Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Dodgers @ Rangers, Game 3

Los Angeles Dodgers at Texas Rangers, Jun 14, 2009 12:05 PM PDT

Chad Billingsley is one of three starters going for their National League-leading ninth victory today, along with Johan Santana and Matt Cain.  Billingsley has been outstanding this season, and even more so on the road, posting a 1.82 ERA and a 1.125 WHIP away from Dodger Stadium.  Of his five road starts, the only one the Dodgers lost was in Chicago, where Billingsley gave up only two runs in seven innings.

The Rangers will send to the mound 22-year old Derek Holland, rated their second-best prospect by Baseball America before the season.  The publication noted "Holland has a chance to be a frontline starter along the lines of Scott Kazmir," but so far he has a 7.04 ERA in three starts.  His x-FIP is only 4.42, but its too early to take any meaningful analysis from such things.

In June, the struggling Dodger offense has been led by Andre Ethier (.341/.386/.780) and Matt Kemp (.324/.359/.514).  The only other Dodger with an OPS above .700 this month is Rafael Furcal, hitting .257/.333/.429.

All the regulars are in the lineup today, with Russell Martin moving to DH.  Matt Kemp moves up from ninth to sixth in the order:

Rangers      Dodgers
2B Kinsler LF Pierre
3B Young SS Furcal
1B Blalock 2B Hudson
DH Andruw 3B Blake
RF Cruz RF Ethier
LF Murphy CF Kemp
CF Byrd 1B Loney
C Saltalamacchia DH Martin
SS Andrus C Ausmus

I liked this article on Rangers’ pitching coach Mike Maddux in today’s Dallas Morning News.

Seems unusual but maybe not

Both No. 9 hitters with “us” at the end of their last names.

There is an “us” in team :)

Chad looking a lot better for the All Star start

Santana got tagged for 9! runs in 3 innings today and his ERA jumped to 3.29

by bucknellbruin on Jun 14, 2009 11:54 AM PDT reply actions

Lincecum and Haren

are both better bets start than Chad.

by silverwidow on Jun 14, 2009 11:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Cain before Lincecum

Lincecum has the name recognition and more K’s but Cain has a better ERA and more wins.

I think Haren should get the start but he could be hurt by his record

by bucknellbruin on Jun 14, 2009 11:59 AM PDT up reply actions

johnny cueto also has a 2.33 era with a 6-3 record

Chad should weigh himself before & after this sweatfest

- probably drop about 7 pounds - if (I mean hopefully when) he goes 6 to 7 innings at Arlington’s sauna-like stadium

The Rangers are wearing the much more acceptable home whites today.

They apparently can’t decide which color to use: blue tops Friday, red tops Saturday, white today.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 14, 2009 12:09 PM PDT reply actions

That’s a good start…a walk, and the push bunt single (nobody covered first).

by Eric Stephen on Jun 14, 2009 12:09 PM PDT reply actions

Is Blalock would have let Kinsler field that, Furcal still would have been safe.

Another shitty throw this year by Furcal.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 14, 2009 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Why can’t the official scorer make the judgment call that none of the runs should be earned? I never understood why you can’t assume the double play.

by spike238e on Jun 14, 2009 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions

You can't assume the double play

because some runners are faster than others

by silverwidow on Jun 14, 2009 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s a fine rule in general, but when the error and/or misplay occurs specifically on the final out, there should be discretion allowed the official scorer.

For instance, if there was nobody on base and that grounder was hit to Furcal, it’s an error if he makes that throw.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 14, 2009 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Great slide by Andruw Jones to force the issue, if Jones doesn’t go in hard Furcal throws out Cruz.

by RolexEmbezzled on Jun 14, 2009 12:25 PM PDT reply actions

both of those runs should be unearned because a better throw would have ended the inning

by matthewmafa on Jun 14, 2009 12:25 PM PDT reply actions

I agree

that’s one case where “you can’t assume the double play” is faulty. The first out was already recorded, the inning would have ended on that throw…there’s no reason it shouldn’t be an unearned run.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 14, 2009 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions

cannot assume a double play.

basically no matter what happens, you’ll always count the run.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 14, 2009 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice catch by the Caribbean Cruz

by RolexEmbezzled on Jun 14, 2009 12:28 PM PDT reply actions

So apparently the Ranger OF defense consists of guys making horrible jumps on balls, then making lucky catches.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 14, 2009 12:28 PM PDT reply actions

Martin is horrible, should’ve traded him when he had value.

by RolexEmbezzled on Jun 14, 2009 12:31 PM PDT reply actions

Should we trade Kemp, or Ethier, or Billingsley now too? They have value.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 14, 2009 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, because they don’t award those things to players currently not in Triple A, let alone the majors :)

by Eric Stephen on Jun 14, 2009 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Not to beat a dead horse

But players with his type of discipline and power are good bets to be major leaguers. Especially now that’s he proving it in the upper minors.

by silverwidow on Jun 14, 2009 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t want to go down this road again either, but isn’t the fact that he’s 23 in Doube A any kind of red flag?

by Eric Stephen on Jun 14, 2009 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

james loney should be sent to the minors because it is sad for a first basemen to hit so many lazy fly balls and weak ground outs

Regarding Santana

you all know that catchers take time to develop, especially ones who were converted at the age of 21. Santana’s bat is ready but Cleveland doesn’t really have a place for him. Come Sept he will a 23 year playing in the major leagues and the red flag will have been replaced with a white one.

Steve Lyons maintains the Earth is flat

by Eric Stephen on Jun 14, 2009 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, Lyons main arguement is that if you were watching Andrus you'd have no need for defensive metrics.

Lyons, you work for the Dodgers, this is the first time you seen him play shortstop this year. 3 games does not show you how good a defensive player you are.

by Tripon on Jun 14, 2009 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

What did I miss? Lyons say that Andrus is a bad SS because of his high error total?

Humm... I wonder...

Does his eyes tell him the Tejeda, Jeter and Micheal Young are bad defensive SS?

If they do they are better than most announers in the game right now…

There’s also the 45 days on roster qualification, which muddles things up a bit. Troncoso had 119 days of service time last year

by Eric Stephen on Jun 14, 2009 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think he qualifies

From MLB.com:

A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).
