3 Prospect Stars Of The Day 6/12/09

Three Stars of the Day 6/12/09

1. Devaris Gordon - SS - Great Lakes Loons (A-)

The Midwest League all star had his seventh multi-hit game of the season. Gordon's three hits included his seventh and eighth triples of the year. Gordon scored a run and also walked. Gordon has a modest three game hitting streak and he has a current slash line of .287/.352/.385

2. Chris Withrow - RHP - Inland Empire 66ers (AA)

Withrow earned his fifth win of the season, pitching five innings and giving up just a single earned run. Withrow now pitched in five consecutive games in which he has given up just one earned run. Withrow stuck out five batters in his most recent start but he walked four. Withrow limited Lake Elsinore to just two hits in his five innings of work. Withrow's record stands at 5-4 on the year.

3. Cole St. Clair - LHP - Great Lakes Loons (A-)

St. Clair earned his second save of the year, pitching two innings scoreless relief to secure the win for the Loons and Bobby Blevins who pitches seven solid innings to earn a win. St. Clair struck out four batters and walked none. After giving up two runs in his first appearance of the season, St. Clair has yet to surrender a run in his next four appearances.

Seems like it

Like most Rice pitchers he’s had some arm surgery. The Dodgers could be just taking it easy with him, but my feeling is he is being groomed to be used in a relief role.

Welcome to the world of big-time college baseball.

Yeah, but Rice seems to do it on a sysmantic level.

I know Tony Gwynn trying to protect Strasburg’s arm at San Diego St. was the exception and not the rule, but Rice’s M.O. seems to be to burn through as many arms as possible.

I guess what I’m saying is that you’d think the reputation would scare off more pitchers.

Rice

Yea, Rice has a infamous reputation for pitchers and arm injuries. When they won the CWS they had an awesome rotation consisting of Jeff Niemann, Wade Townsend, and Phillip Humber. All three guys have suffered arm injuries since!

All College coaches are guilty of these see Augie Garrido with Austin Wood or George Horton with Jason Windsor a few years back. Its irresponsible but these guys are paid to win titles. It sucks to say it but the reality is the future careers of these pitchers is not the highest priority.

today north carolina pitcher alex white (dodgers draftee but didnt sign few years back) went 9 inning and threw 131 pitches giving up 8 hits and 1 earned run. these college coaches dont care. they just want to win

It’s hard to blame them. When you get to Omaha at this point its basically a win at all costs mentality. Especially for UNC who has come so close, especially in 2006 and 2007.

I don’t think 131 pitches is that bad. What could be bad is what Fox will do with White in his next start.

Charlie Haeger

lost 1 – 0, giving up only 4 hits and one run. Claudio Vargas pitched one shutout inning. Wonder what his time frame is?

Adkins

also pitched his best game of the year with six shutout innings.
