3 Prospect Stars Of The Day 5/23/09

Three Stars of the Day 5/23/09

1. Alberto Bastardo - LHP - Inland Empire 66ers (A+)

The southpaw from Venezuela pitched six shutout innings but was robbed of his third straight win when 66ers closer Justin Orenduff blew his third save of the season. Bastardo struck out seven batters, walked just one, and surrendered four hits. It was the third straight start in which Bastardo has given up a run or less. Bastardo lowered his ERA to 3.72. He has struck out 46 batters in 48.1 innings while walking 14.

2. Preston Mattingly - LF - Inland Empire 66ers (A+)

In his second game back from a stint on the diasbled list, Mattingly batting lead-off for the 66ers had a four hit night in the 66ers extra inning win over the Bakersfield Blaze. Mattingly hit his fourth Home Run of the season, a solo shot in the 8th inning to go along with his three singles, on of which drove in Elian Herrera in the top of the 10th inning to give the 66ers a short lived lead.

3. Kyle Russell - RF - Great Lakes Loons (A-)

Russell homered and doubled in the Loons' losing effort against the Clinton LumberKings. The Loons lost 12-6 as first-rounder Ethan Martin got roughed up fro the first time this year. Russell was 2-4, his 11th Home Run, a solo one. Russell's 11 Home Runs lead the Midwest League. Russell's RBI brought his tally to 36, a number which also leads the league.

Also Jason Schmidt went 2.2 innings in a rehab start in Albequrque. He gave up a two-run Home Run and didn't strike anybody out or walk anyone.

Didn’t read that. That is interesting and possibly explains why he had such a short stint. Hope he is alright.

Schmidt

I checked the Albuquerque papers and found this.

The former National League All-Star, trying to overcome two injury-curtailed seasons, had his night end suddenly when a line drive off the bat of Salt Lake’s Freddy Sandoval struck Schmidt on the right side of the head in the third inning.

Schmidt was struck on the right side of his face. Albuquerque’s Dwayne Pollok came on in relief and earned the win in an 11-8 Isotopes’ victory. Schmidt went to the ground for a few minutes before getting up and walking off the field with a small cut and a noticeable bruise near his cheek.

Also

“He’s doing tremendously well,” Wallach said of Schmidt. “They don’t think it’s a concussion, nothing’s broken. He looks good and seems like he’ll be fine.”

Initially the reports sound good. Hopefully he is alright.

Definitley

I hope he makes it just so I can buy his jersey!

I hope MLB doesn’t ban his jersey sales like the NFL did for Randall Gay. :)
