Giants at Dodgers, Episode V: The Umpire Strikes Back

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers, May 9, 2009 12:40 PM PDT

You never want to concede a game to the opposition, but with tomorrow's matchup -- Tim Lincecum vs. Jeff Weaver -- heavily favoring the Giants, today's game seems quite important for the Dodgers to win.  Then again, Chad Billingsley vs. Barry Zito was tilted heavily in the Dodgers' direction, and the Giants went on to win 3-1.

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com tells us that some regulars will rest in today's day game following a night game, with the leading candidates being Rafael Furcal, Casey Blake, and perhaps Russell Martin.  However, with Monday's off day providing a natural day off, Martin's 11 hits in his last 20 at bats might be too important to sit.  Entering last Saturday's game, Martin was hitting .198, and I jokingly told a friend he would be at .280 by the end of the homestand.  Well, he's up to .267 now, so that doesn't look so far fetched.

Dylan Hernandez notes the absence of Manny Ramirez is already being felt by the club.  I can't help but think constant questions about Manny's suspension could really grate on the players.  Casey Blake noted, "Obviously, I'd rather not answer these questions, but it's there. It's real."

What's also real is that the Dodgers play today on big Fox, at 12:40.  Eric Stults faces off against Jonathan Sanchez.

Eric - I hope Joe lets the Cajun start today.

Let’s see if Xavier can do well against southpaws. If he is as good as I think he is – what a delight that would be till the banished one returns.

If I had to make an over/under

On number of Juan Pierre starts during Manny’s suspension, I would put the number at 47.5.

And I’d take the over.

by Eric Stephen on May 9, 2009 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

As hard as it is to believe

Juan Pierre will have a better shot against Sanchez than Xavier Paul who according to those who have seen him say he can’t hit lefties.

by bhsportsguy on May 9, 2009 10:08 AM PDT reply actions

What the hell is the point of XPaul coming up then?

I’d rather have a mid-level prospect like him playing in AAA and a low level guy in Hoffmann on the ML bench.

by silverwidow on May 9, 2009 10:13 AM PDT reply actions

I think they wanted to give Paul a taste of the big leagues. He’ll play occasionally, and I’m not as concerned with having him play every day in AAA since he’s older.

by Eric Stephen on May 9, 2009 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree

he’s not an elite prospect and he’s not that young. But still, it kind of bothers me that he will be given ZERO chance to compete for the starting job. And the justification is Pierre’s salary, not ability, because Paul has a strong arm that would help immensely on defense plus a smidgen of pop.

by silverwidow on May 9, 2009 10:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Wasn't Xavier voted best arm in the organization 4 YRS IN A ROW.

…just sayin’ I better not see Juan out in left field in any 9th inning WITH THIS KID’S MONDESI-TYPE GUN. : )

by Craig88USC on May 9, 2009 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Paul would.

But there’s a reason he’s not making 10M, because he’s a rookie. I’m just saying I’m sure Torre thinks that Pierre is a proven veteran who’s better than Paul, I’m not saying I agree with him.

by Brendan Scolari on May 9, 2009 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, Pierre is a proven veteran

but if Torre thinks that makes him better than Paul, he’s an idiot.

by silverwidow on May 9, 2009 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I think a lot of managers think that way.

They have a general distrust of rookies. In a way, things are like this in lots of businesses. A boss will trust his longtime employee over someone who was just hired, even if the new hire might be better.

I think

Torre just wanted to spread out the off days. There will probably be a couple of guys who get off days tomorrow too (Russ and O-Dog/Blake maybe).

by Brendan Scolari on May 9, 2009 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not unreasonable

to think Pierre is better than Paul right now. I would like Paul to see some time too, but it is unreasonable to say Torre is an idiot for playing Pierre over Paul.

by Eric Stephen on May 9, 2009 12:28 PM PDT reply actions

I can understand

him playing Pierre over Paul. One guy makes 10 million bucks and the other has one AB in the big leagues. Fine.

But Paul’s skill set deserves an opportunity, at least, to compete over someone so one dimensional.

This year’s Loney?

by prosellis on May 9, 2009 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

This year's loney with power.

It happens, and can you really blame Ethier on that last DP? His bat broke on ball, its not like he could have lifted the ball up on a broken bat.

by Tripon on May 9, 2009 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions

To clarify

I can deal with a player that has a lot of DPs as long as they are also producing.

by prosellis on May 9, 2009 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

DPs are opptunity based.

Sure, we could have had more, Ethier could have also striked out for each DP he has. He could have a hit, sac fly, etc.

High DP are a function of men on base.

Casey's decent.

Loney hasn’t been good this year.

by Brendan Scolari on May 9, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

They both have great differentials between AVG/OB. Loney’s OB is still way above average.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on May 9, 2009 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Loney's also a 1st baseman.

I know you don’t like win values but Loney’s been worth 0.2 WAR while Casey’s been worth 0.6 WAR. If they keep this up, Casey will be an above average player while Loney would be way below average.

by Brendan Scolari on May 9, 2009 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t think there is any chance that Loney will continue to have this kind of power outage. He’ll be better then Blake this year when all is said and done.

48 games to be exact.

The best thing that could happen to the Dodgers is for Pierre to get hot and flash some 2004 skills, thus making him marketable when Manny comes back and help take the heat off the team during his absence. If Marlon Anderson can go nuts for a month it is possible.

But now that Kemp can play center, no one else is close

Man I hope they keep Kemp in the four hole.

That is not how you do a rundown.

Regarding the Uribe catch on comments on Fox

I think Kershaw moved out of he way because he wanted to protect his head, not because he was giving Uribe room

Fantasy baseball

Anyone in here participate in fantasy baseball? If so, who are the Dodgers on your team?

by Jesse S. on May 9, 2009 2:23 PM PDT reply actions

I’ve got a Dodger root team in a scoresheet league.
http://www.scoresheet.com/FOR_WWW/NL_Home_Town.htm
I’m loaded with Dodgers
Loney, Furcal, Martin, Kemp, Billingsley, Kershaw, Troncoso, Wolf, McDonald
and ten minor leaguers.

In my roto league I only have Kershaw

We also have a True Blue league and a Dodger Thought league of which I have teams but can’t remember at the moment who I have. Those are free leagues and don’t pay as close attention to them.

Keeping the young players and not giving up much.

Lol.

by Brendan Scolari on May 9, 2009 2:41 PM PDT reply actions

We all make mistakes but he did keep the right guys. Billingsley, Kemp, Broxton, Ethier, Martin and I’m sure he’s been offered players for him everyday for the last three years.

We all are bummed he didn’t get more for E Jackson/Navarro/Santana but he sure traded Joel Guzman/Tiffany at the right time.

Joel Guzman became Lugo which became multiple draft picks which is more valuable then Guzman is.

That draft pick with WIthrow by the way.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on May 9, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

No, I’ve defended Ned many times at DT and even here when it is one sided. Eric usually handles the defense so I don’t need to jump in. People think because I was so pissed off at the Santana trade and that I’ve done the satire stuff with him that I’m anti – Ned but I’m not.

I’m neutral, I think he’s made some moves that didn’t work out that I would have done, some moves I would never consider, and some moves that have worked out. Maybe he’s learning because he had a hell of winter and not one that I would have done. You know I wasn’t in favor of Wolf or Hudson and they have been huge reasons for this teams success.

He’s made two deals that set me off at the time. The Proctor/Betemit deal because it left us without a 3rd baseman or valuable pinch hitter and Proctor sucked. And the Santana deal. Those were my howls of protest. Most of the other stuff I could see both sides to even if I disagreed with his move.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on May 9, 2009 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry I was joking.

Though I didn’t know you were neutral on Ned. I’m still pretty anti-Ned but this offseason turned out better than I could have hoped, and I think he may be learning on the job as well. His interviews lately have encouraged me quite a bit.

by Brendan Scolari on May 9, 2009 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Speaking of Santana

they finally updated his minor league photo (no more Dodger cap).

by silverwidow on May 9, 2009 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions

On the bright side

our 2008 draft has totally STOCKED the system again: Martin, Lindblom, Gordon, Delmonico, Russell to name a few.

by silverwidow on May 9, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed.

This last draft looks REALLY good. Hopefully the ’09 draft will be just as fruitful.

by Brendan Scolari on May 9, 2009 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Hard to be fruitiful with no first rounder.

Imagine the 08 class without Ethan Martin. He’s the one that makes the 08 class that much better.

by Tripon on May 9, 2009 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions

True

But maybe we will get an extra first rounder in ’10 if Hudson signs elsewhere.

by Brendan Scolari on May 9, 2009 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions

and hard to argue that Hudson was not worth that draft pick at this point.
