3 Prospect Stars Of The Day 6/18/09

Three Stars of the Day 6/18/09

1. Jon Michael Redding - RHP - Great Lakes Loons (A-)

Redding earned his ninth win of the season by throwing eight strong innings against Lansing. Redding struck out nine batters while walking just one. One unearned run crossed the plate on Redding's watch. Redding gave up four hits, all singles. Redding is unbeaten in his last five starts, his last loss coming on May 22nd. Overall Redding is 9-2 on the season. Redding's nine wins ranks second in the Midwest League and leads the Loons. In his last three starts Redding has given up just three earned runs. With his latest effort, Redding lowered his ERA to 4.46 on the year. Redding induced four double plays that helped him get out of jams. Alfredo Silverio hit his third Home Run and was 3-4 overall in support of Redding. The Loons won 6-1.

2. Josh Bell - 3B - Chattanooga Lookouts (AA)

Bell's three hit night helped the Lookouts beat the Mississippi Braves 6-2. Bell extended his modest five game hitting streak by smacking two doubles and stroking a single. Bell had an RBI giving him 36 for the season and scored a run. He also stole a base giving him two stolen bases for the year. Bell has 16 doubles on the year. Eduardo Perez also contributed, hitting his third Home Run in Double-A and driving in two runs.

3. Tim Sexton - RHP - Inland Empire 66ers (A+)

After dropping six straight decisions Tim Sexton finally earned his second win of the year. Sexton gave up three earned runs over seven innings. After giving up two runs in the first inning and a run in the second inning, Sexton settled down and shutout the High Desert Mavericks over the next five innings. Sexton gave up eleven hits but he struck out five batters and didn't walk one. True to form, Sexton induced twelve groundouts against just three flyouts. The 66ers won 7-4.

Baseball America's Hot Sheet

Two Dodger prospects got shout outs in BA’s weekly hot sheet.

Why He’s Here: .480/.552/.680 (12-for-25), 2B, 2 3B, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 2 K, 4 SB, 1 CS

The Scoop: The Dodgers have several shortstop prospects with Chin-Hung Lu and the injured Ivan DeJesus Jr. joining Gordon on the depth chart. But while Gordon has a higher ceiling than either of the other two thanks to his game-changing speed and his ability to get on base enough to be a top of the order hitter. Gordon is also a potential plus defender, but what’s stood out the most in the Midwest League is his speed—his 36 steals and eight triples lead the circuit and he’s second in the league in runs scored.

Why He’s Here: 1-0, 0.00, 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 Er, 1 BB, 13 SO

The Scoop: McDonald was sent back to Triple-A in mid-May after going 1-1, 6.75 in 10 appearances (four starts) for the Dodgers, and he’s been making the most of the assignment so far. McDonald has turned in back-to-back double-digit strikeout games, the last coming in spectacular fashion Sunday in Round Rock, when he fanned 13 over seven shutout innings. McDonald has racked up 40 strikeouts while having allowed only 21 hits in 30 1/3 innings for the Isotopes. Big league lefty hitters didn’t have much trouble figuring out McDonald, who relies on his offspeed pitches due to a fringy fastball, hitting .294 against him in 34 at-bats. The same can’t be said for their Triple-A counterparts, whom McDonald has held to a .158 average in 38 at-bats.

I have a feeling

that Gordon is going to be a good one.
