to 2nd base (never made it to 3rd), they can’t give Pagan more than a single.
by Eric Stephen on May 18, 2009 11:30 PM PDT up reply actions
I guess
Consider: Less than two out, Jeff Kent at first, Juan Pierre batting. Pierre lashes a line drive that rolls to the 434 foot sign in Land Shark Park as all three OFs collide. Rich Donnelly windmills both runners home, with Pierre nearly clipping heels with Kent as they approach home and the ball arrives. The catcher tags Kent coming in standing but Pierre then slides past him and scores. I guess technically that’s a triple for Juan, scoring on the throw home to get Kent!
OK, that’s not exactly the right comparison, but I’m not deleting it now.

CHAD BILLINGSLEY, rhp, Dodgers
“There are times when his command is a little off, but his arm strength, demeanor on the mound, presence—everything is good. He has a chance to be a dominant starter in the big leagues”
—Birmingham manager Razor Shines
This guy is now the Mets’ 3rd base coach. Smart fella.
One of the best names ever
I probably still have some baseball cards of him on the Expos.
