He’s been fine, albeit mostly in low leverage situations, for a month

Yes

He has been a lot better. Still, I’d rather he not pitch.

as long as this game doesn't go 17 innings or more

The Dodgers should win. I can’t see the A’s scoring for another 8 innings or so.

Bay

is awesome as long as you don’t have to drive any where. I went to school up there and as long as you can find the small pockets of hot girls, it’s not a bad place to live for a couple of years.
Really amazing the hate they feel for anything SoCal. I guess more sad than amazing.
vr, Xei

I don't think there's really much hate for SoCal

Outside of sports. Lots of people love to go there. Not sure what you are referring to about driving.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 10:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Driving: Bad traffic
SoCal: always got crap about SoCal stealing their H20.

vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Jun 16, 2009 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Really?

When I went to LA a month or so ago I thought driving was hell. The roads are much more confusing, the freeway has much more traffic, and the drivers were more aggressive. I think LA is worse to drive in, and it’s not even remotely close.

Maybe the SoCal hate is just because you were from there. I’ve never heard anyone make much of a deal about it at all.

Anyway, I’m not trying to put down LA, I really like it there, I just think both places are extremely nice.

I’d be surprised if he gets less than $5 million next year.

Agreed.

And hopefully it’s part of a long term deal.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions

you think Brox will get this much? seems a little high but if he continues like he’s been going then i’m sure that amount will be justified

by Alex Serena on Jun 16, 2009 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Probably

I think Papelbon got around that much. He has been the best reliever in baseball this year.

Gigantic douchebag though.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

To clarify, I meant that Broxton had been the best reliever in baseball thus far.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 11:34 PM PDT up reply actions

He got $1.825 as mostly a setup man. He moves into different comps as a closer, and being elite will handsomely reward him.

I just want to point out

that I brought up the Kershaw 13 K game as a mirror of tonight.

Similarites:
1) lead entering top 8th
2) 3-run HR in the 8th
3) 4-2 Dodger deficit middle 8th (cue Journey)
4) 4-4 after 8
5) walkoff event…5-4 win

Xei, did you see my question above about run probability?

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I was going by win expectancy calculator. They should match up a little better than that.
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Jun 16, 2009 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes

Win expectancy would go from 79.5% to 79.6% with a successful sac bunt from Loney according to the win expectancy calculator.
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Jun 16, 2009 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ll trust you…since you use specific information rather than league-wide generalities.

I no longer trust you :)

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm

So is there no situation where you should bunt if an average hitter is up then? Because that seems about as good a situation as you could possibly ave.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Bunting

I don’t think sacrificing is ever a good idea. Only with the pitcher. Not a fan of giving away outs.

I especially hate it when you ask James Loney to bunt.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn’t mind the bunt, except for your final point, that Loney is not particularly adept at bunting.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Even

if Furcal or Pierre, two guys who can buntt were up I still don’t like the bunt in that situation.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry

Stupid first response. It seems like it would be smart to bunt there, it just feels right. But maybe that’s one of those things where your inner bias gets the best of you.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 11:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought the same thing too. I wondered if it had something to do with the submarine pitcher.
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Jun 16, 2009 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I think your tie-breaker becomes which hitters are coming up, how well can the person bunt, how fast are they (to stay out of a double play). Kemp was on deck and may have gotten an IBB, which would raise the WE a little bit. Loney is pretty slow, easy to bunt into a DP, and we found out that he doesn’t appear to be a great bunter.
I am against bunting in that situation, but it’s not an impeachable offense by any means.
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Jun 16, 2009 11:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't forget though

Loney also grounds into a lot of double plays normally, and he’s not likely to get an XBH (and Bow wouldn’t likely send Hudson with 0 outs).

I think it’s about an even situation overall but I see your point.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 11:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Variables

Tons of variables. Like every infielder being out of position. Ground ball could also go through for a hit with the corners drawn in and the shortstop hugging the middle.
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Jun 16, 2009 11:47 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s fair. I’m not a fan of the bunt in that situation but like you said it’s not an AWFUL play in certain situations.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:21 PM PDT up reply actions

GM

Maybe he’ll just go back to being GM.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Al Jefferson, and I forget

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 11:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Al Jefferson

Al Jefferson was the centerpiece. They also got Sebastian Telfair and Gerald Green.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:02 PM PDT up reply actions

What happened to Green?

Has he done anything? Telfair has had a bunch of injuries right? Sorry, not a huge basketball fan.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions

moved to Houston…then Dallas

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Here’s the whole deal:

The Boston Celtics announced today that they have acquired 10-time All-Star and 2004 MVP Kevin Garnett from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff, Sebastian Telfair, a 2009 first round draft pick (top three protected) and a return of Minnesota’s conditional first round draft pick previously obtained in the Ricky Davis-Wally Szczerbiak trade. Minnesota also receives cash considerations in the deal.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 11:12 PM PDT up reply actions

NP

Also, the Ratliff inclusion was for his expiring contract.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 11:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep

I don’t like how they do that in the NBA.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

My favorite

was I believe part of the Gasol deal…Aaron McKie was technically on the Lakers inactive roster, but had “retired” and was coaching (in Philly?)…to make the Gasol deal work under the cap, they needed McKie in the deal.

So McKie gave up his coaching job to sign a guaranteed $750k contract to be in the deal, then get released.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 11:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

That sort of thing is ridiculous. Although at least it helped the Lakers. ;-)

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions

McKie was an unpaid coach.

So he basically gave up his free coaching gig for free money.

by Tripon on Jun 16, 2009 11:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Basketball

Transactions in basketball have become more odd with the new CBA. I hate that expiring deals are so valuable nowadays. But it’s just a nature of the beast I guess.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:23 PM PDT up reply actions

It is very weird and wrong in many ways that crap players with unique contracts are more coveted than good players.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 11:24 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

It doesn't need to be.

That sort of thing doesn’t happen in the NFL, and they have a salary cap.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 11:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Hard Cap Vs. Soft Cap

NFL has a hard cap and the NBA has a soft cap. Not exactly the same thing.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions

True

But I have to believe there is some way to eliminate the process of trading away good players to get bad contracts.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions

plus the whole guaranteed contracts thing

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow

the margins really get jacked with all the replies, huh? :)

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 11:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

Jefferson is one of the better offensive big men in the league. And he can rebound. People kill McHale for not getting the best value out of Garnett. I think Jefferson was a good move but not getting picks was retarded. By then Telfair had very little upside and Gerald Green wasn’t really an uber prospect. He fell really far in a draft that was not very weak.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Picks

Ah I forgot that he got a first rounder but he could have gotten Jefferson and at least one more first rounder.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Plus

the pick is for this draft. He should have held out for one sooner. He had to assume Boston would be pretty damn good for the next two years or so.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

they gave up #5 in the Allen deal though, right?

by Eric Stephen on Jun 16, 2009 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea

That was before the KG deal. With that not being on the table, no way I do that deal.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Overhyped

Telfair was just an overhyped prospect. The Sonny Vacarro hype machine did its job well with this guy. He was always a lightning quick PG who couldn’t shoot and couldn’t run an offense. But he had a ton of hype behind him (Marbury’s cousin+ADIDAS PR department+NY PG) so he was made out to be a lot better than he really was. He was a player that really would have either benefited from college or would have been weeded out.

Green is a super athlete with no basketball IQ. He got a lot of press because he threw down a couple amazing dunks in the summer league. This was back when people though summer league was a decent indicator of a player’s rookie season. Unfortunately he had no real skills and his athleticism isn’t at the uber level.

by ASUcruz on Jun 16, 2009 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks a ton.

The trade was terrible then.

I remember the year Green got drafted Kupchak (or some Laker official) said something to the effect of “There’s a high school guy that we absolutely cannot pass up”. I though they were talking about Green, but when they picked Bynum I was pretty surprised.

by Brendan Scolari on Jun 16, 2009 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea

That year a lot of people were pissed/puzzled as to why the Lakers didn’t draft Danny Granger that year. He’s turned out to be a fine player. I’m think most people are happy with Bynum though!

The Dodgers have signed Korean high school infielder Tae-hyeok Nam to a minor league contract. The 18-year-old, who the Dodgers say has good power and above-average speed, batted .314 with 22 homers and 43 RBIs in 65 games for his high school in Seoul. Nam is the third Korean to sign a minor league deal with the Dodgers this year, joining right-handers Hyang-nam Choi, 38, who is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in nine relief appearances at triple A, and Ji-Mo Lee, 22, who will report to Class-A Inland Empire later this month. . . .
